  2. As a young-ish man who just recently got into sewing to fix up some of my clothes, I resonate so much with the line, "Everyone should know how to sew. It's not a feminine thing. It's not a delicate, floofy thing. It's a basic, practical skill; To be able to mend and maintain the things that you wear." At Thanksgiving I mentioned it to my cousin who sews and she seemed taken aback and said, "You don't normally hear guys admit they enjoy sewing." and I reacted with a very similar sentiment to your quote above. A long time ago I wanted to make my own hooded, full-length cloak, and now that I'm getting back into sewing (by hand, because I don't have a working machine, but I DO have all the time in the world), I'm looking more seriously into patterning and designing it. Honestly it's pretty ambitious just because I wanted to try to lean towards natural fabrics as much as I can, and make a removable wool lining, but I figure that at least the lining can wait until after I've made the base cloak.

  5. I think this is fun! But i would caution not to take these too seriously for another reason. It seems clear to me that this AI was trained on European history. As far I can see Bernadette did not specify Western European portraiture but she got images of pretty fair skinned folks and ""historical dress""" from mostly western Europe. I wish the AI had generated some portraits from some other parts of the world or cultures. There is nothing wrong with European history, but I would love to see some more varied cultural dress when searching like this (this goes for search engine results as well)

Such a great point - purpose bought costumes designed explicitly to be worn once and trashed is so silly when you can make or thrift or scrounge together something that will look the same in terms of effectiveness and quality, but will save you some cash!

  13. Small note: References to isolating diseased individuals is as old as the Torah, such as in Leviticus, effectively finalized in 538-332 BC (if not older). There were a few things done to "purify" those affected, but one of which was moving them out of the community for a set period and a cleansing of them, their clothes, and their home. Presumably, both through natural disease fighting and whatever the cleansing rituals, this worked, as people were able to come back into the fold after a time, and presumably didn't relapse in a short enough period to be banished again.

As someone who is used to hand sewing little projects such as mending but new to properly making seams, finding the grain, using a thimble and so forth. So fun fact, I’m actually in Tulip Fever as an extra (one of the singing orphans lol) and no one has seen that film and in my head I was thinking, ‘I wonder how accurate Tulip Fever was... would be weird if Bernadette mentioned it’ and then SHE DID and I SCREAMED.   18. This was chef's kiss perfection. I am in awe that his lordship tolerated any of them for more than .10 seconds. The only "costume" I ever successfully got one of my pigs to cooperate with was placing my all chocolate girl on a piece of aluminum foil and a "pad" of model magic butter on her back. She was the cutest baked potato for about 30 seconds 😄

  24. I completely understand the waistband thing--it's about spreading out the pressure so it doesn't cut in. I didn't have a brace, but my scoliosis curve is roughly bra band area, so I can't stand "normal" bras. Even if they don't cut in, the muscle on the inside of the curve gets super angry. Sports bras don't concentrate the pressure nearly as much. I do really want a corset after seeing your first corset video series.

As someone who knits and spins and thus notices immediately when my craft is not accurately depicted in ads or other visual media, I always wondered if sewists and other craftsfolk had the same experience. Turns out the answer is yes! =) Also I love that this isn't a roast or even really criticism, just a gentle observation of "this is accurate/realistic, this is not, but here is why that makes sense."

  33. I'm so glad Morgan mentioned the need to dress for work! I'm in mortuary school, and as much as I wish I could dress like a Victorian Lesbian Doctor (aka Can I Please Be Bramwell), I can't very well do that at a funeral, or in the prep room. What I can do is wear a nice skirt and my AD shoes and use a ribbon instead of elastic in my hair. So while my goal for my non-work wardrobe is to eventually be 100% historical, I'm completely satisfied with being around 20%-50% history bounding in my work clothes (especially considering I need to be able to wash things in the machine). It still feels Me, and it still feels Right. And I'll add to it! I'm eventually going to make a "modern" walking skirt, and a new jacket-y blazer thing, and it'll be excellent. And you're so right about historical fashions often being completely practical! My next sewing project is actually a petticoat to help keep me a little warmer in the cemetery. I'm also glad I'm not the only one who needs to get to know their clothes before being comfortable, haha. ANYWAY sorry for rambling ily bye

  34. I really love the idea that fashion has slowly become more and more about figuring out personal aesthetic. Like, trends obviously still exist, but nothing is really “out” anymore. You see a body in 1950’s and it’s just “huh, she’s a vintage gal” and then the next person is in top hats and Victorian corsets and “she’s steampunk”. There seems to be less “oh, how out of date” or what have you. It’s nice. Thank you for sharing ❤ Bernadette, it’s been as educational and lovely as I have come to appreciate

  40. I think that weird circle in the “pilgrim” outfit is intended to imitate the modern Amish and Mennonite dresses, which do have a wide, round collar. Most depictions of pilgrims in children’s media depict them looking a lot like modern Amish and old-order Mennonites.

  42. As a guy who is trying to learn how to sew and how to make his own suit, this is really interesting and helpful. Most people on youtube that are into sewing are women who focus on women's fashion which is cool and inspiring to me, even as a guy (I'm actually subscribed to a lot of women who are sewing enthusiasts/costume makers/vintage fashion aficionados etc), but it's nice to find something like this that I can definitely apply to one of my own projects. 😊
