  1. Seeing the tea near the white fabric gave me flashbacks to the last time I dared have a hot mug of tea near me while hand-sewing. My thread wanted to develop a loop, causing me to flick my hand to loosen it. This sent the thimble flying off my finger and PLOP! Right into my tea mug, the contents of which exploded like a battle scene from a WW2 naval movie. And there was my lovely, creamy cotton fabric soaking up the spillage like, well, cotton fabric. And that is why tea time and sewing time are now two distinctly separate times for me. More's the pity.

  13. I remember watching "The house of Elliot" when I was younger and discovering this tidbit of information about retouching photos. Obviously didn't just take the shows word that this happened but went like yourself to Google what I could (at that time). It's great to show the world that the "perfect flawless picture" isn't just a modern issue.

  14. So for rose water you need a bigger pot with a bowl in the middle, a lid, and ice. You boil the roses in water and the steam rises and collects on the lid (which is upside down and has ice in it) and drips down into the bowl. Kind of like distillation. That’s probably why it didn’t separate. It was tea not water.

  15. I can barely wrap my head around the sheer quantity of gathering, and of course all stroked and secured in place! To do that at all (let alone getting yourself to return to the project after a big break) takes serious fortitude. As usual your story-telling is exquisite, I especially found the transition from NY to London to be seamless and simple--easy to accept and move on because it wasn't jarring at all despite switching to a new space. bravo on that! Finally, my more casual commentary: 1. The thing with having a signature font is now I hear your voice when reading that font 2. I love love love your grey shawl, it's so HUGE and cozy looking, did you get it second hand or is there a lovely craftsperson whose website I can patronize?

  20. The bit you were saying about how demonstrations help to humanize history made me tear up a bit! I think that it's really easy to treat so much of history as just stories, but we have to know and to remember that these were real, living people, who had daily struggles and internal lives and who left their own marks on the world we live in today. Sidenote: This reminds me of when I was like 17 and my parents took me to see a Theodore Roosevelt impersonator and I cried, hahah.

  23. Oh this is a marvelous insight into truly making your style your own. To define it on your terms and to truly wear what you want from whichever time you want. I love that you three own your style and confidently wear them. It is so empowering and just plain cool. Makes me want to really think about what I like, and to do the same as current fashions rarely hold any interest in me. Huzzah to you wondrous ladies.

  25. Honestly, pre-finishing the seams is a genius thing to do, and I think that's something I might incorporate into my own sewing, especially for massive skirts. It's just easier than trying to wrangle this huge thing in order to finish the seams. Also, a princess skirt has suddenly risen to the very top of my to do list. Who'dave thought that an extra bit at the top of the waist would make such a difference in how it looks? Amazing.

  28. OMG that green striped suiting wool looks like the stuff I bought a while back... ...I bought enough that I was able to make a walking skirt, a waistcoat, a cropped Eton jacket and then some cycling bloomers. The price made my bank account cry but oh my gosh it was worth it.

  29. I think part of the issue with modern media is that it is a much truer representation of real life due to the wonders of modern cameras. If I look at an old painting it's logical to presume it's not accurate. And old photos while more real seem more like a distorted mirroring of reality due to graininess, colour, etc. However if I look at a modern photo my brain is automatically assuming it's accurate because it looks basically as I'd be seeing it with my own eyes. End of the day the best thing I found was learning to love myself and try to not compare myself. It's not easy and I don't always succeed but I'm certainly happier!

  31. I absolutely feel the exact way. I tease about when I’m in public I’m constantly asked if I’m headed to a renaissance festival or a costume party. I do believe there’s a way to dress for a daily wearing of historical clothing but also a comfortability. I tend to be found in clothing, mostly muslins and cottons. How about you? What do you wear daily? I’ve even found wearing daily elastic pantaloons to practice my yoga in. I’m fascinated by the living in a 21st century but acting as if I’m from the 1800’s. Garden party... anyone?

Now if only we could get over this pesky habit of trying to dictate the lives, needs, and preferences of other individuals based on our personal standards that probably are not applicable to THEM as individuals, maybe we could make some progress as a society. Alas.

Pieces form into clothes, and even those clothes become outfits before the machine that gave them birth sews again. In one Age, called the First Age by some, an Age long past, an Age yet to come, inspiration rose in mind of a YouTuber seamstress. It was not the beginning - there are neither beginnings nor endings to the turning of the Wheel of the Sewing Machine - but it was a beginning.

  43. Nice. I like that you don't only explain what to do, but why do it that way. In school we were taught sewing for one project only and it was so non-passionate, so dull, so badly explained, I didn't think I'd ever want to sew again after that. I even forgot all I learned, so this is super useful to learn again. "again". I don't count the first time. (final piece was pyjama pants, made out of... curtain fabric. teacher's choice.)

  44. I actually made a costume for The Chosen episode with the crowd of 5000! They sent out a pdf with costuming guidelines for each ethnic group and let extras decide which they wanted to represent. I know for a fact the costume I made was not historically accurate, but she was an extra 😂 it got the job done.
