  1. Yay! Moses Mendelssohn coming up. I am looking forward to this. The Napoleonic era will be probably interesting too as it implemented emancipation in many places (a little at least). An ancestor of mine, Joseph Naumann (Cohn), apparently became an officer in the Prussian army during the German Wars of Liberation of 1813. He had to drop "Cohn" as a last name in exchange for promotion to lieutenant; at least if I believe what his greatgrandson wrote down in 1919. Anyway, I am intrigued that the Polish Army had Jewish officers 20 years earlier (even so in a very different way and of course the world of 1793 was very different from the world of 1813).

  2. In 1916 My grandparents came from a shtetl in the Polish/Russian border region. They knew each other from home, came separately and married in Chicago. My grandmother was the most beautiful girl in the shtetl and my grandfather loved her from afar, but won her heart in the new country and gave her a good life. My grandfather had 12 brothers, he and five of them escaped to the States, Palestine and Argentina. So I and my many cousins are here today and in Israel. But 7 of the brothers did not leave, and their wives and children, 40 people in all died at Auschwitz. Thank you for your sharing your research, the story of your family and this part of Jewish history.

  16. Do a video on the history of Ashkenazi, Sephardic, Mizarahi Jewry. Could you also do an analysis on the Torah, and how it became what it is now. Of course tradition says Moses wrote it, but secular sources say it was compiled way later. Maybe also do something on the evolution of modern Hebrew , and how it compares to Biblical Hebrew.

  27. The last line sounds about right. Historians who subtract what Jews call "the Hardrianic persecution" from the equation consider him to be a superb emperor. It irks me that any historian does that, and I end up concluding that those who do are at least a bit anti-Semitic. But I am sure there is more to the story and cannot wait to here it. And yes, I never heard of the Kitos War. (FYI, it's SDelMonte here. My Google accounts are under my real name.)

  34. Fantastic video, amazing job as usual. One small thing: at 16:21 you show Palestine, Mi as being in the upper peninsula. While there is a place in Michigan called Palestine there, that was not the Am Olam settlement. The Am Olam settlement was in the Bay city (ish) area closer to the thumb in the Lower peninsula. Only noticed it myself when I was trying to figure out if there really were Jewish agriculturalists in the UP. Sadly, just Bay city 😖

  39. There of course remains a big split about the concept of a messiah within Orthodox Judaism. We all believe he will come as per Maimonides, but is he a mystic figure a la Shabtei Tzvi? Or a political figure? You could argue that Bibi had a better claim on the title than the Lubavitcher Rebbe, but even people who call him King Bibi aren’t saying that while thousands of Hasidim still think a man dead twenty years is messiah.

  40. One more thing came to my mind as I was rewatching the video, regarding both the minorities of the PLC serving in the cavalry and the tragic battle of Praga. Alongside the Beardlings, among the defenders of Praga, were the remnants of all six of the Lithuanian Vanguard Regiments (Pułki Straży Przedniej Wielkiego Księstwa Litewskiego). The majority of their soldiers were the Lipka Tatars. In some sadly poetic way I find it fitting for the last stand of the old Commonwealth. Also, a bit of context for the fact that Polish-Lithuanian officers (in cavalry especially) were almost exclusively nobles is that the nobility of the PLC was significantly more numerous than in other European countries.

  46. @20:51, your comments on the Jewish experiences of WWII reminded me of my Greek grandmother's two Jewish friends from before the war. One was in the Greek army when the Italians invaded and fought them until the Germans hit a weak point in the line and encircled the army. He then fought in the Greek resistance and after the war went on to fight in the Israeli war for independence. That was the last my grandmother heard of him. The other friend was was taken by the Germans. My grandmother never knew what happened to her, but feared the worst.
