  2. Archaeology is a kind of hobby for me. However, I, like many posters here, had never heard of these people or of the narrator, Dan Davis. Davis cites all of the leading writers on archaeological matter and the people are well cited for a group with their traits. Thank you, Dan Davis for posting this.

  4. Thank you Sir. You certainly do weave magic. As a young boy, my across the street buddies were twin boys. Their father was an Englishman. He was a sailor in Royal Navy during WW II . His ship took damage and he was wounded. His ship came here to Charleston, South Carolina for repairs in our shipyard. While he was recovering, he met a local girl. After the war, they were married and settled here. He was talented carpenter who built sailing dinghies in his workshop. He taught how to sail and compete in local regattas. While we watched him build his boats, he regaled us with the adventures of Sir Francis Drake. He was a good man.

  5. Great video, really interesting. I've heard people are close to death are met by someone who they were close to but has already died. I wonder if these boys expected to be met by their particular dog that they'd killed when the reached the afterlife? Maybe this then changed over time, and dogs or wolves became the guardian of the underworld.

  7. I'm reminded of the idea that you couldn't use a lance on horseback as a shock trooper before the invention of stirrups. Then some people tested it and found out that you could even use a lance on horseback without the benefit of any sort of riding gear. Instead the stirrup probably better enabled melee on horseback, making it so a fighter could extend his reach by using his legs to regain his balance and make it that much harder for footmen to dehorse him.

  11. The first horsemen were the kids that raised the little foal, with the help of several of the old tribe elders. They played with it, used it to help them gather firewood and other items.. As the colt grew, and several of the youngsters managed to learn to ride it, the young horse and rider began scouting for the tribe, accomplishing in hours, what would otherwise have taken days. Thus the value of the young horse and rider was understood beyond question. Similarly, paleo kids were probably the first to use flattened frozen hides/skins as play to slide down snowy slopes and hills.. Huge fun and learning experience.

The icon of St. George is based upon the Thracian Rider or Thracian Horseman and is part of the Pagan Cult of the Danubian Knights/Danubian Horsemen which predates the well known Christian image with the dragon. The images are almost identical except that in the original Thracian Horseman instead of the dragon was a boar but interestingly enough same Thracians/Dacians had a dragon on their flag also known as Draco.

  18. Thank you so much for this video! I’ve visited Kamyana Mohyla/ Stone Tomb in 2021. That is a beautiful place, full of signs from different era and people. Bought many books in a souvenir shop, and a little stelae even, which is now travelling with me. Now Mohyla occupied and who knows what was done to complex and museum. For Kherson region museums occupation was horrible. Please make a video about it, If you have a time❤

  21. How do you suppose the 'koryonos' was chosen? Are there any good theories or evidence on the subject? Was he a boy like the others in the koryos? Or was he an older proven warrior? If a boy, could he have been one chosen based on merit? Perhaps he was chosen based on his descent from the leaders of the clan - that is, a higher ranking boy. Perhaps, too, he may have been chosen by the gods in a rite. Whoever he was, the success of the Koryos and the survival of the clan's sons depended on his judgement.

I well remember our primary school teacher Mr Dunn telling us, "Sir Francis Drake, took gold from the Spanish Galleons, but he didn't really steal it because that gold had been stolen, by the Spanish from the native people, it didn't belong to the Spanish they had stolen it, so Francis Drake took it off them". "When he got home, the Spanish King complained to Elizabeth and she was going to punish him, but Sir Francis said he had taken to gold as a present for her, because she as Queen would know what to do with it, and so the Queen changed her mind"... I've remembered that all these years.

I'd hate to find out how many things are wrong with me after the best medical teams spend millions testing me

  45. I'm only halfway into this, but just had to take a pause to say how much I loved this story telling, and the feeling of adventure it gives me. I have to commend you for the beautiful illustrations, pictures, video, music and well spoken storytelling. Have you perhaps thought about writing non-fiction books, after having studied it to the depths? I would certainly not mind reading it, or rather listening to audio-books of it, preferably with you yourself as the narrator of it. Great job Mr. Davis, looking forward to more, so changing the subscription to get notified for every new one.

  46. Thanks for the fascinating video. I think it's interesting that during the Hellenistic age cultures outside of Greece adopted Greek style helmets and armour like in North Africa, Italy and parts of the Middle East. I wonder if that was also the case in the Bronze Age, with many different cultures deriving their horned helmets from a single original culture or civilisation through trade as your video states. Maybe it was Mycenae or the civilisations of the Near East that kicked off this trend. I remember reading that samurai helmets from 16th century Japan also had horns attached but they were manufactured from lightweight materials that were lacquered. Perhaps Bronze Age helmets didn't have real animal horn attached to them but were made from other materials (maybe wood, leather?) Which would be more practical for combat as they'd be lighter in weight and would be less likely to snag on an enemy's weapon.
