  1. My father believed in parental alienation. He was a diagnosed narcissist who was very abusive to us. I knew at an extremely young age, 5-6, that I hoped my mom would divorce my dad so I wouldn't have to see him anymore. He cited all those parental alienation arguments on Facebook but the truth is, I never loved my father. He was abusive and toxic and my life was absolutely better without him in it. No one convinced me to never see him or talk to him. That was MY decision.

  5. I think good comparison is therapy is like going to cooking lessons. You're there to learn how to cook better, it's not the teachers job to make you a meal, and how well you cook outside of lessons depends how much you practice outside of class, you also can't blame the teacher for your bad cooking if you won't use the right equipment, or the right ingredients. The problem is a lot of people think going to therapy is like going to a restaurant and you can just order good mental health.

  6. When i hear "daddy issues" i just cringe. In this day and age i've been exposed to a lot of men and guys who fetishes women with "daddy issues" because they like the idea of a "broken girl" with mental health issues or unhealthy coping mecanisms. It makes me physically ill.

Just because youā€™re studying for a social major like nursing or teaching doesnā€™t mean you have to be extraverted. I think she's afraid that if she admits that homelessness isn't 100% a result of laziness then she's admitting there are external, uncontrollable factors.   24. "Only one of us has a doctorate, and it's not you." -- Burn, baby, burn! As a trained philosopher and political scientist, I have seen this guy's rhetorical tactics so many times. Attacking the speaker versus actually bringing substantive counterarguments is meant to make you feel insecure and question your own perception of reality. It's a bad faith approach. In my 20s and early 30s, I used to mind this stuff a lot more. Then I realized I didn't have to opt into the game.

  25. What's wild to me is that this is yet another example of adults wanting to put the child last in cases where the child's wants and needs should be the priority (like divorce). The feelings of the "alienated" parent don't matter as long as the child is healthy and happy. Claiming that you're being alienated is, to me, a sign that you don't truly care about your child's needs, you just want control. A parent that truly is in a situation where their ex is turning their kid against them isn't going to use these terms.

About the birthday cake video, "mordida", which is what the older woman was yelling, translates to "bite" in spanish and it's a mexican tradition in which we push people into the cake (I have no idea why lol) and it's quite common for people to opt out precisely because some people go batshit. For instance, if you took a long time to get ready for your special day, maybe you tried extra hard on your make up, you'd likely avoid the tradicional pushed-into-a-f*cking-cake mordida, and maybe go for a careful bite into a slice of cake, so you'd tell people around you that NO ONE IS ALLOWED TO PUSH YOU. What the older woman did seems too aggressive, so I agree that it does seem driven by animosity, but it might be overlooked since she can say "It's a tradition!!"

  34. The ides of disliking your shadow-self in others as much as you do in yourself brings to mind a guy I studied with, that I deeply disliked.. I felt like he pretended to be confident. I'm pretty sure that I was/am deeply afraid of having to pretend confidence, or being someone that pretends confidence. I'm working on it by accepting that side of myself, and allowing myself to express insecurity without shame of myself, and that compassion helps getting over it. Just an aspect of the mantra that all emotions are valid, in that sense.

  44. I'm currently going through a divorce and it is ambicable but you are basically hitting it on the head. Our marriage was dying on the vine and neither of us realized the extent of that death but it wasn't being nurtured anymore. It was being taken for granted so there was no intimacy, growth, appreication, or passion. It was like our marriage was stuck in suspended animation and those things were just not actually being acknowledged and truly worked on. I finally began to notice things a few months before I asked for a separation and eventual divorce and noticing these things and the extent of my unhappiness was the key I needed to finally unlock that door of complacency. I don't hate him and he doesn't hate me but it was me realizing I deserved better and more and he was not emotionally able to give that to me. We had become roommates in additon to me being his caretaker and I never want to be put in that positon again.
