If you drive the near west side of Akron along Merriman Road, Portage Path and the connecting streets, you can see the enormous wealth that was generated when Akron was an industrial powerhouse during during the early to mid 20th century. Some of the most stately homes in America, and old monied families are still there. It is a city of extreme income inequality.

  10. When I was a kid, I heard about “depressed areas” that would come once steel left the region. A few years ago, driving though the Beaver Valley of Western, PA, I became depressed at all the changes. For the first time, I realized…THIS is why they call it a depressed area!

  13. Thanks for posting this one! We lived in Pittsburgh when John and Giselle Fetterman were starting their efforts to make Braddock better for the people of the town before he was mayor. Politics aside, I will always remember Giselle helping the town with the local “free store”. We would stop by and donate whatever we didn’t need anymore. Again, not focusing on politics, they did a lot of great things for people that needed support and not useless verbal promises. 👍

  18. I love this channel. I have so many thoughts during each tour. The question was asked, “Would I move here?” That only makes me think of those folks who have no other choice than to stay there. My heart hurts for those folks. They, along with the houses, have been forgotten. ❤️

  23. Great ride through. Thanks for the stats. I stopped the video in the beginning to read the sign on that first building. It's a historical landmark and it gives you the backstory of that building and what it was used for. Pretty cool. It's sad to see the city in the condition it's in. The murder rate per capita is actually the 2nd highest in the country. I'd love to see a city like this completely revived again. It has some great old buildings, both homes and businesses.   40. This is so ironical. We have california exodus and miami homes are now unaffordable. Whereas we got areas like this along the rust belt... So sad. Seems like time and nature just reclaimed everything. Hopefully manufacturing industries will once again thrive... but actually it won't.

  41. Sharon does look bad economically but it still has some industry left. The late Jim Winners put allot of investment in sharon till he passed about 10 years ago. Sharon steel, Winner electronic, the winner department store... Jim real believed investing into Sharon

Many people won't understand this statement, but a lot of these videos make me think of Nicholas Kristof and the journalism he has done together with his beautiful wife Sheryl WuDunn.
