  1. It's not about the trajectory of the cylinder, but more about controlled trajectory. In a conventional combustion engine, the only way to control the piston's movement to lock into a vertical one is to make it 's radius keep constant contact with the cylinder, resulting in "parasitic" friction due to the force and movement vectors not being colinear. This engine locks the trajectory of the piston by adding a new "contact" point, thus theoretically making the piston and cylinder friction free, especially on the explosion stroke, although possible that this makes less friction with the cylinder, I assure you it makes a new friction point in the piston pin, so the only way to truly know if any benefits at all cole it to thoroughly test it.

  2. hey, have you seen that engine sound simulation software that your fellow peer AngeTheGreat made? if not, you can program some pretty accurate sounding engines with visuals too. for some of the more obscure engines out there, this could be a great tool for your use case here. it's just kinda tricky to learn the program.

  3. You should mention the VW in competition, i.e., the Formula V, open wheel, single seat road racer, one of the longest running classes in racing history, alongside Formula Ford. VW's were prime targets for modifying as well. I installed a 1600cc Porsche normal engine in one, back in 1966. A year later, I created the 'ultimate VW performer,' when I replaced that pushrod engine with a 1500cc, four-cam engine out of a 550 Spyder. When completed, I tested it to 7000 rpm in fourth gear, without question..., the scariest thing I've ever done on four wheels!

Neat video on a whole, but I have to give massive applause at the end where the number of units sold is compared to the population of the time -- that's rarely done these days, making newer and newer things, be it video game systems, cars, guns, whatever, seem more popular than they really are simply because more people exist to obtain the product -- penetration percentage of the population of the time is often the more accurate metric to go by, as opposed to raw numbers, and this is one of the few times I've ever seen that mentioned in anything talking about overall sales rates of anything between the past and today. Bravo.

  5. The threads for the spark plugs in the cylinder heads where badly constructed, they very often broke and with a huge bang, the spark plug was shot out. I had this and there where ready made kits to repair this, when it happened because it was so frequent. In the first stage, there was a bigger thread cut into the hole and a spiral like thing was put in to hold the spark. When this was also blown out, what often happened, the hole was bored out even bigger and a repair kit was glued in. This was good enough to fix it permanently most times.

  11. Not entirely true. From 1909 thru 13 and 26 & 27, several colors were available. Henry chose to make all cars black because it dried fastest, allowing faster production.

  14. As someone who worked on cars and maintained my own vehicles, I hated that engine. Getting the rear spark plug out was an absolute pain in the neck. Crankcase leaks where a major problem with that engine too. They may have been okay for Europe with their aircooling but in a hot country in Africa they didn't fare too well. My uncle in Namibia told me when he drove his Beetle hard, he often could hear the oil boiling in the sump upon stopping. With that big fan dragging, they were hardly fuel efficient and frikken noisy. I learnt to drive on my dad's Beetle and hated the driving position. As soon as I could afford a car I bought a Renault R8 and it was in all ways a superior car with a superior engine in every way. A dream to work on, the Beetle was a nightmare.

  17. "IN THOSE DAYS" that was fast. It was the fastest thing that Sears sold. The little Sears Compact was actually a close second. The 2 speed Allstate MoPeds were a hoot & used on many, many paper routes. The gas cap was also an inverted cup for measuring 2-stroke oil at fill ups. (A Yamaha FZ-6 IS fast by today's standards)

The cam arm moves the crown piston under exhaust and intake - the easiest of the 4 strokes and so the lightest loading .. really interesting idea .. by changing the timing of the “hop” (the cam timing on the crown piston lifter arm) it would be easy to short stroke the intake (create an Atkinson cycle for better fuel economy) .. hoping development pans out !!

  22. No. With a gap of .10 mm there is no way to reach any compression to speak of, and definately not 14 bar. It would just fissel out between the rotors. I used to work with very small tolerances, like .001mm, in hydraulics, and that is what it takes to work with oil under pressure, this is air... Looks fancy in a rendering, but no chance in the real world!

  24. My father bought a new Sears / Puch 250 in 1968 (but it was actually a 1967 model). Looked just like the one in the video. I ‘inherited’ it when I turned 16 (1971). Sold it to a neighbor kid when I got a newer bigger bike. He wrecked it and I talked him into giving it back to me. Frame is long gone but I still have the engine. Great memories! Thanks for sharing this interesting design.

  31. I love to see different engineering. And this is something I have never seen before. I can not say that if I was going to design an engine. That I would use it. I would use either a dry Kevlar belt, or a wet chain. both of them have proven to be quite reliable.

  35. 2:16 The increased ratio of internal surface area to cylinder volume is NOT an advantage for engine cooling or efficiency. Two smaller cylinders will always have more internal surface area than a single, larger-bore cylinder of the same displacement, but the larger surface area needlessly absorbs more of the combustion heat. That reduces thermodynamic efficiency (you want the expanding gases to keep their heat and remain hot) and it creates a larger cooling problem to be addressed by the cooling system. In the case of an air-cooled engine, it would basically necessitate more and/or larger cooling fins on the exterior of the engine.

  37. Triumph made one of this. I still have the engine someplace in the attic. Probably the worst 2-stroke I've seen. The flame front has to propagate very far to reach the other cylinder. The piston of the other cylinder (away from spark plug) got severely destroyed by the detonation.

  42. Doubling the combustion cycle of a 4 stroke and this yields 20% gains? Yeah, that sounds pretty bad. Because it looks to me like 80% of the theoretical gains from adding another power stroke have evaporated into nothing. 100% more combustion which yields only 20% power gains IS TERRIBLE.

Since modern engines run fairly reliably without significant cylinder wear to around 260,000 miles (426000 kilometers) before needing a cylinder bore rebuild, NO auto manufacturer would EVER care about producing such an engine since factory warranties only extend from between 50-100,000 miles (80-161000 kilometers). And NO auto manufacturer is going to want to extend their warranties, period. So, there will never be any interest in such a design by an auto manufacturer.
