Cheers Mitch, great vid as always!
Totally agree about the recent requests for wage increases, nationwide. It's not the time for it as we could just end up with runaway inflation. It would make far more sense for the government to address those who are below a certain wage bracket right now and then revisit those above that wage bracket once inflation is under control.
This is because, an experienced train driver who's on £50k+ likely isn't going to struggle anywhere near as much as a new train driver who's on an entry wage.
I imagine I'll get a bunch of comments from people telling me I'm a terrible human but I think we need to approach the situation logically, rather than blanket increase an entire sector's wages by a set percentage. I'd argue that anyone who disagrees doesn't quite understand the situation that we're approaching as a country - either that, or they don't understand how runaway inflation would be far worse. I think that they all deserve the pay rise but it's literally the worst timing for it, economically.
I'm old enough to remember seeing the exodus on the highstreet back in 2008 but I feel like this is going to be far worse, sadly (hopefully I'm wrong). And let's hope Russia doesn't decide to capitalise on our global vulnerability during the next couple of years.
After the government spent the £300-400 billion on getting us through covid-19, they should've been hiking rates way earlier imo.
At the very latest, back in Feb when Russia invaded. It all feels a bit "too little, too late".
I've been thinking all of this for months but it's obviously reassuring to hear other people voicing their concerns. Cheers again & keep it up
Edit: I just read this back and it sounds insanely doom & gloom. I think we'll get through it as a country but I just wish they'd apply logic and act earlier (feels like the covid response all over again). P.s. I'm much more light-hearted irl, I promise
