I live here in pembrokeshire and there's a church nearby where they lauded called St Gwyndaffs (a Breton saint), a very historic church where Asser did his early learning and Gerald of Wales preached, the French broke into the church and ripped pages from the bible, the bible is still on show in a glass case

  24. 1) A lot of this was covered in The World at War documentary series. Supposedly the Japanese bicycle infantry would ride on the rims after their tires went flat, and the sound of bare metal on cobblestone roads sounded like tanks to the green British/Indian/Australian soldiers. I've often wondered how differently the battle would have gone if the British/Indians/Australians had more anti-tank weapons (like the American Bazooka or the British PIAT). 2) Perhaps Yamashita was wise to attack with a smaller force, since his supplies were so limited. Had the British/Indian/Australian bothered to fortify the Malayan Peninsula and/or Singapore itself and delayed the Japanese advance the entire Japanese offensive may have failed due a shortage of food, fuel and ammunition (even with the smaller force).

  32. The Zulus didn’t want war, from what I’ve gathered. But, then again, why let ONE man go? It’s been 150 years (give or take). Cetshwayo could have been convinced that sparing a life COULD have played to his advantage, but that seems doubtful. It may have been a bizarre misunderstanding.

  48. NEVER divide your forces when proceeding against an unknown enemy. That's a popular maxim - but personally, I reckon you deserve all you get if you so much as think about proceeding against an enemy you haven't reconnoitred. Lord Chelmsford was out of his depth, assured as most of his era thought - in the superiority of race and class. NEVER underestimate your enemy. V.C.'s always have a humanitarian element to the heroics - I've not real experience of such stuff but have a feeling that many have been awarded to lay claim to some good coming out of an unmitigated disaster. Allowing themselves to be attacked at Isandlwana was bad enough but then to dissemble into the shambles it became was unforgivable. Some highly questionable comments appearing here - I'm of the firm belief that Britain became Great because it's the furthest place you can go west without City & Guilds heavy boat building - so all the clever go-getting sorts from further east ended up staying here.
