  17. The spinning welder that is forming the cage in this video - I always thought that same process would be perfect for lining the tunnels from a tunnel boring machine. Just after the cutter head, a spinning welder can push and weld steel wire into and around the rock wall to form a dense cage that runs the length of the tunnel. This would protect from falling rocks if the celling of the tunnel isn't completely solid. From there the machine can install the usual concrete slabs to line the tunnel walls over the cage, then inject liquid concrete. The cage then works as steel reinforcement for the injected concrete that is curing behind the slabs.
