Where is the horse and the rider? Where is the giver of gold? Where are the seats of the feast? Where are the joys of the hall? Alas the gleaming cup! Alas the armoured warrior! Alas the glory of princes! How the time has passed away, slipped into the helm of night as if it had never been. All is hardship in the earthly kingdom, Wyrd moves the world under the heavens. Here, wealth is fleeting, friends are fleeting, man is fleeting, kinsmen are fleeting. And the earth's hall empties. The Wanderer, anon. ~700AD

A personal HERO! Penda lives! England could use a Penda right now!

They really should make a military comedy out of this debacle, Id watch it.

Very moving video. Just shows you don't have to be an officer to win the VC as often seems the case. Thank you for telling Wassells story.
19
Another excellent telling of a story that should be better remembered.
16
Penda "the Strong", king of Mercia is my 43rd great uncle.
15
Thank you Chris, another fabulous history post.
14
This time in british history is the most interesting to me
13
I enjoyed that greatly. Thank you!

He was a man of his honor and a living proof that a hero comes from unknown places.

I feel like calling it the last invasion is like calling WW1 the war to end all wars. I propose we dont call it the last invasion we call it the most recent.
9
What a fantastic and entertaining story, thank you for presenting it. Btw, Jemima Nicholas's Β£50 per year pension for life was not too shabby in 1797 as it would have the value today of a little over Β£8,000 per year. By the images of her, perhaps Hattie Jaques could have played her if a "Carry On" film had been made about this.
9
Thank you Chris more knowledge i can soak up like a sponge β€ watching this whilst having a cheeky beer .

I had read of revolutionary Wolfe Tone's attempted invasion of Ireland using French troops in 1799 (?), but I did not know that the French had achieved landfall on the isle of Great Britain.

Great video, and amazing story perfectly narrated well done. All the best!!

OMG! Looking at the detail on one of your maps, I see Narberth, Haverfordwest, and St Davids. Being from Philadelphia's old Main Line, I recognize the eastern terminus (Narberth), the town where I went to school (Haverford (no west)), and the town next to Rosemont (St Davids). We all knew the area had prominent Welsh settlement in the 19th Century (Bryn Mawr, born and raised), but never knew it had a history.

To all those who served to preserve the freedom of Europe, Thank you for Your service. It must break your hearts to see current events unfolding.
6
That Welsh woman knew that the French didn't like it up em

Actually there was one more invasion of Britain, in the 1940s. Seems a large army of Americans came over and marched all over the place.
6
I have just got an original print of them in the River during the rescue but Thank-you for this information which I will put on the back. Thankyou

tyvm for another upload, Chris π¨π¦π

Being born and raised in Eastern KY, this is as much my history as it is any Britβs. And it has ever fascinated me. I must get to Britain before Iβm too old and see where my ancestors came from. New subscriber. I donβt see how Iβve missed this channel but I did. Until now.
5
Chris if you release a video about the American revolution in the future do a video on John Paul Jones raids on Britain shores like on white haven town.
5
I am envisioning this as a Monty Python production.
5
I can't see on g maps where they could have landed at that point. Looks impossible
5
Oh, I forgot. I'll donate as soon as I get my VA check.

What a great plot for a comedy movie, glad to know that portuguese wine played a role in thwarting that invasion, great video sir, thanks for sharing.

I live close to the site of a Pictish fort that was the seat of King Brude, apparently the last Pagan Pictish King. The whole region is littered with standing stones and cairns. Sadly in many parts of Scotland much of the pagan religious sites have been built over by the Christians. History written by the victors indeed.
4
Growing up in Wales, we still make women like Jemima. My mum for a start.
4
I had never heard of this invasion until today. The whole mess sounds like an episode of Black Adder. Thanks for educating me and giving me a good laugh!
4
I have a cat I named Penda
4
I can just hear the music and words of Gilbert & Sullivan.
4
What about any British Monarchs. Have any of them been assassinate?
4
Jemima R.I.P.
3
Regarding the stunning & brave Jemima: Here in America, we named a maple syrup in honor of this sweet lady.
3
An intriguing and well researched piece of history
3
glad to hear this story , i feel he`s a kinsman
3
Thank you for covering this invasion π

Cracking story. π . As usual, Well presented ππ

Modern day Pinvin (village in Worcestershire) is apparently derived from Penda's Fen. Nearby, there is a hamlet named Pensham which sounds highly likely to have been derived from Penda's Ham (and sounds vaguely Saxon too), but there is apparently no suggestion that Pensham has any connection with Penda, nor indeed is derived from Penda's Ham. To me though, it seems a more likely derivation than Pinvin. It also sits on a horseshoe bend in the River Avon, a favoured defensive location (similar to Evesham) in ancient times.

Excellent post, thank you.
3
I never heard of this.. Ty
3
Chris can you do a video about Hartlepool and the monkey please
3
Not much of an Army and not much of an invasion. I sailed into Cherbourg on a Christmas booze run. Does that count?
3
Pendas Fields and roads are named after him near whimpering east Leeds

I would love a historically accurate (as possible) series on these times. No extra drama or story lines, only verifiable facts and time appropriate costuming. In the correct language would be amazing, but that may be asking too much. Someone with money, please make it! We live in the future, and all I want to see is the past.
3
Excellent video, very good to see these examples.
