Erm, born and bred Londoner here, I disagree with part of your comment. Thereās barely any real Londoners left as most have fled the city now. Most people in London today were not born there. Most white people left in London are Eastern European or from somewhere else other than London.
I actually just fled myself, moved to Scotland last week for the cheaper housing and friendlier people. No regrets. And Iām hearing English accents all the time around me, so Iām not the only southerner who fled up here. Scotland is amazing and I love it. Iām sad that my presence here is part of a gentrification thatās no doubt going to happen here but where else can I go? I only speak English so I donāt want to move abroad, or how will I find work? Iām a working class person, I donāt have a flashy remote work job to take with me somewhere else. I feel like a refugee now! š
Also I can confirm, London wages for working class people are the same as rest of UK, only youāll waste 75% of it on rent in London . Bar staff earn about Ā£12 p/h in London and rest of UK. My last office job was Ā£28k, so where is this Ā£50k average coming from? In 41 years in London I donāt know anyone earning over Ā£35k other than the managers. London is a third world country now. Quality of life is way better outside London, I earn slightly less now but actually will have more disposable income anyway because Iām not paying London rents, which is where the slight difference in wages would disappear anyway.
Average rent in my part of Scotland is Ā£500 for a one bed flat! Canāt even get a box room in a HMO for that in London! Average one bed flat in London is probably around Ā£1300 now (no idea as I lived on a canal boat for last seven years to try save money).

I'm 56, born here and lived here all my life... I have only recently in the last two years just started to travel regularly abroad, enjoying the Canaries. It is such a contrast in culture, costs. lifestyle. I would love to leave and move there, but I'd be unable to work. My only option is to retire there cheaply but I'd be on my own. The lesson, is to make the best of what you have. Find a new home, a village or close community of people, get an allotment, grow food, be self sustaining. A good life is possible, and I think Pete you are right to explore options before you decide to move. You are not being negative, you are right, it's such a shame... however. don't jump from the frying pan into the fire.. the grass isn't always greener on the other side... Good luck.
