  22. the more i look at the interwar years the more crazy they seem, and more i see the VERY long shadow of modern war. It wasn't the treaty of Versailles or the handling of the aftermath of WW1 that caused WW2, but it seem the WW1 and the atrocities of modern war, sent people home with a fundamental loss of faith in the current pillars of power, as a results extreme ideologies emerged from both the left and the right. The US retreated from the world and embraced isolationism and experimented with such things as prohibition. Britain focused it's attention on clamping down on it's colonies many of which went into open rebellion after the promises made to get them to fight the Central powers in WW1 were promptly broken. Russia went to the far left with Communism while at the same time the fear of communism spread clampdowns and in some cases extreme right wing groups such as the Fascists and the Nazis, and in the new countries made from the ashes of the Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian Empire internal wars for control of the countries were waged and strange new ideologies were vying for control in spheres of power all over the world. I'm finding the more that i look at it, all those history classes which take and lump people together according to modern country names makes it very difficult to understand just how radical the difference in how people viewed themselves and their homeland before the rise of nationalism that precipitated WW1 and now and just how drastically and SUDDENLY modern war had torn the old pillars of power and the insanity that follows when old pillars of power are torn down so suddenly.

  42. This is an amazing episode! This is my field of study and I am so glad to see it represented so well! My honors thesis is on Japanese politics during WWII and you did a really good job on this video! I'm always a little critical of your WW2 series for being a bit Euro-centric, but I understand that the conflicts in Asia are so complex that to do it justice you would really need a whole show to run in parallel with your current one to keep up with events, and there are not many Westerns who really dive into East-Asian in the early 20th century with enough knowledge of the languages and cultures to do it justice. I had to learn both Japanese and Mandarin to do my undergraduate research, and even still I feel like I would need to master more Yue dialects and learn more traditional Kanji to really be able to read 1st party sources without dependence on 3rd party translators. Sometimes I wish I had the charisma, time, and money to do a series like yours focusing on my field of study. In any case, I'm delighted that this turned out so well!

  45. Although I generally support debate on controversial historical subjects in order to get closer to what really happened, I too extend my thanks for the ban on outright denying the holodomor. In my mind, it is the same sort of offensive gas-lighting of history that extremists seem to use in denying the holocaust, and should be discouraged by serious, evidence-following historians. Thank you for explaining some of the more important evidence. Also, I have to say that I wasn't aware of the extension of the same policies to the Kyrgyz population, even after spending some time in Bishkek (it goes some way toward explaining the animosity of some Kyrgyz to ethnic Russians in the post-Soviet country, and why a lot of Russians left the region in the 1990s). That seems a topic worthy of further personal study. Thanks again for sharing.

  47. Two of my great grandfathers fought in the Silesian Uprisings, and one of them was actually a founding member of the "Sokół" sport associacion in Katowice/Kattowitz. They were both murdered by the NKVD in 1940.
