  7. It always made me sad that the RB26 wasn't 3 litres to directly compete with the supra. While I enjoy both platforms, only one has countless JGTC wins, and in Australia.? I saw you mentioned the N54! That's my engine! While you are right about the N54, the biggest perk of this engine is buying a $60 dongle, $60 tuning map and achieving 420ish horsepower with no other mods. If you add better coils, intake and catless downpipes/exhaust, you can get up to 450-480hp. If you add turbos and fuel pump, you can hit 700-800 rwhp.

  9. if you built the lower end of the engine much smaller since there is only 1 rod bearing journal to support and enclose with the engine block your saving a lot of weight from not having a full crankshaft and not having a full engines length of supporting metal on the engine block compared to a typical engine with four rod bearing journals. so honeslty this engine should be quite a bit lighter for its given power output similar to a rotory engine while still functioning mostly the same as a normal reciprocating piston engine. so in an application like aircraft where the weight of the engine might matter more than the absolute power of the engine this might be advantageous. and if a highly developed version of this engine did indeed have identical power to an equivelent engine with a normal crankshaft then this is superior due to lower weight.

  12. In the UK there was an odd, but fairly successful, little car called theTrojan. Very plain, simple and economical it was powered by a four cylinder double, split single of 1500cc. Probably the strangest features of this engine were piston rods designed to bend (a little) and a remotely located carburettor some distance from the engine. No passing oddity, Trojan employed this engine from the early 1920's to the early 50's, latterly in (very slow) light vans and also developed a triple, split single.

  21. What an excellent explanation! Showing all the different models of this idea felt like an adventure! I love the simple conclusions at the end. The friction and complexity remind me of the opposite type of engine used the Sachsenring Trabant 601. Boy I want to see that animated so bad.

  24. Dear Repairman 22 you might like to do a show on the "Rotary Radial" aircraft engine which was widely used in WW-1. It's the only engine I know of where the crankshaft was bolted to the firewall and the engine rotated around around the crankshaft. It was a 2 stroke engine with the propeller bolted to the crankcase. Sooooo... the engine spun at the same speed as the prop. The Rotary Radial was used by the French, British, and German air force.

  25. Not going to mention anything about Snowmobiles using engines that run backwards to shift in to reverse? This has been how Ski-Doo does reverse with a system called RER that has been available since 1998 on some models and on all models since around 2002 or so. You press and hold a button and the engine stops for just a quarter second or so, then kicks backwards. The computer then emits an audible BEEP to let you know you are in reverse. Like a semi backing up. Somehow this does not require an electric start. Not clear on how that works. But since it is a pull start, it can only start in one direction normally and you use the RER to stop the rotation and spin it backwards.

  28. Freevalve has been on the market for a long time, yet its not implemented in any affordable non-sportscar. If youre trying to say Freevalve makes the Poppet Valve obsolete youre wrong. If you say that electric motors make the concept of the internal combustion engine obsolete youre pretty much right, at least for passenger cars

  30. Two strokes power the worlds cargo ships and will for much much longer, altho its not via crankcase scavanging. Marine Diesel Two Stroke engines are the most efficient, reliable and long-living, hence why they are so widely used in shipping

  31. Never owned a Bug but my little light aircraft has a 1965 vintage 1200cc (modified to 1400cc) VW Beetle engine up front. It's super simple and, as you said, a bullet proof machine.

The Corolla is not the biggest Seller, it is the Original Air Cooled Beetle.........It had a Flat 4 Cylinder Engine in the Rear , driving the Rear Wheels through a 4 Speed Gearbox, that Never changed.......The Corolla on the Other hand started as a 1000cc Engine in the Front driving the Rear Wheels through a 4 Speed Manual Gearbox, It Now has a 2000cc Engine , Transverse Mounted Driving the Front wheels and it is now on Well over about its 10th Body Series, and shares ABSOLUTELY NO Parts or Identity from its Original..........Sorry .......Just the badge............Try again TOYOTA.

Those old motors, Model T Flathead 4's, were great for the time, but in comparing to a modern 4 cylinder engine, the old T produced no where near the power, they were no where near as efficient, and they did not go 250,00 miles like many modern engines do. Not a fair comparison. Ever sat behind an old flivver and got to enjoy the exhaust smell? Modern engines are truly amazing.

They also had indepentant rear suspension with half shaft axels , combined with rear engine over axel the Beetle was a great vehicle to make into a dune buggy and in 60s and 70s were everywhere. Now you pay 20 grand for a UTV that the VW bug could almost do the same thing for several hundred dollars for a used one to convert and personalize
