And you can not ignore big city like Stalingrad while advancing to Caucasus montain. The order itself was clear, From Voronezh move along the southern part of Volga river toward the Caucasus and Stalingrad and some other city are located between them. Also defending riverbank is easier than defending empty piece of land.

Outside the city is an open plain, even Manstein have trouble defending it. And the main advantage taking Stalingrad is to reduce their tank output by 30%, deny easy crossing across the river because Stalingrad have riverboat yard and put guns and machineguns on the riverbanks to destroy incoming transport. The Germans fail their objective because they dont have enough manpower since the begining. Not taking Stalingrad will leave them with exposed flank which will put them in worse position. Also its was Manstein who advise Paulus to stay when he ask permission to redeploy outside the city.

  10. As if the soviet will let it happen. It only need several hand grenades to turn Maikop into sea of flames. The same could happen to Baku and Astrakhan. If Germans skip Stalingrad what they will get in the end will be three burned out oil field a city that keep producing riffles, machine gun, T-34 and river boats. Which also can turn into their safe crossing point and their HQ and a long exposed north eastern flank. Also the area of operation is actually very narrow, between Volga River and Black Sea. A major encirclement can happen if you move too deep into the Caucasus with exposed flank.

Socialism only good if the other party managed to fix your failure and you have money to to afford it. Most countries where their socialism fails have no opposition party and no money. So it definitely wont work in poor with single political party countries. It will always work and never go away in wealthy, multi party countries.

China is one fine example, they are high IQ people, higher than white. but they live in society which conduct eugenic (one child policy, 10k execution per year). They never issue general conscription. Their lack of coordination happen because they still communicate with runners. Tactics are fine but they lack updated information about the enemy because like I said previously, they still communicate with runners. Im sure Manstein will also perform worse if he also communicate with runners. Both sides use horse drawn carriage and the soviet actually worse than Germans because supplies are delivered by NKVD. Their saving grace is lend lease truck supplied by USA to hide their fundamental problems.
