  10. Starmer is an EU supporter, but he and the EU know their 'UK' dream is over. There would have to be a re-join referendum and politicians know that is unwinnable. The only reason there was not a second referendum was pro-EU MPs knew it would make things worse for them.

What - you think 3 million EU workers in the UK don't elbow their way into available work and housing? We have more unemployed people and more homeless people, lower wages and higher housing costs, because of EU membership we never wanted. You claim old people with out-of-date ideas voted for Brexit and these people are dying-off - So how would the country have voted on the Maastricht Treaty had they been allowed? Perhaps you're OK - so you don't see a problem.

  19. Did any Remain campaigners mention the UK joining the euro? The pro-EU UK government leaflet paid for with £9 million of everyone's money (over and above the fair spend limit) stated: "We will not join the euro" did this mean 'never'? Why did no pro-EU activist complain or oppose that statement when the single currency is a flagship mandatory policy of the EU? Did not a single person in the UK want the UK to ever join the eurozone? Or did all the pro-EU activists keep quiet about their 'true vision' like sneaky little bastards?

However, when these people learn that, the causes of this were not Brexit, but pandemic and war against Russia and that, when compared to EU countries like Austria, Italy, Belgium, Denmark, Norway, Southern Ireland, Netherlands, Finland, Sweden, France, Germany the UK is actually less expensive for food - they will understand they have been lied to.

On your other points - of course you would be content if your ideas were implemented, but others would not be content.   23.  @atomiccritter6492  That 'clamour' you refer to was an attempt by pro-EU politicians/media to weaken the validity of the Leave vote - 'some voted for this others voted for that - no one knows what they voted for' - this was no more than pro-EU propaganda. The UK electorate voted to be out of the EU, just as they would have voted to be in the EU had Remain won. As for 'education' the word 'educate' means 'to instruct a person what to think' so these 'educated' people are followers and not necessarily the people we should all follow. Besides, people like Enoch Powell and Tony Benn were the most academic and educated politicians of the last 100 years and they both advocated Brexit from opposite ends of the political divide. Any person with intelligence wold understand that, 'democracy' has nothing to do with the presumption of measured intelligence - it has everything to do with equality of citizenship.

  24. It's getting clearer by the month the only way to 'stop the boats' is to leave the ECHR. The best way to sort this would be let the people decide at the next general election. If the Tories make a manifesto pledge to 'leave the ECHR and stop the boats' and Labour and Lib Dems oppose, we can have a full-on national debate and election campaign on 'immigration'.

  30.  @Richie-j5p  I'm in the UK and travel to the EU 2/3 times each year. I simply buy Euros in the UK and the postman brings them to my door, what I don't spend in the EU, I keep for next time. As for getting through EU immigration with a UK passport - everyone ends up waiting for their hold luggage - so you can't get out any quicker.

  32.  @pmoran7971  I voted to change the system in the 2011 AV referendum. Of course, the FPTP system has flaws, but it's what people voted for. There are issues with PR too, as it's prone to handing disproportionate de facto power to minority 'quack' parties.

In order to gain most votes (power) the political parties formulate policies to be popular and this results in the voters on the right and the voters on the left being evenly divided with a midpoint reflecting the average voter; and in a PR system, typically, the political parties on the left and right gaining a similar amount of votes. This then results in a parliament in which policies cannot be passed with majority vote. Enter the minority 'quack' party that most did not vote for and furthest from the views of the average voter. This party can now begin 'punching above its [democratic] weight' to provide the necessary votes to pass (or not pass) the policies and demand policies in return.

  38. I'm in the UK and I voted for Brexit. We are not experiencing any problems because of Brexit. 'Brexit' is not even a news story - 'covid' is far more important. There has been some minor hiccups with hostile EU border controls, but this will be sorted and no UK business will lose out, because there is 100% government compensation. The only real losers are the EU citizens going without fish.

  44. I know why I voted for Brexit. I wanted to live in an independent country and topple those that had connived to hand the UK to foreigners. I know that once the UK sets a new course away from the EU it will venture farther each day and re-joining the EU will be a political impossibility. Soon no UK politician will dare to utter the words: 'I think the UK should join the EU' for fear of being laughed out of town. We've been there done that - it was a massive mistake and we are never going back down that road. I feel confident I have got what I wanted from my Leave vote.

  47. We hear non-stop from the media about 'the country being divided' - but had Remain won by 1% this would not be an issue... Phrases like: 'Now the people have decided' and 'The country has united behind the decision' would be used instead.

The reason we had the referendum was to establish whether representative parliamentary democracy was really serving the people well. There was a question that, with the main parties of government all agreed on pro-EU policy, MPs had become removed from the electorate on an issue voters could not pragmatically vote for in FPTP general elections. The country was divided and it was apparent parliament was not obviously representative of public opinion on a constitutional matter; this question needed to be answered. In the end, the referendum proved UK pro-EU activism was a political ideology that had infested UK politics and after half a century was shared by at best 20% of the UK electorate.

  50.  @bryangeake5826  The referendum was only advisory - the Conservative Party did change policy - the Conservative Party won a general election on Brexit policy and then did Brexit. Nobody changed the representative parliamentary system - it was exactly the same as when the UK joined the EEC and joined the EU.
