Antebellum American history is an absolutely insane time period with so many fascinating characters, and this video does a great job at providing a cross -section of it. Hats off to you, Mr. Munger.

  6. My Mom actually bought a box of Amway soap. I think a friend of Her's got into it and she wanted to help her out. She did a couple of loads of laundry with it. The clothes had a weird scent and my sister, and I itched like crazy and we got rashes. It took about two or three washes to get Amway soap out of the clothes and a bunch of clothes got thrown out. I remember in the 70s and early 80s it was not uncommon to see garages or basements stacked with Amway products. I think they were a pain-in-the-ass to throw out.

  11. I taught American History to gifted (academically advanced) 5th graders for 9 years and NONE of the history book teacher’s editions had this kind of detail in them. As a result none of my students ever chose to write their presidents reports on Pierce. I wish that my dad was still alive because he instilled a love of history in my sibs and especially me. This is the sort of video that the two of us could’ve discussed at some length. Please do more videos on the lesser known presidents. Thanks!

  19. I grew up in the 70’s as an amway kid. I can’t tell you how many times I saw someone do the circles. Oh the tape we had hundreds maybe thousands of them the entertainment center was so full of them. My Dad played them over and over. If motivational tapes really worked I should have been one of the most motivated kids in the Midwest. We went to conventions several times a year but I saw how hard it was to actually make money in amway and avoided it because of what I observed during my childhood.

  20. My great grandfather liked to buy antiques and one day bought a well made old wooden rocking chair. Several years later he was at the Garfield House and the tour guide showed off a fine wooden rocking chair and said how it was one of two made for President Garfield. The other one has never been found. My great grandfather spoke up and said “I’m pretty sure I have it in my living room!” After some laughs and a reassertion, the museum sent down a curator to his house and confirmed that it was indeed the lost Garfield chair. We offered the chair to the museum after his wife passed away a few years ago but they declined to send someone down to collect it, so it now belongs to my parents.

  24. You mentioned that Zapruder was filming from atop a pergola. The pergola was right next to the grassy knoll. If someone had fired a rifle (even a suppressed rifle) 50 feet to Zapruder’s right, he absolutely would have noticed the shot. I mean the knoll is right there. The pergola is basically on it.

  29. I was in Amway in the 90's (in Ireland). If you didn't buy at least 1 tape and 1 book a week, you were considered to be a loser. When one of my friends tried to talk me out of staying in Amway, my upline gave me Dexter Yaeger's 'Don't Let Anyone Steal Your Dreams" book - this video vividly brings back memories!

This is admittedly pedantic and not particularly important but I find it interesting that Princip referred to his weapon as a "revolver" at trial but the pistol he's documented as using was a Belgian semiautomatic. Maybe "revolver" was shorthand for any sort of handgun at the time, the same way older people will refer to any sort of gaming device as a "Nintendo".

  33. Fantastic video! Though I have to push back a bit about dismissing the Dale Carnegie book "How to Win Friends and Influence People" as just a cult sales scam with the rest. That book legitimately changed my life. Its genuinely a solid instruction manual on how to approach casual human relationships so people like and trust you. Obviously this skill can be leveraged in sales like MLM scams but it can also be used to understand "how and why small talk works" and just to be a good friend for those of us who weren't born with very good social instincts.

  36. I was in a position to interact with Carlos Castaneda on two occasions at UCLA in the early seventies because I knew two young women, roommates, who had both dated him. He readily admitted his primary motivation in writing the books and getting his PhD. stemmed from deep feelings of personal insecurity based on his ethnicity and background. He said (something along the lines of) ‘I’m a short, brown Hispanic man from Peru who very much wanted to get dates with tall blonde girls, and obtaining my PhD was my goal so I could ‘score.’ The two girls I knew who introduced me to him basically supported that premise. Their friendship with him bore this out. He wrote his books in the library at UCLA and gleaned the hodgepodge of philosophical BS they contained from other philosophical and spiritual books he read. He mixed in colorful stories from his own trips in and around Latin America and the American southwest. And he exploited the interests of the era in altered states of consciousness. He created a fictional narrative that he exploited meet girls who otherwise would have never even noticed him. It was all a ‘schtick.’ Even he admitted it.

  37. When we were 8-12 years old, me and my sibling loved reading a German magazine which explained science to children. There was a special edition about the Bermuda Triangle, laying out all the outlandish claims and the most famous incidents. But it did also explain how there was no evidence for anything supernatural and that people just love to speculate wildly without evidence and some just spread fantasy stories to get fame and money. I think magazines like that one should be available to all children, to promote critical thinking and understanding of the scientific method early.

  38. Here's my little contribution to this bit of history. It was obviously not mentioned because the list itself is very extensive, but as an Argentine myself I'd like to mention a the participation of Argentina in the Gulf War which sticks like a sore thumb as one of two Latin American countries to take part of the Coalition (the other one being Honduras). It was a bold, controversial and very unpopular political move by our then president Carlos Menem and our country's first (and to this day, most recent) military involvement since the Falklands/Malvinas War. It was all part of his plan to reignite and improve diplomatic relationships with the US and Europe (and pretty much everyone in NATO), the beginning of what is popularly referred to as the "carnal relationships" with the United States. Around 500 troops, a destroyer, 2 frigates, 1 cargo ship, 2 helicopters (one destroyed) and 2 cargo planes were deployed to aid on the effort, under the name of Operation Bishop. The move had enough positive reaction by the big wigs at Washington that it led to the designation of Argentina as a Major Non-NATO Ally country. More importantly, however, and more tragically as well, Argentina's involvement on the Gulf War is often considered to be one of the main reasons behind the 1992 terrorist attack on the Embassy of Israel in Buenos Aires and the 1994 attack to the Argentine-Israelite Mutual Association (AMIA in Spanish) which left 22 and 85 dead respectively. To date, the only terrorist attacks carried out in our soil by a foreign actor. Carlos Memem was son of Syrian immigrants and a Sunni Muslim-turned-Catholic, so there was a cultural aspect to it as well. To this day, no one has faced justice for these attacks. It really amazes me how such a minuscule and overall irrelevant aspect of such a conflict can actually have so many repercussions that most people aren't even aware of.

Man it’s so sad that American history education generally glosses over this era. some folk get a huge 404 error regarding anything in between the civil war and teddy Roosevelt. imho, the failure of reconstruction is one of the pillars of injustice that will continue to echo at least to the end of my lifetime and, unfortunately, possibly a lot longer. Listening to videos like this and others, where one doesnt necessarily need to be watching the sceeen to understand the subject matter being presented, are the next best thing in my opinion.   47. People don't know this now, but before all the scandals Nixon was seen as something of a visionary breathing new life into Washington. He came from a lower-class background and got into university on a merit-based scholarship making him look like an average working family man, helping maintain a dignified public image. His ultimate goal was to bring the two parties together into one by embracing the economic and welfare state policies of the Democrats whilst doing away with the faux progressivism of Democrats and absconding the "party of northern liberal Lincoln" street cred of the Republicans. Seen in his '68 and '72 campaign strategy, focusing on the Great Society in blue states and appealing to "conservative social attitudes" (i.e. be racist) in red states. This won him every state except MA, something no president since the implementation of universal suffrage has been able to accomplish. He was, of course, a paranoid bigoted crook.

  49. While I never believed the JFK conspiracies. I was shocked at how well documented and intensely investigated the assassination was. Its staggering how much proof they had and yet people still refuse to believe it. You couldn't have asked for a more open and shut case. Especially for the time. The investigation was thorough, and reached a standard of evidence that most convicted criminals don't have.
