  3. I've heard when life hands you lemons, make lemonade. I really never identified as life has handed me a lot at times, but never lemons. When my daughter was eight, she needed angel wings to dance onstage, so I made "couture" wings out of coffee filters because that's what life gave me at the time. They were just as stunning as if they had arrived from FAO Swartz. I'm having such a tough time in lockdown. I'm immunocompromised, and I won't be going anywhere for a while. I have put down my sewing, frustrated as I can't go pick out the trimmings to complete my looks. Thank you for bringing to mind I don't need the perfect lace to create beautiful things. I just need what I already have, reimagined and reengineered. Thank you for reminding me of what couture is and what it is for. I agree with Ms. Hay. This is a fantastic couture creation, and it brought beauty into my life today. Now off to recreate a Worth gown from old linens......

  4. Really liked this video! :) I used to have a way more negative view of corsets a long while back, mostly due to being backed into a corner. I made myself some (very unprofessional) corsets back then and all of a sudden, I was approached by many girls in my acquaintance who wanted me to make them one (for free, of course). The motives I ranged from 'I want to be sexy for my partner' to 'I want to win my exboyfriend back', so some of those reasons didn't seem all that healthy to me. The weirdest thing were the young girls approaching me on Youtube though. There must have been at least a handfull, seemingly asking for my 'blessing' to go into tightlacing. One even outright stated that she wasn't willing to wait until she'd hit puperty and she wanted those womanly curves NOW! That thought kindof scared me, 13-14yearold girls stitching their own 'corsets' together to go into unsupervised tightlacing. I always tried to persuade them to at least wait until they were fully grown to know what kind of figure they were going to have. I still maintain to this day that a corset isn't something you should put on because you're looking for a shortcut to solve your body image issues. That's just an unhealthy state of mind.

  5. I think maybe, a lot of the reason people think corsets are bad isn't from corsets themselves. They either disagree with the idea that there should be a "correct" body shape (think: the pushback against diet teas and waist trainers on Instagram) or they disagree that women should be forced to wear anything, even if it isn't evil, just on principle (think: why do women have to shave or wear bras?). Corsets fit both of these, they're garments that you were expected to wear, that make you conform to a particular shape. Or that's how folks nowadays see them anyways. These are just my musings, not researched facts.

  12. BERNADETTE BANNER....🤦🏼‍♀️....you THINK it “came out nice enough to wear regularly in everyday dress”...???? IT IS SPECTACULAR!!! You worked out the tailoring, the adjustments needed for your specific spinal anatomy, the padding is perfection & the stays give it a beautiful structure! If I had accomplished something that wonderful for my 1st foray into tailoring, I would 1) wear it a minimum of four times a week & 2) stop everyone who commented on it that I HAD HAND MADE IT, using historical patterns nonetheless!! Plus I would make at least 4 more in different fabrics, lol! You should not be selling yourself short in anyway; regarding ANY piece of this outfit! I have worn period authentic Civil War reproduction undergarments/corsets/day dresses & ball gowns for YEARS...& to be perfectly honest, I am so glad I am not part of it anymore. Because, unlike Costume College where you are encouraged to learn & can ask questions about specific aspects of a garment; attending a Civil War Ball is walking in front of a firing squad. I have literally seen (& heard) the dressing down of a young lady who had made her first period correct ball gown. She was told to leave because she had added a zipper (which was absolutely not visible unless you were inspecting the gown) under the modesty panel of her skirt for extra security. I wish I knew if she was still involved with reenactments as I would love for her to know about Foundations Revealed as well as costume college! Please know that when you are showing the small (or medium size) mistakes you rarely make: they are a comfort to those of us who may be at a crossroads wondering how many layers of fabric my tiny bird snips could actually cut through when nothing is going right!!! (What...I know I’m not the only one who wonders if I can stab holes into a bodice that just WILL NOT MEET UP PER THE PATTERN 🤬 with my little birds...I know there are others out there)! You are such a breath of fresh air & it makes such a difference when I’m frustrated with my project & need to calm myself down. Kathy is also quickly becoming a favorite of mine as well, it is easy to see that you were absolutely either sisters or best friends in a past life. Such a rare & wonderful gift that is! Never change my dear, except to stop doubting your finished products! Doubting is strictly for pattern making & mock ups only. I CANNOT WAIT to see the finished Holmes & of course, Watson!   23. I was doing an archiving project and I found out that not all Victorian /Edwardian clothes were tiny . Even though that is what you see in museums . But because they did so much making and mending and reusing that the larger dresses were re-cut in a smaller sizes because the large amounts of fabric for a bigger person was expensive so the dress can be soled to a smaller lady for a new dress. So a England modern size 22 dress was re cut into a 14 then that re cut into a 8 and because of that we see the 8 in a museum and we think they were all tiny Witch also means that there are very fue existing examples of larger clothes from those eras because they don’t exist any more. They were cut down . Unless that they were so special to that person that they kept and didn’t sell on

I remember early on in this project when you were like "Ugh will people even like this if you're only here for historical sewing?" 1) I'm very curious how many people are ONLY interested in historical sewing and not also costuming/cosplay (oh man the things a viewer census survey on google forms or something type thing could tell you about what we all like and don't like... I drool at the data possibilities), 2) It's INREDIBLE to see how knowledge you built doing historical sewing leant itself so spectacularly to this kind of fantastical application (building on the foundations of history!), 3) It turned out AMAZING!!!!

  29. Are you familiar with Dr. Wu Liande (traditionally spelled as "Wu Lien Tuh" ) ~ the Malaysian born Chinese doctor who invented the 1st variant of the N95 masks? He was a doctor assigned to combat the highly virulent Manchurian Pneumatic Plague of 1910-1911. Because he realized very early on that the extremely contagious plague was spread by exhaled droplets (hence Pneumatic) that he improved the normal surgical masks and made them safe for the wearer in contagious environments. During January there were over 100 daily deaths in various cities of Manchuria. His resolute efforts in containing and eradicating the plague pretty much sent the plague into remission and the plague never left the confines of Manchuria. For his efforts, Wu became the 1st Malaysian and also Chinese born citizen nominated for the Nobel Prize.

  33. From my chemist spouse: Iron sulfate, an acid, is not oxidizing the hair--it's crashing out of solution so you have actual iron in the hair that's colouring the hair fibres. Oxidizers typically lighten the hair, not darken it. As a solution, the acid in the iron sulfate is eating away at the hair and being neutralized in the process, and as a result, the iron's adhering to the hair.

At the end you look like you were plucked right out of one of those Edwardian photos of people on holiday in Brighton by the seaside. I dress exclusively in traditionally men's clothes but the urge to make a lacey blouse to frolic in is incredibly tempting. Can we all not, as humans, just agree that past a certain point, there is absolutely nothing to be gained from judging others' choice of clothing, unless it's a wildly unethical one, far beyond the infamously bad but affordable fast-fashion brands. I'm talking meat dresses and other weirdness that nobody gains from. Laissez people faire whatever the heck they want. If they ask, they may be curious and/or interested and it could spark a fun (if initially unwelcome) conversation. If they're being rude to you there's little point in wasting your time explaining your personal style.

I rescued it from being sent to auction (the actual tragedy of losing a family heirloom like that!) because I knew I would want to expand my knowledge beyond hand-sewing one day. As the daughter of a hair stylist (who assisted on creating products - bleach, coloring and perms) I watched with much interest. Also, my mom even made me do the MOST Victorian thing of going with her to do her client’s hair of when they PASSED AWAY!! Yup, I was there with my mom when she did dead people’s hair. Also, in your commercial you stated flavor when I think you meant scent…since you don’t want people to eat the soap tablets?!
