Getting covid religion has a lot to do with the local prevalence of the disease. In NYC, there's no one left who thinks covid is a hoax, now that 1 in 7 people in NYC have tested positive and 1 in 71 have died from it. By the time this is over, the people of Arizona, Florida, Texas etc won't be in such disbelief.
3
Several people are keeping detailed "to undo" lists just for that purpose.
3
Huh. Wonder if Swamp-a-Lago has its own rapid testing system like the white house does.
3
They just chased out the most powerful and best-armed mafia (the police) so perhaps they're not as clueless as you think.
3
Well, Tony, here in the US we cling to outdated traditions designed for the technology of votes carried to the capitol by horseback, a ritualistic counting of the votes, and whole bunches of people behaving honorably. As we saw in the last two major US elections, Republicans have no interest in behaving honorably (or legally), and at this point, expecting them to is like expecting 1942's Nazis to be nice guys instead of burning your village down which is their usual MO.
3
Unfortunately the authorities in Australia are in a bind. They must keep up the current state of lockdowns merely to avoid overwhelming their hospitals. They made it this far with their "zero covid" policy, which, unfortunately, doesn't work with Delta. So now they must vaccinate ASAP, up to 70% or 80% before reopening somewhat, but they've apparently got just as many anti-science nutbags as the US does.

@fifermcgee5971 I believe we-the-people can vote him out in overwhelming numbers. I believe he will then be removed from power one way or another. But I also find it all too likely that he will spend the time before 1/20/2021 making a complete mess of things, and stirring his base to do the most atrocious things. He'll tell them to go burn down post offices for their role in handling so many blue votes .. he'll tell his Kyle Rittenhouse types to go into cities and drive around shooting at Black people .. FOXed Noise will help him perpetuate the lie that the election was stolen .. and then things will get even worse. Every good thing that president Biden does to help heal the nation and defeat covid, those fools will try to undermine and obviate.
3
When you confront Trumpanzees about how they don't have any proof of vote fraud (nor does Trump or any of his lawyers) and they insist otherwise, it's a lot like trying to explain to them that 2 + 2 = 4 when they are absolutely convinced that the sum of 2 and 2 is 5. All you can do is stand back and thank them for the free humor, basically.
3
So Trump has forgotten about Herman Cain already.
3
Is there any way we could possibly get Nancy Pelosi, Kamala Harris, and Joe Biden together to do a public service announcement? Just something basic asking people not to drive while drunk; to wear their seat belts; to drive on the right side of the road; to eat only healthy food; to make sure their guns are unloaded before cleaning them; to breathe only clean air, not tailpipe emissions. Let the trash take itself out.
3
The proper name of that particular cult is "Q-Anonsense". All of their rabbit tunnels lead to the same den, a reich-wing echo chamber where Trump's infallibility goes unchallenged.
3
Those bigly protests got under his skin. Way more people than bothered to show up for his sht-show coronation.
3
Defeating the natives in Afghanistan is as foolish as wading into your backyard during a blizzard, armed with a couple blow dryers, and trying to defeat winter.
3
@sergiosaunier No, he's too busy playing very fair against people who have no intention of playing fair.
3
Now we know where to build the wall - with them on the other side of it. The other side can be like a free-range insane asylum. It'll be like Duck Dynasty on acid.
3
I Want to Write Porn You should do some reading before opening the air scoop - or the propaganda scoop. In its thousands of years of experiencing diseases of the coronavirus family, NOT ONCE have we developed any kind of herd immunity to any of them. This includes SARS, MERS, the common cold, the common flu. Shit, we don't even have herd immunity to any other kinds of viruses, such as AIDS or cowpox or rubella or anything else.
3
Some of the corollaries of this junkie-like dependence on cheap, easy money include such things as a) cash savings rates being pushed down to near zero (thus removing some of the incentive to save in the first place); b) making it untenable to invest in things that have long and limited payoff dates, such as major infrastructure projects (which is part of why US infrastructure is in a state of decay) or industrial expansion.
3
@Halli50 Yah. I fight because I know that the alternative will be waking up someday to a nation of concentration camps, one-party rule, and the fat ugly mug of Hair Fuhrer on every screen :(
3
@julieannmyers8714 Hitler too had the support of the major industrialists and oligarchs of the time. One of the better descriptions of that can be found in "Last Train from Berlin" (1942, Howard K Smith) in chapter 8.
3
That "Democrats love terrorists" is the sort of nonsense that conservatives have been accustomed to telling themselves and each other. They've become an alt-fact cult :( Don't know if they can ever be deprogrammed and turn into normal citizens again, but I hope so.
3
Social security payments don't need to move either.
3
Yup, these are the same people who used to run around screeching "Plandemic!!!" Good thing Hitler didn't have such useful idiots here during WW2.
3
@Tony1771-yj8mc No, they're frantically hosing gasoline onto everything and lighting it up and thinking it will all work itself out.
3
The interesting thing is that there's zero upside IRL in being anti-vax and anti-mask. The politicians who push that nonsense are of course all vaccinated themselves. Same for the bobbleheads at FOXed Noise and OANN and Newsmax. But for the individual people, it's a disaster. They're like the cavemen who smear themselves with raw meat and blood and wander outside blindfolded to screech about how bears and sabre tooth tigers are just "fake news" .. they're a genotype in the process of removing itself from the pool.
3
When the reich-wing crazies talk about civil war, it's clear they're imagining operating in a vacuum of authority - or a complete absence of people who don't want their country set on fire just to appease the hurt feelings of the 2020 election loser.
3
Sending other folks' kids to die is the highest aspiration of a draft-dodger who's wormed into a position of power. DC is full of that type.
3
So here in the USA, it costs a person $3500 to get the coronavirus test. In most every other country (including China, S Korea, Italy, etc) this test is FREE. In some places, you can even schedule a drive-through test for free. But then, those countries don't let a predatory monopoly set prices for things.
3
To add: if the US were as flagrant at spending on public health as it is on vanity projects (our ginormous military presence; that stupid border wall; imprisoning Hispanics; maintaining the world's largest prison system; corporate welfare) then things wouldn't be quite so bad. But the USA is a place where it's OK to use government money to build walls but not OK to use government money to test people.
3
To be fair, it wasn't a "failure" to Trump and his brownshirts because the highest death tolls were in blue states. However, thanks to his continued downplaying of the dangers of the pandemic, millions more will die, and lots of them in red states that are underserved by healthcare resources -- as well as the older demographic that's the biggest chunk of his nutball base.
3
@selfishcapitalist3523 You forgot the sarcasm tags. Also, have you had any luck encouraging society to go back to Dickensian style living? The modern form of it can be seen in Somalia.
2
@justanotheroldguy738 Perfect and thanks! Governments SHOULD be investing in worker cooperatives anyway. Strong unions (and the working conditions created by them) are the backbone of the middle classes.
2
History remembers what happened to the last declared Aryan nation :(
2
Those who the gods destroy, first they make proud.
2
Erich Honecker of the DDR definitely approved of citizens spying on each other.
2
As in 1930s Germany, the act of putting folks into camps (and talk of putting more classes of people into camps) follows closely on the heels of divisive rhetoric. America, really, you need to do a better job reading history. Oh, and you may rest assured that every possible obstacle will be put between camp victims and polling places :(
2
@peterioannou9266 Uh, sorry, fool, the info isn't coming from "big pharma" but from every available source, and they all agree substantially. Sorry it doesn't fit your narrow anti-science agenda. But you are free to prove me right by not getting vaccinated. 10-20% of covid survivors have some kind of long-term effect, even the asymptomatic ones, so maybe your job and your stuff will end up in the hands of someone who's more worthy by virtue of not being such a fool.
2
I'd add "anti-democratic" to that list, as so many of them have made clear their desire to replace our democratic republic with a dictatorship headed by the guy who has never won a popular election.
2
Workers in America generally don't care about those lower prices putting other American workers out of work .. but they do care when it's their own job that gets outsourced. But that's because most American workers think of themselves as temporarily-poor rich people and not as working people.
2
Spot on. Just try explaining to any Trump fan that vaccines don't cause autism, that Jade Helm wasn't a massive exercise in suppressing valiant Texans, that the earth truly is round, that the Apollo landings really did happen, that Obama really is an American citizen, that Ilhan Omar doesn't spend her time in DC trying to make Sharia law apply to all white Americans, that environmentalism isn't a sick liberal plot to deprive them of their large pickup trucks, that legal abortion isn't some con to eliminate the white race and sell baby parts on eBay, and so on. They're not just exposed to propaganda; they're immersed in it, to the point where they're responsible for much of the domestic terror here in the USA.
2
We had confirmed community spread here in the USA since sometime in the first half of January, and possibly undiagnosed community spread even before that. Probably there are dead homeless people still in their tents somewhere along the west coast. Keep up the good work :)
2
Mike Hefley No, no, please do not encourage them to target Swamp-a-Lago, which is located precisely at N 26.676702 W 80.038590 .. there are innocent Floridians nearby.
2
A more likely outcome is that folks will give them a few S-400 air defense systems. Nobody in the world wants to see the US do a new war over there - except for certain chickenhawks here in the USA.
2
More like their moral basement now has a bottomless hole in it :(
2
@space.youtube Sadly, if you go on youtube, there are travel videos posted of people who've been going all over the country evading the lockdown police. Wonder what part they played in spreading it everywhere? Some of them even admit in their videos that they broke the law. Naturally they are ant-mask anti-vax folks themselves.
2
After we get over our time of mourning for the passing of democracy .. bad things are coming. Now that you-know-who has just gotten the message that it's OK to withhold aid to whoever (foreign governments, agencies, corporations, you name it) in exchange for election interference, we can expect him to go on a spree of doing just that. 2019-nCoV is bearing down on us. Witness the way the world's most modern, most thorough police state (with many drastic means for controlling the movement of people) is totally unable to keep the disease from spreading .. and surely we will not enact measures here as extreme as what China does internally. Add that to the fact that we've got Republicans in office who surely won't let a good crisis go to waste. Ask yourself this: What might a corrupt governance do under the guise of fighting an epidemic? Quarantine unwanted persons (translation: put them in camps surrounded by barbed wire). Detain anyone on any excuse. Claim that refugees could be carrying disease, and have them shot if they try to cross the border. Using the Patriot Acts, suspend congress because of an emergency.
2
@Scyllax Let me know if you can find any Republicans who can explain why they feel your vote should count for less if you are located closer to your neighbor. That's about the sum of their nuttiness.
2
Thanks! Got the idea from one of those Descent mashups.
2
There's a lot of money to be made in the stock market if you know the timing of the inflection points, just saying. Every time it looks like we're inching closer to something with China, you-know-who says or does something deeply insulting to China, causing them to step back yet again.
2
Sorry to everyone who thinks otherwise, but there is no force in the 'verse that will return the US to the conditions that prevailed in the 15 years following WW2, when the rest of the industrialized world had been bombed to smithereens, when only the US had an intact undamaged industrial base, when the US still had plenty of light sweet crude (the kind most easily made into gasoline for motor fuel), when uneducated workers could make fantastic money and get fantastic benefits. NOTHING will ever bring that back.
2
Bingo (to OP) because poor Caitlin still identifies class-wise with rich whites and their militias, of which Q is one. The OafTweakers are another.
