Blood for the blood god

I grew up playing the Final Fantasy games, so I recognize 'Masamune' instantly, but never knew it was based on a real sword or sword-maker :)
57
I like the little touch of the RGG Soundtrack playing through the video

I think the answer is mystery is really simple. If Tokugawa knew what he had at the time, then he surely did not turn it in with the others and the historical documents are wrong. Or like so many other pieces of art that are considered national treasures and extremely valuable, I am sure by that time a copy was made, and that is the one that was turned in with his others. The original is still out there somewhere safely hidden, possibly lost to time. But definitely still exists.

It's good that Nishimura Mako got a positive life in her post-underworld life but I am genuinely curious, has she gotten some assisination attempts on her life or just general assaults/harassment from her former life when she tried to run her own drug business? Or anytime after?

Have a couple of yakuza friends who were introduced to me by my Japanese friend when I travelled in Japan in 2003. One is now retired and lives in California as a tattoo artist.
51
Thank you for this. As a victim of the US public school system, I barely know accurate US history, let alone that of other nations. You cover a broad timeline of complex historical information in a manner that is entertaining and doesn't seem burdensome. As my introduction to most Japanese culture was through J-horror and Yakuza movies (lots of Takeshi Kitano and Takashi Miike), I really enjoy your channel. Good work.
51
If a Yakuza shot someone from Sega would it be considered blast processing?
48
It's criminal how underrated this channel is. Production and research quality is top notch. It's definitely the type of channel that will grow much much more in a few years. Keep up the good work!🔥
48
Samurai Champloo has come to my mind.
47
Most comprehensive English language telling of the Rikidoshan story I've seen. Great job.
47
I also heard of another story where sega offices got raided by Yakuza who started trashing master copies of master system and genesis games. Which is often cited as the reason why rereleases and remasters are always the same 15 or so titles instead of Sega's full IP list. The Masters simply don't exist as they were destroyed in that raid.
46
Shimano irl doesn't exist, he's not real- Shimano irl:
46
It would be crazy if this video actually made some american actually check grandma's basement and find it just laying there, forgotten.
45
Ichiban: "AROHAAA"
43
I'd like to see more about the heian period, it always feels overlooked in samurai history videos
42
Imagining this Weapon of Power lying around some Basement-Trolls cave makes me feel uneasy tbh xD
42
This is so insightful and so beautifully made. Body art is such a cool thing.
41
I think it's not out of th realm of possibility a Women may again rise to such power.
40
I was literally just watching your video about the Sukeban and Bansho like five minutes ago and saw a comment requesting you to make this.
40
While far from a proof, I think that being a "black Company" speaks against strong ties with the Yakuza. OC usually tries to keep their front businesses with a nice facade and good reputation, simply to avoid unwanted attention.
40
I'm surprised you didn't touch on the rumors of Yokoi Gunpei's death potentially being linked to Yakuza after he left Nintendo and worked on the Wonderswan at Bandai

Japan has definitely had an insane metamorphosis over the past 600 years.
38
Happy holidays ANIKI, still loving your videos man. Keep it up! You are doing awesome.
37
My God man you've done it!For some reason there are pretty much no videos regarding Irezume/Tebori aka "Japanese tattoo"that go as in depth and discuss the true origins of this amazing art form..l have been waiting for this one for ever! You just made my week!As well I would ,without a second thought get tattooed this way as l have been a professional tattoo artist for 26yrs ad well as a huge admirer of this amazing style .l've many times tried my hand at creating traditional Japanese tattoo designs on both paper and skin... although l also remember that l am not from Japan so l always have tried my best not to appropriate or disgrace the art form...
37
While this is a very cool and interesting video, I think there's a tendency to buy into the gangster mentality of power struggles and community involvement. These are thugs though, let's not forget that when there's this talk of how extortion is a competitive industry, for example, as a footnote in their journey, we're really talking about attempts to ruin people's lives. They may dress sharply for status, they may be polite to average people to avoid stirring up negative public sentiment, and they may have this narrative of being some kind of honourable warriors, but the reason that that narrative is so important to them is because they actually have no honour. They're predators looking to prey on the weak, nothing more.

This is why you respond to texts

TELL US ABOUT RIKIDOUZAN PLEASE SENPAI!!!!!!!!!!!!
36
great video man, i was also wondering if the bansho/sukeban gangs have unique and nuanced encounters with bosozoku gangs? since all of these forms of gangs and their subcultures are very similar but distinct at the same time, it could be interesting....
36
Given how important it was for the history of the Yakuza and Japan in general, it could be interesting to make a deep dive into the bubble economie of the late 1980s.
36
Fantastically put together video and very well sourced, actually made me go and do my own research into the Dark Ocean Society after watching this and I honestly think you've done a superb job of presenting all the key points about them here, please keep up the great work, we are all loving your content
34
Speaking of crime, it is absolutely criminal that this channel isn't WAY more popular. Great content that's well made like this deserves to be seen more.

5:50 As someone who studies Japanese and has a decent knowledge of Kanji, this entire section just seems like completely conspiracy theory levels of silliness. 天 isn't just used in tengu 天狗, It's also used in 天気 Tenki for weather or 天才 Tensai for genius. You could've picked either of those or many more of the other words that use that kanji to come to a conclusion but oddly chose Tengu? As for 鼻 nose and 花 Flower, based on where you place intonation the words are actually completely different which is contrary to what you stated at 6:30. THis quick video demonstrates that (https://youtu.be/_ST6PQPa99c) Also, Hana はな is also a female name such as the late pro wrestler, Hana Kimura (木村花). Kanji actually isn't that complex and once you learn Japanese, it makes a lot of sense. I think maybe consulting with Japanese speakers before making videos like this woud help. 8:40 Did Nintendo founder yamochi possibly show appreciation to his main customer base with his company's name there is certainly some sort of connection... Possibly? Is this a factual video or mere theory with no evidence?
32
Maybe it's due to the bad video quality, but their wrestling looked more convincing than WWE since the 2000s...
31
Interesting ..doesn't surprise me though ... never mind Japans consumers ....think of how big it was in the West when Nintendo and Mario Bros came out in the 80's. Almost every kid had one or a old school folding hand held. I was obsessed with those hand helds. Like the really nice heavy ones with the gold covered tops and bottoms that had a scrolling screen. Remember the sky blue Mario hand held that had a full Mario game that scrolled sideways and the game would switch up for different levels? Pretty cool for it's time and pricey for what it was. Asian girls in my elementary school would bring them back from Hong Kong.

Yakuza: Hand over the Super Nintendos Nintendo: Get in line like everyone else
30
I hear you, Okami soundtrack!
30
There's no surprise of any yakuza involvement in anything based in Japan. They are involved in anything that generates revenue. They're business men. They run Japan from the street level.
29
I noticed that, in Japanese pop culture, there are a lot of stories featuring puppet rulers being controlled by the military. While in the west, we tend to have a lot of stories about absolute monarchs. It makes sense that this idea would be ingrained into Japanese culture considering the Emperor has been a figurehead for the majority of the last thousand years.
29
Thank you SO much for an early holiday gift, I love delinquent manga/anime so much so this is right up my alley ^_^
29
In response to the end of the video, I think Vanillaware's Muramasa game is quite underrated.
28
Chrono trigger background music, takes me right back

Fun (?) fact: Nick's ancestral home, Calabria, has just as rich a history of crime as Sicily. The Calabrian Mafia, called 'Ndrangheta, is hundreds of years old and has a reminiscent but different structure to the Sicilian Cosa Nostra. Built strictly on blood ties, the infiltration and study of the organization have proven difficult. Furthermore, unlike the Cosa Nostra, they've made maximum effort to stay out of the limelight and avoid public conflict with the law. As a result, they've displaced the Cosa Nostra as Italy's strongest criminal organization despite remaining largely unknown outside of Calabria. Estimates show that the organization accounts for at least 3% of Italy's ENTIRE GDP.

Bro you deserve about 10 million more views, keep making amazing content!
27
this channel deserves a million subs for the quality and rarity of its content. come on guys, lets make this channel feasible for Aniki for the long haul.
26
I finish every ANIKI video and think "damn, that's some good content" because damn, you make some GOOD content. Very grateful for your work
26
My favorite reference is in the game ninja gaiden. He wields a muramasa blade, and muramasa is the swordsmith

How about a video on the Japanese Chicano subculture?
