I am constantly impressed and amazed that not only The Great War/week by week, and Time Ghost, and the coming "sequel" for WW2 are still forging strongly ahead, but that you and your team haven't suffered massive burn-out due to the huge workload in all those behind-the-scenes moments, all that research, proofing and fact-checking, scriptwriting, practice, editing, recaps, public relations and social media presences, budgeting... Seriously. This is an awesome feat in educational history, and one that seems so unimaginably colossal, and you all deserve the highest of praise for dedicating yourselves to taking such a comprehensive look back to the past, and one which with benefit of hindsight keeps away from most of the bias that one tends to get from history books or lessons teaching one or two sides of the wars, especially the... I guess it'd be called western bias? Giving a fresh look at the lesser-told sides of history really puts a lot of what led to the outbreak of WW2 and all that followed in perspective, and is a beautiful opportunity to learn from both the mistakes and triumphs of the past which now might be starting to seem bland, or so normal they lie forgotten, for those mistakes to resurge again in new contexts would be a terrible shame.

  14. Another fun note about Lord Byron - his daughter Ada is none other than Ada Lovelace, arguably the first computer programmer in history. Her mother was so salty about Byron's infidelity and perceived madness that she refused to let Ada study poetry or other humanity subjects. Instead Ada only was allowed to learn the sciences and math. She became a gifted amateur mathematician and wrote a theoretical programming language for Babbage's analytical engine to allow the machine to compose music. She, however, was a lifelong alcoholic and blew most of her fortune on horse racing, so it seems that Dad's genes managed to sneak some influence past Mom.

  17. The flipping and flopping of the various characters in this episode is very telling. When looking back on history we often give more credit to characters as "great thinkers" or "visionaries" because of our perspective that allows us to see the whole timeline from start to finish. More often than not they were just a bunch of confused and clueless individuals who were just trying to figure the world out with no real direction for where they're headed. They were willing to experiment with all types of ideas and happily changed as the tides pulled them in whichever direction happenstance would take them. Socialism today, republican the next, fascist in the end.

  33. One of the examples of this case is the “Bersiap” period, which was mentioned in the last episode, where nationalists persecuted those who allegedly supported the dutch. I’ve never seen it mentioned in the school textbook, let alone hear about it from my teacher. I’ve only come to know about it when i had interest in learning about my home town’s history, Depok, which was once a significant dutch residential area and has a christian majority. To my surprise, my elderly christian neighbor told me she is a survivor of that time when I asked her if she knew anything about the bersiap period. she told me tales of how she and her family had to hide in the thickly jungled river valleys in the day to avoid the youth who go door to door in search of “dutch supporters” to “punish”, and can only return to their homes at night. Many civilians were slain, houses burnt to the ground. It was a really sad part of the history, and to know it all happened at the place where I live. It scares me how easily it is to sweep incidents like this under the rug. I hope to uncover more of the dark side of the revolution.

  39. This is a great series. It's IMO even better than your series about the Great War. The Great War has been covered in detail before, but the interwar period hasn't. Also, I think that The Great War was the end of the old era, and the new era which we are now still living in started with the end of the Great War. To understand the world we live in now, you must understand the events of this time.
