  3. Just a hypothetical exercise, but imagine if a man of his ability and will power had been the prince of a reasonably strong and stable nation. He managed to make life very difficult for much larger, well trained, and better armed invading armies. Without the horror of his youth and the instability of his position, he may have been a very different kind of ruler remembered for his bravery and tactical prowess rather than his brutality and extreme cruelty.

  8. Plagues have always fascinated me since I was a kid, the concept of an invisible force passing through a society and killing off a good chunk of the population captures my imagination. Must have been terrifying for people who didn't understand what bacterial/viral infection was, look how people have reacted to the one doing the rounds at the minute which is barely a ripple compared to the megatsunami that was the black death or the plague of Justinian. If so many people are so frightened now of a relatively benign disease that we understand how to treat and how it spreads, what must have gone through the minds of our ancestors as their friends and family keeled over in droves?

  14. I think this myth is so well-preserved because its exoteric nature can be easily seen in the night sky. The dog is identified as the star Sirius "Dog Star" in various cultures which guards the bridge, the Milky Way. I found its Indo-European root *sar- in many daughter languages with the meaning glowing or burning. Which makes sense, considering that Sirius was orange-red until the Middle Ages (it's white today). Therefore, Kerberos can be derived etymologically as "spotted with blood" or "stained with blood" (of the people who don't make it to the other side).

  19. I had no clue that such an urbanised group existed in that part of the world that long ago. I had always thought, based on Greco-Roman histories, that the steppes of the Ukraine and the Danube frontier were home to nothing but isolated and primitive nomadic tribes of horse warriors like the Scythians. To think that such an advanced urban culture existed in the same territory thousands of years earlier is amazing. Thank you for such an interesting, eye-opening, and informative video.

As a rider of dressage, I can readily see where riding a horse bareback without saddle or bridle would be extremely easy given time to adjust the body to relax and give "signals" through the seat bones and legs. I often rode my horse without saddle or bridle and found that by turning my torso, moving my legs back or forward, would cause my horse to turn or stop depending on pressure of my upper thigh or lower leg. Even turning my shoulders would cause change of direction. All is dependent on the rider's relaxation or minute tension, and going with the horses movement. I suspect early man would have wanted to move with the speed of a running horse at some time or another and would have eventually tried to get on the back of a horse just to go fast. I suspect all this happened much earlier than scientists believe as the curiosity of the human is far stronger than most believe.

  22. It's worth mentioning that the "Ying Yang" symbol was found on pots made by the Cucuteni-Tryplilla people, over 6000 years ago. Check out the similarity between the Yangshao and Cucuteni- Trypillia pots, it's mindblowing. They might have traded commercially and culturally.

  27. The existence of gold artifacts which could be interpreted as either helmets or bowls makes me think of an item mentioned by Miguel de Cervantes in his novel "Don Quijote." The crazy old knight errant Don Quijote dreams up, among other fantastical items, the "golden helmet of Mambrino." He later spots a traveling barber who has a metal bowl, which is one of the tools of his trade. Don Quijote immediately identifies it as the golden helmet of Mambrino, acquires it, and proceeds to wear it as a ridiculous looking helmet.

The most likely reason why the shaft of the arrow that killed him was removed, while the copper axe, his arrows and all of his belongings were left there, is that both the killer's arrow on his body and Ötzi's belongings in the hands of the killer, would have been damning evidencies. Like most murder victims, Ötzi knew his killer. They were of the same community, or from communities very close.

  31. It's the silliest thing that even in Scandinavia, the Viking Age officially begins and ends with events in the British Isles. It's like one day in 793 they up and went to Lindisfarne with this brand new concept of murder and pillaging - not to mention their recent invention: the viking ship. Then, in 1066, they completely stopped all that and became backward landlubbers.

  32. Hello Dan! Greetings from Sibiu (Romania)! Tărtăria-Gura Luncii, Alba county ( the infamous incised clay tablets, with symbols, were discovered here in 1961-the autumn campaign, by prof. Nicolae Vlassa-long story...), is indeed a complex prehistoric archaeological site (in recent studies there were identified elements of fortifications-ditches and palisade postholes-Luca 2016, „Tărtăria Rediviva”). Now, I'm studying for a master's degree at „Lucian Blaga” University of Sibiu (Department of History and Heritage Studies). The main subject of my Bachelor Thesis was about lithic industry (polished/ground and knapped stone tools) from Tărtăria. In 2021 and 2022 (summer campaigns), I have taken part in archaeological excavations here and I can assure all of you that, Vinča female clay figurines, are very THICC ;)!!! I'm pleased to see, that there is interest for the complex Neo-Eneolithic cultures in this part of Europe! Your high-quality documentaries contributed a lot to my passion for prehistory, so keep up the good work.

The bus made its way through the hills during the closing evening, and with the sun setting on cumulus clouds, the steep valley sides, lengthening shadows, and crooked graveyard headstones, you really got an eery sense as if Dracula could be real.

  42. I think the real mystery is why widespread use of metals never took hold in the Americas. The people of North America used copper to some extent for a while and then apparently stopped using it. In South America, they apparently even smelted a limited amount of copper alloys but AFAIK it never got significant use for weapons or tools. I would think copper and bronze would confer the same advantages in the Americas as it did in Europe but apparently for some reason the Native Americans didn't think so.

  46. the American west was briefly a parallel of the yamnaya culture with migratory wagon trains, small bands of horse warriors, surviving on the steppe off of hunting and cattle, and interacting with new and interesting people, the Cossacks were probably similar as well with their expansion into Siberia

I've always been interested in the bronze age, but it's such a remote period in human history that we know very little of the bronze age peoples that inhabited Europe aside from what they left buried in the earth. Dan's thorough presentation of the archeological record, beautiful illustrations, and his talent as an author bring these people and their societies to life in a way that I've never experienced!   50. There's a Cucuteni festival in Iasi - Romania, where craftsmen come and bring traditional Romanian potery, clothing etc, and it's really striking how similar the decorative styles are to those of the people from the Bronze age.
