  1. India has always sought to boost industrialization and manufacturing. We just haven't been very successful at it, but not for lack of trying. Time will tell if this time is any different.

  2.  @tomeks666  By 'net grain exporter' in this case I mean they produce more than they need for themselves, not simply that they export. The 'net' is subtracting their own consumption, without any famine. Even now during a wa and sanctions they still produce far more than they consume.

And almost none of them would describe it as 'paying for the sins of your father', they'd call it 'showing gratitude to your parents'. Cos, you know, most people don't hate their parents or think of them as sinners. For those who do, these laws have exceptions. And this isn't restricted to just Asia - it's typical in Africa and Latin America and even parts of Europe (Greece, Italy, etc.) too. More generally, western attitudes, and even more specifically Anglosphere attitudes, are not some sort of global objective moral standard for all to be judged by. Especially when YOU'RE the wierd/minority ones.

  4.  @everythingandmore5537  Like I said, money is mobile. Otherwise known as 'capital flight' i.e. when rich people just take their money elsewhere. Also note that some of those 'loopholes' are intentional - they're there to stimulate investment. So closing them hurts Singapore. As unfair as this sounds, many govts. provide ways for people to escape tax as incentives to invest the money instead - which not only grows their money but the host economy too. Singapore got rich by catering to the rich.

It would likely have the way of so many African and also ex-Soviet states that were drained dry upon opening up suddenly. You need to build a proper domestic base first. India did that in the 50s and 60s. By the mid 70s sure, but any earlier would be a mistake.

  10.  @belstar1128  Look up the IMFs Structural Adjustment Programs. They have a long and sordid history. That's what opened some nations up, in most cases to their detriment. Even today both India and China retain strict capital controls for this reason, cos that was one of SAPs major mistakes.

Either way you're going to be dependent on Australia and the US, or Russia or some other autocratic regime (like they're turning to Azerbaijan for gas now, so much for caring about democracy). Europe just isn't resource rich, except for coal.

  19. This is a frequently repeated assumption, without basis. As a matter of fact India is also proof against a related claim that's made wrt nuclear weapons - that they prevent wars between nuclear armed states. That has already happened. Pakistan and India have already fought a war after both had nuclear weapons. The nukes did nothing. Secondly don't underestimate the destructive potential of conventional weapons. The Rwandan genocide, for instance, saw a million people die from machetes and small arms.

And they got into the EUV space via acquisitions i.e. they didn't do all the research into it. My point is simply that ASML wasn't as key a player before the last half decade or so, they were one among many who could have been replaced. EUV made them a monopoly

  21. Adapting to these particular export controls isn't hard and the Chinese likely know that. As the video ends, this is a statement in response to the US' own export bans to China. This is a warning shot - there's much more they can cut, many of which aren't easy to replace, if the US pushes it that far. There's no significant market they're losing here to begin with.

AI does have a very clear and obvious utility, if it can actually achieve the goal of matching human workers. Note that the metaverse faced ridicule and dismissal from the start, no one apart from Mark took it seriously. AI otoh faces outright hostility and fear. People do take it very seriously, even when it's not yet ready. So it's not a good comparison at all.

'Debt Trap Diplomacy' has been studied and debunked already. You can look up the How China Lends report about it, or the study by the Rhodium Group, or even just check out Polymatters' video here on YT about it. None of these are Chinese btw. It's literally been called a 'meme' by one of the researchers, after studying hundreds of loan agreements and how they turned out over the last two decades. If you want to bring up Africa, look up Gyude Moore's talk on China, again here on YT.

They stopped being attractive for foreign students (apart from the elite handful) awhile ago due to rising tuition costs. Unless they pull down prices, that will continue. The US is fearing the same. International students aren't bottomless pits.

It reminds me of ye olde white man's burden, and its underlying assumption of the west being the peak of humanity. Just replacing race with 'culture' in that doesn't change the fundamental hubris involved. The Chinese certainly didn't - as long as you recognized their emperors' greatness with a few gifts they didn't give a shit how you organized your internal politics. The Russians briefly did during their communist heyday, but they quickly dropped the puritanism even then and just worked with anyone. And the west has been quite willing to use force to this end, both in modern times and even more so during colonial times. Did you know that Japan wasn't entirely closed off until American admiral Perry came calling? They specifically traded with the Dutch, but everyone else was excluded. Why? Cos the Dutch agreed to mind their own business and just trade, unlike the previous Portuguese who went conversion happy and gave them a Christian headache. Evidently that style of thinking is quite hard for most in the west to accept. It's funny, I wonder what you'd think of them expecting you to become like them. It'd be laughable, and yet you do that to everyone.

I also love how you people always make everything about the West, as if the rest of the world doesn't exist. And then turn round and complain about how 'true globalization' wouldn't be all about one country. No, there is a world out there beyond the West, as shocking as this may be to hear, and it's actually where most global growth is happening. It'd also be wise not to lump in the whole West for everything the US does. Hell it's always amusing to hear that phrase used and yet it doesn't even cover all the actual western hemisphere, since South America is never considered in it. China is their largest trade partner btw, despite the US being much closer. The video itself mentioned the Chinese challenge. They're widely expected to unseat Korea soon. And if you think Chinese ships are too poor quality, then 1) that flies in the face of the industry, which needs reliability above all else (these are not toys), and 2) patently fails to explain how they got so big to begin with, unless you seriously believe billion dollar businesses just all bought the cheapest crap they could find en masse. These things are at the heart of global trade where failures cost a fortune.

  39. Man considering how much some Americans hate him and want to end his legacy, Trump sure has left a long tail that seems to have permanently altered US politics. He started the trade war, which now ironically is being pushed even harder by his opposite party successor. And with China responding in kind, it's starting a dangerous escalatory spiral that goes beyond even anything Trump envisioned, let alone did. But the real irony is just how even Trumps' most ardent enemies have since embraced his foreign policy, albeit a bit less unilaterally. He really did leave one hell of a mark on American politics, far beyond the one they keep cribbing about in the Supreme Court.

Unions are practically a bad word there, and 'union-busting' is a term made popular by America, not China. Ironically at the same time people criticize China for less worker rights, they're ALSO attacking it for its policy of cracking down on big companies in the cause of shared prosperity. Now try seeing if America ever did that.

On the contrary it's been highly successful in creating ethnic harmony, most notably by explicitly preventing the kind of ghettoization that is so common to ethnic enclaves all over the world. Rather than being divisive, it's actually reduced divisions substantially by deliberately mixing the populations amongst each other (especially via housing and zoning laws), something which almost never happens naturally.
