I’ve become interested in this topic after a close friend of mine recommended reading Napoleon Hill’s ‘Think and Grow Rich’ (1937) which many people credit as the birth of the financial self-help publishing industry. I’m still in the middle of reading it, but I’m struck by the religious rhetoric and very odd references to mysticism (reaching out with your subconscious mind to the ether to create changes in physical reality).
People like Napoleon Hill, Dale Carnegie, Norman Vincent Peale, prosperity gospel preachers, books like The Secret, The Celestine Prophecy, The Power of Positive Thinking, they build upon movements like New Thought, the Law of Attraction, New Age spirituality. There is an almost cult-like mentality that forms around this industry. It’s very bizarre and disconcerting. And that style of thinking propagates itself through more mainstream industries like the diet industry, online education, MLMs. And people continue to fall for this stuff.
Thank you for bringing attention to this subject in this video. If you’ve helped someone avoid personal financial ruin or destroying a valuable relationship, it’s all worth it.
