  1. Hey Dan! Just wanted to say thank you for releasing such excellent, informative, and well-formed content that still has the clear narrative wit of an author behind it. Your investment of time into the history of the Indo-Europeans got me to reconsider going to college, and now, I'm working towards a Biological Anthropology degree, with the intent of focusing primarily on the history of Indo-European groups and their effects on latter cultures, as well as their origins. I hope to write a dissertation on the Cucuteni Trypilia culture, and the western Mediterranean origins of several of the Sea Peoples, two topics I've invested a ton more time doing personal research on since your videos sparked my curiosity. Anyways, I'll be buying Godborn very soon, and thanks again!

  2. I recall the passage from Tacitus' Germania you mentioned that referred to the rite of being unkempt until the slaying of one's tribe's enemy. I belive he was speaking of the Chatti who lived in whats now modern Hesse/Saxony. Thank you tremendously for preserving the lesser known periods of history!

  3. The large amount of charcoal was probably met through coppice or pollard practices rather than clear cutting of forests. Perhaps forest management that accompanied metallurgy would make interesting topic for a future video

  4. A lovely Sunday morning installment. I’m originally from the north east of Scotland now living in the Pacific Northwest of USA that’s heavily populated by Scandinavians and Eastern Europeans. Many of the locals think I’m Russian because of my looks. I’m certain that’s a result of the raiders who hit up the NE of Scotland “back in the day.”

  8. The seafaring abilities of these ancient peoples astounds me. Even without metal, they made and navigated craft capable of transporting huge cargoes or large numbers of people. Even reaching the Azores in the mid-Atlantic. Simply amazing.

  10. Having worn "bullet-proof"-vests and other modern body armor, modern and steel helmets, with weapons and kit for a few years in operations I find this very interesting. Trying to visualize their full kit, if a fighting soldier actually used this or just the chieftains etc is very fascinating. I appreciate that you are clear on what is known and what is speculation.

  13. The bronze club reminds me of a Chinese sword breaker, which is essentially an all metal club. I believe they also go back to the bronze age (there are bronze examples, but I don't know when they were made), although perhaps not as old as the time frame here. I don't see how they would be directly related, but it does show that it has functionality as a weapon. Also if that shape was carved in hardwood it could easily pass for a war club from any number of Pacific cultures. (Form following function, I would suggest.)

  14. you have no idea how much this vid made my day. im a farrier, i do this to live closer to my ancestors. i have been saying it for years theres missing info on the domestication of horses and we will find it in the step hunters/herders before the yamnaya and look at that there it is!!! i will ask people who float horse teeth on their opinions on the teeth wear patterns. i am so excited to hear more about this discovery in the future. finally proof that pushes the date back! As horses changed due to domestication so did tack and horsemanship one group the numidians, had an older style of horsemanship that they imported from anatolia. i believe it is a good historical account to use as reference to how early horsemanship would have looked like, likely not to dissimilar to the botai despite the thousands of years.

  20. Aww yeah! As a teenager I read the "Ramses" novels serie by the French author Christian Jacq: I wonder if you happen to come around some English translated versions of these books... One of the main characters was a Sardinian mercenary acting as a body guard of yound Ramses II, echoeing well to this video. These novels were so great! It also reminds me of the Egyptian novels saga from Wilbur Smith, one of my favorite adventure novelists.

  23. The clay covered log floors is really interesting. 6" logs have an something like an R-8 insulation value, whereas adobe only has R-2. I'm assuming that's the reason they wouldn't just dump clay on the ground. That's pretty sophisticated.

  29. I've been enjoying your novella on Audible and it reminds me of the idea/process/institution of "second son" in the Viking/Norman culture. Second sons settled in Russia, Italy, no doubt were involved in the several invasions of England, served as imperial guards in the Byzantine Empire and some claim that Norman second sons made up the majority in the First Crusade. "For glory and honor" may be an idea that is lost to modern mankind, there is no doubt it did exist.

It's interesting to note that Hopkins is the only person in history to hold the title 'Witchfinder General' as when I was younger I thought it was a generalised title given to witch hunters. I read Ronald Hutton's 'The Witch' from a library earlier this year and found it to be a fascinating and eye-opening global history of Witches and Witchcraft. I will try to check out the other books mentioned at the end of the video.

Just a note: for example icelandic Grettis saga (written in age of christianity) berserks were said to be bullies, and they were outlawed in Norway in 1015. Whether it had anything to do with christianity (and christian politics) or not, is up to debate (according to my memory/knowledge).

  42. I've been hearing all about the great empires - Rome, Greece, Babylon, Persia, Egypt, Mongols and so on my whole life. I love learning about those, but it's also great to hear about the ancient late Neolithic and Bronze Age cultures that came before these and gave birth to them. Things like videos on currency, weights and measures, and other mundane things that were a part of their lives help paint a picture of the entire culture and the people that make it up, not just their most famous members. So yes please, do the weights and measures.

  45. Another great video! I don't think anyone could ever argue that Richard wasn't a great warrior. As you pointed out, even the Islamic sources are respectful of his martial prowess. I still remain unconvinced of his being a great King. He never seems to care anything about England or the English except as a source of funding for his personal glory. No doubt he was popular among his subjects. I too would probably follow him to the gates of hell, but his absence allowed French invasion, and empowered John to become one of the most hated figures in British history. BTW Excellent job at sound editing. My heart was racing during the battle scenes.

  46. I have to wonder why wolves were used in some situations, particularly if it was a “bring your own” dog to sacrifice scenario. Men who didn’t have valid dogs? Men who chose not to use their own dogs and would rather risk the danger of hunting a wolf? Different social rank? I can say that if I were in that position and it was a valid option I would face down an entire wolf pack to capture one over killing a dog close to me. I think I would have little qualms killing enemy humans if I have to, but I’m closer to my dog than I am to most of my friends. I think I would gladly fight anyone to the death that would have me kill my dog (assuming it was happy and in good health).

  47. Absolutely remarkable. So many things describe a sophisticated, long lasting, but forgotten civilization. Sardinians were not mentioned in my History course. Those figurines are so well crafted, the singular edifications and burial traditions mean we should look deeper. Mediterranean has so many histories that are yet to be discovered.

  48. There are several distinct domestication events found in the DNA, and thought they domesticated themselves by hanging around the clan. There might have been others that were lost due to that particular line dying off or unelected during breeding. It is unfortunate that many strains of New World dogs have been lost. I think there are two still surviving, one is the Chihuahua.

  50. Fascinating video. I worked on this site as an archaeological volunteer in the summer of 1989, in the early stages of its excavation. We got to go down and explore the tunnels, which brought home just how extensive the workings are. There was so much bone in the site that most of it ended up in the spoil heaps, and I still have a few green-stained pieces I took as souvenirs. It's a pity this ancient mine isn't better known to the general public. In its own way it's just as impressive as any of the megalithic monuments or tombs that we associate with the Neolithic and Bronze Ages.
