I loved learning about people I knew little or nothing about (the Vilna Gaon, Daher Omar) but above all, I'm a huge unabashed fanboy of Tadeusz Kościuszko and I always have waited to hear about Berek Joselewicz on this channel. We actually might hear about him again (I hope). I don't want to spoil anything, but I'm pretty sure that the uniform Berek was depicted wearing in this video is a uniform of the Army of a certain Duchy that was created in 1807.   4. At 6:20 I literary exclaimed "Septuaginta!" Finally, there was something in this video that I knew about, aside from the basic framework of Califate's history. Seriously though, learning about the Exilarchy, origins of Karaites, ben Meir and Masoretic Text itself was absolutely fascinating. BTW, when I googled "Exilarchy" the first result was some Warhammer 40k stuff. I don't know should I find it hilarious but I kinda did.

  10. The hypothesis that Jesus was a pharisee actually goes all the way back to the 19th century religious scholar Abraham Geiger. Also, it's highly doubtful that Jesus was fluent in Greek. As for the idea that Jesus entertained the ideology of the zealots, there is about as much evidence against that as for it; and any evidence for it is better explained by Jesus being an apocalyptic prophet , after the fashion of Honi the Circle drawer or Hanina ben Dosa, rather than a zealot.

The discussion on the Austromarxists' relationship with Jews reminds me of their relationship with Slavic 'Völkerabfälle', a topic that I wrote my Bachelor thesis on, and one that touches on that discussion on the idea of dividing Europe between East and West. Beyond the educational aspect, all this affirms in my eyes, just as it had for Bauer, my attitude towards the Austromarxists. I’d just like to shout out a few other popular figures who had impacts on both Risorgimento and Jewish emancipation, such as Carlo Cattaneo, one of the leaders of the “five days of Milan” of 1848, who had made his university thesis on how restrictions on Jews were responsible for most of the prejudices aimed at them and their lack of integration, and Elia Benamozegh, Chief Rabbi of Livorno, Kabbalist, who corresponded with Mazzini. And peripheral to this, in Giuseppe Verdi’s Nabucco which as an allegory for Italy’s resurgence used Jewish exile in Babylon and Va Pensiero has been strongly considered as a national anthem.

  18. From a long-time Norwegian subscriber: Excellent video, and Skål, sam. A few notes however. I wish you would have touched a little bit more on the history of the jew clause in the Norwegian constitution, and the debate following it - culminating in the passage of the dissent er-act which officially legalised non Lutheran worship in the mid 19th century. One of the biggest proponents of the clause was Bishop Nicolai Wergeland, show later came to be one of it's biggest opponents, along with his son, Nicolai (who is considered Norways national poet). Secondly, though I absolutely understand why you may have to cut it out for brevity, and it may have been in a previous draft of the script - Quisling did not serve as minister of defense for the NS. He was a member of the farmers party at the time, and was forced to resign after he ordered the military to open fire on striking workers at a match factory. He only subsequently founded the party.

An off topic comment, I'll try my best because I'm not a physicist: Einstein wasn't against the quantum physics principles, only against a particular kind of interpretation of it. Even more, his Nobel prize was awarded not because of his theory of Relativity, but because he proved true the quantum nature of the photoelectric effect.

This was the doing of Charles Bradlaugh, an atheist who was repeatedly elected to parliament, rejected, fined and even locked up under Big Ben for speaking and voting there until he was allowed to "affirm" rather than take a religious oath. After that, Hindu, Parsi and Muslim MP were able to take their seats without obstruction. By the way, the requirement for university students to assent to the tenets of the Church of England applied to Oxford and Cambridge, not the University of London or of course the Scottish Universities, which many boys from England attended.

Forgive my ignorance and I apologize if this question sounds stupid but why was it that more than a third of Jews stuck around Europe when they could have migrated to other areas outside of Christian control where they would have been much more tolerated? Was there something about Europe (besides being home) that justified the risk of living in such a hostile and volatile environment? Was migration difficult back then? Fantastic episode btw!

  28. I have been learning so much from you channel. Especially the 19th - 20th century. I grew up in Israel, was educated there in the 70s', and most of this episode is completely new to me. I guess Israeli education - when it comes to modern Israeli history was just never that good. Although small world story- my high school, The religious girls school - Evelina De Rothschild in Jerusalem was a polling station, I'm not sure why it wasn't a national holiday, but Golda Meir came and voted, and said hello to us. She was very small and unimpressive looking. This was after the Yom Kippur war - so I'm sure the weight of the world really had its affect on her.

Modern Hebrew has three striking parallels to Arabic dialects - use of a present participle for present tense instead of the imperfect, analytic genitive instead of a construct phrase, and SVO word order. By contrast, Biblical Hebrew and Classical Arabic use the imperfect for the present tense, the construct phrase for possession, and a VSO word order. My belief is that both Modern Hebrew and the Arabic dialects were influenced by Aramaic. In the case of Modern Hebrew, the Aramaic influence probably came through Rabbinic Hebrew, which served as an unconscious grammatical model for the new language, given that a traditional Jewish education required literacy in Rabbinic Hebrew through the Gemorah. In the case of Arabic, my feeling is that Arabic dialects probably evolved from former Aramaic-speaking people adapting to the new language.

  38. 20:42 I think that in the post-Emancipation era, the words "Jew" and "Jewess" were being used as slurs in European languages so frequently that other euphemisms were preferred for organizations and periodicals. So for instance in Scandinavia, Jewish congregations tended to refer to themselves as "Mosaic" (in reference to Moses). The idea was to avoid unwanted attention by sticking out like a sore thumb. In my country, Denmark, the Jewish experience was generally unproblematic following Emancipation in 1849, but nonetheless, there was always a sense of trepidation that things could change for the worse overnight.

He was always a somewhat eccentric man, including (IIRC) founding his own occult religion (a sort of weird Spiritist/Thelema hybrid) before arriving at a new identity as a Jew. His search for roots even led him to reconstruct an etymology for his surname, 'Barros', out of 'Bar-Rosh'. Despite not being recognised as Jewish by several members of the community in Portugal even after his conversion, he threw himself into the project of bringing these cryptojewish communities back to Judaism. He was definitely what we would recognise today as a "seeker", constructing his identity as he went through life. Given his lifelong search for meaning (again, spanning various religions and practices) and his tireless canvassing for funds to visit these communities, an essay in the 'History of Religion in Portugal' (alas, only available in Portuguese) describes him as a "unique example of a religious entrepreneur in the Portuguese context". As a final aside, Salazar's official role in government was as Chief Minister / Prime Minister (Presidente do Conselho de Ministros), the head of the executive; the President of Portugal (then as now) has a largely ceremonial role.
