  2. To be killed by the job you worked so hard for, and loved. That's heartbreaking. Not the only chemist I've seen end up in the hospital for small doses of chemicals though. One of my organic chem profs when I was an undergrad nearly died because someone spilled a couple of mls of nicotine on a lab bench, and he had no idea and put his hand on it. He however knew the symptoms and got treatment immediately. Still... convinced me not to go into chemistry as a grad student :)

  9. it's interesting that nobody seems to worry about all the small bits of glass you would be sucking down with those glowing chems. yeah, that's how glowsticks work. you have an enzyme and a reactant sealed in small glass vials INSIDE the glowstick. that crack you hear when you bend them are the glass vials breaking so the chemicals can react to produce light. I frankly would be far more worried about esophageal and stomach abrasions from the broken glass.

It makes me hope he is not in a position to diagnose real patients, and he keeps his biases to the youtube platform.

  18. because nobody seems to care about sugar... which is just as dangerous as caffeine in the amounts some people are drinking these things, if not more. We're all fat now, and frankly I blame the sugary drink industry for the vast bulk of that. ever try a standard soda, like coke, but with half the sugar? it actually tastes BETTER IMO.

  34. nah. the caffeine is really the only powerful stimulant, the rest of the junk is in too low of a concentration to have much if any effect. the main problem with "energy" drinks is the sugar. SO MUCH SUGAR. IIRC, each one has like at least 50g of sugar in it. go ahead, just use a teaspoon and take two heaping scoops of sugar and shove it in your mouth. I wish they would just cut the sugar in those things in half. would even taste better. Hell, for that matter, drop the taurine, vitamin b, ginseng bullshit and just have a nice fruit drink with caffeine in it. the market is still relatively open there.

ELEMENTAL mercury is NON BIOACTIVE. it's like liquid gold. it does not react directly with your tissues. you would literally have to swallow hundreds of pounds of it for enough of it to stay in your tissues to cause problems. it's when you combine it with carbon compounds that it become extremely toxic. I do not know why so, so many people never seem able to figure this out, even though it is repeated over and over and over again. MERCURY IS NOT DANGEROUS, just like gold is not dangerous. it is ORGANIC COMPOUNDS of mercury that are dangerous. you will not die from even sucking the mercury out of an old thermometer, or even TWENTY old thermometers.
