  8. The New Roman Empire, that state so young and yet so old. That state where the power of the people tempered the power of the ruler, but who also commanded their obedience. That state where Church and State coexisted in a “symphonia,” where the clergy took care of the people's souls, and the Emperor was a deacon in service to Christ. There is something to be said about a state and a people who were fervently religious and yet down-to-earth. Constantine's acceptance of Christianity as the religion of the Roman Empire breathed new life into old Rome. P.S. It would be interesting to contrast Old and New Rome with that other great empire, the Chinese. What were the similarities? What were the differences?

Arnulf's kid, Louis the Child has some pretty heartbreaking story as well, if you're partial to the theory of him bring depressed

  33. Awesome video, just one point about the Russian revolution. The Monarchy wasn't overthrown by the bolsheviks, but by the provisional government, which was pro-democratic. The bolsheviks would later coup that governmennt during it's elections, which ended in a brutal civil war.

  50. Oh, as a Swiss with our history with the later Burgundians, this series is gonna be spicy 😁 On a more general note, I like learning about the origins of our medieval world from late Antiquity. Sure we've heard of the Goths and the Huns killing a ton of Romans, but it's cool to see somebody cover the lesser known actors. Good job, looking forward to the next entry!
