  5. ​ @zendao7967  This argument is smugly trotted out by westerners to feed their own egos, but it means little. People flock to wherever happens to be richer. Take Canada. Canadians have a much higher opinion of their own country than they do of the US, and yet net migration is considerably in favor of America. Why? Cos America pays more. The same plays out in Europe, as well as with emigration between places in other parts of the world too. Overall all it shows is which places have more money.

  8.  @belstar1128  Not all. Many islamic nations also have high fertility (for now at least), and some of those are rich due to fossil fuels. The fertility doesn't decline as much since they confine women to the home nevertheless (although it still does decline due to other factors that also affect it, most notably lower infant mortality).

Just looking at its post-WW2 history, here's a partial list of places that it has screwed over - Angola, Argentina, Afghanistan, Bolivia, Cambodia, Chad, Chile, Cuba, Dominican Republic, El Savador, Grenada, Gautemala, Honduras, Iran, Iraq, Laos, Nicaragua, Panama, Sudan, Vietnam, Yemen, etc. There's a reason a lot of the world outside Europe don't exactly adore the US. Hell that last one, Vietnam, killed far more people than the atomic bombs. 3 MILLION dead. Yet what does America tend to highlight more, and which drove it to leave (after nearly 20 years of war btw)? The 50k American deaths.

The events covered here happened during a time of crisis - after the crisis they looked to fix what was broken. Sure they're still authoritarian, but they aren't starving.

You can see the opposite choice in orthodox communities btw - regardless of wealth they still choose to have kids Change the circumstance and people still choose not have to have kids. Incentivise having kids via policy, and women are still not having them. Have them be rich already and they still choose not to have them. To date there's only one circumstance that leads them to make the opposite choice, which I mentioned in the previous para. There are even literally surveys that show this, where they were asked how many kids they'd have if money was not an issue. The answers were almost all 0, 1 or 2. Replacement rate is 2.1. And if you're wondering why the poor and the orthodox both tend to have more kids, there's a certain trait both groups tend to have in common - and it isn't how affordable their life is.

Most people already do this anyway, yet I don't see too many elderly being poisoned by their kids. For those who were shitty parents, the laws already have clauses to excuse children from having to support them. Indeed the laws don't change anything for most people, just the few who're trying to be shitty kids despite having had decent parents. Resorting to murder would just emphasize that shittiness.

  23. Wouldn't that cause issues with both power generation consistency and vulnerability to damage from violent winds? You don't have anything to boost and/or moderate the spinning, so generation should be a lot more erratic, and it'd all be more vulnerable in storms.

  25. Apparently empowering the USSR makes the world a less safe place, but America having power doesn't. The country that's been at war somewhere or the other for most of its history, with its last one ending just a little over a year ago, and the only nation to have ever used nuclear weapons on people. Yeah, real balanced perspective you got there. If anything, maintaining the balance between the USSR (and now China) and the US is what would prevent the kind of adventurism that both nations seem to have propensity for.

  26. There's already even smaller versions of this. Look up the Principality of Sealand for example. It's cute and all, but no one recognizes such gimmick 'nations'. Also life on an abandoned rig would be miserable, not cool, assuming you could even get by there without the regular shipments of stuff that they're normally reliant on. Even the Sealand folks don't actually live there, just lay claim to it.

  27. Not true. Money in the modern sense is typically said to have 4 functions - a medium of exchange, a unit of account, a store of value and a system of deferred payment. The Bolsheviks were essentially trying to reduce it down to just that second function, the unit of account, while abolishing its use for the other three functions. That's a much reduced concept of money.

In order to privatize it, the govt. essentially split it up, akin to the 'toxic assets' funds created in the US following the GFC, by taking on some of its debt and land to be slowly paid off over time by the state, while the rest along with the airline was sold to the Tata Group. This is basically splitting the problem up, in order to make it more attractive to private investors. That's why I said you should do this after the immediate crisis is sorted out.

They've also played favorites with India's enemies (Pakistan) when it suited them. With that kind of history, India is never going to trust the west with its future, nor should it. It charts its own path. The west can be part of that if they wish, but it'll never let them assume a dominant position.

  35.  @dallysinghson5569  No. This holds even in cities as well as in places with state provided mandatory schooling. Neither is conducive to them being available for labor. Additionally the cost argument doesn't track with all the other points already mentioned above (govt. incentives not working, the rich having few kids too, the orthodox having many kids no matter their wealth, etc.).

  39. I would rather India not get involved in Tibet. It's on the other side of the Himalayas and so far easier for them to defend than us to do pretty much anything in. Nepal is as far as I'd go in regards to protecting Indian interests. Beyond is just too hard to be worth it.

Try reading Ha-Joon Changs' (he's Korean fyi) book 'Kicking Away The Ladder' about how nations develop one way and then enact policies to protect their status that impede other nations from doing the same.

  42.  @v4lgrind  The PR doesn't work that way. A few thousand deaths per year from AI vehicles will kill the industry altogether, regardless of how good the relative performance is. And they know this - that's why their trying to make it perfect before launching. They know even one death can end a company. Also, an AI with flaws can potentially be FAR more dangerous than humans - because AI's are standardized. So you'll have millions of AI's all making the same mistakes, leading to catastrophe.

  43.  @MrGamelover23  "the idea is that all these cars will be talking to each other" - no it isn't, cos this leads to a classic chicken and egg problem, similar to what's holding back electric cars today due to the paucity of charging stations. If you need all or most of the cars in the city to already be like your AI-driven 'solution', then your solution is only meant for pie-in-the-sky new cities like Saudi Arabia's NEOM project. They need to be able to work in existing environments to have any meaningful impact.

  44.  @Quickshot0  This is more about advances in batteries and capacitors than lasers really. The problem with laser weapons - and why we don't have laser guns (one of the reasons anyway) - is that you need a lot of power to have a laser strong enough to burn through metal quickly. Hence why even now they're being put on large vehicles, especially ships, that can meet those power requirements. And even they couldn't do it until recent decades. Lasers, ironically given how they're talked up in scifi, are just really weak. Projectile weapons will likely continue to be the norm for a long time to come as they're just more practical for most use cases. We may even never see practical handheld laser guns! 😢

Read 'Kicking Away The Ladder' and '23 Things They Don't Tell You About Capitalism' both by Ha-Joon Chang to see that all the things the east gets accused of now was part of the wests' development story as well (among other things the books cover as well).
