Because, UK unemployment is 3.9%, France is 7.5%, Germany is 5.9%, Spain is 11.7%, Greece is 10.4%, Sweden is 8.5%, Austria is 7.6%, Finland is 8.3%, Italy is 7.2%. Portugal is 6.6%, Ireland is 4.2%, Poland is 5.4% and the entire EU is 6%.

  7.  @verystripeyzebra  OK so, the 2023 cost of living index (which obviously takes account of earnings) shows that, when compared to countries like Norway, Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Netherlands, Southern Ireland, Iceland, France, Germany, the UK is an easier place to eke out a living.

  15. Starmer's decision to force Corbyn to stand as an independent will backfire spectacularly. The English people love a principled underdog and Starmer has just made Corbyn the big story of the next general election. It's the people who don't really understand politics that swing general elections. These folk usually choose a prime minister over a manifesto. Starmer has made himself look like a petty bunny boiler. Trust me, a million votes will go from Labour to Conservative just to teach Starmer a lesson for being such a two-faced bully. Starmer should have remembered nearly 13 million people voted for Corbyn to be prime minister in 2017.

There is a huge difference between a deliberate plan to murder/rape/kidnap hundreds of unarmed men, women, children and giving civilians advance warnings of bombing targets, The Israeli government must destroy hamas, because it has a duty to protect the people of Israel. Should hamas be able to murder Jewish children in cold blood and then run to hide behind Arab children demanding all decent people should not allow children to be harmed? How can Israel allow this despicable cowardice to continue? Phil is correct in saying nobody wants to see people getting killed, but meanwhile, in the real world this has been going on since man picked up the jawbone of an ass.

  18. No one suggested Brexit would present no initial trade difficulties or that, there would be an instant upturn in the UK economy. And of course covid is making normal economic activity impossible. The British people were fully aware the UK leaving the EU would not be a seamless transition. The Remain campaign had ample opportunity to inform the UK electorate of all its perceived economic negatives of Brexit. There was a UK Government leaflet posted to each home in the UK at a cost of £10m (over the fair spend rules) explaining the UK would be financially better off in the EU. Then there were the Remain supporting economic experts, the Governor of the Bank of England, President Obama, The Conservative Party, The Labour Party, The Liberal Democratic Party, The Green Party, The leaders of the EU 28, The UK Universities, UK Business organisations, Tony Blair, John Major, Richard Branson, the BBC, the Guardian, the Financial Times, ITV News, Sky News, Channel 4 News. All giving the UK electorate plenty of information before the vote. The people listened, reflected and weighed the evidence and then when the arguing was over and in the seclusion of the voting booth they chose freedom over fear. These are the people who will make Brexit a success.

  23. The Tories want to win the next general election and they will do this with 'Brexit benefits' making people think Brexit is the best thing since sliced bread. The obvious tool for this is the UK's newfound control over VAT. Expect massive cuts that help poor people (VAT off takeaway food, VAT off cheap adult clothes and shoes, VAT off potato crisps) these things will deter people voting to leave the UK and joining the EU for extra VAT.. 'Vote for independence and pay 20% more for you fish supper!'

  24. An overcrowded unsuitable inflatable boat attempting to cross many miles of open sea with changeable conditions and busy shipping lanes is a clear safety concern. If someone wanted to operate a ferry across the River Seine, the French authorities would never allow such overcrowding on safety grounds. The French authorities are fully aware of the dangers and risk to life (including children unable to make decisions), but French officials just stand by and encourage this highly dangerous and illegal activity. It would be very easy to intercept the transit of these boats and very easy to render the boats unusable. There is no question France is responsible for people in France and should have at least made attempts to prevent these deaths. The sad truth is the French officials probably wished them 'bon voyage' and waived to them from the beach - so much for 'EU regulation'.

  28. What a silly thing to say. To begin with covid has nothing to do with Brexit and an independent UK with stricter immigration rules would have fared better. As for Brexit related trade disruption (that has not happened yet); it was obvious from the start that leaving the EU would involve some difficulties. The UK has chosen to take back control of its destiny and as history shows; freedom is never easy.

  31.  @geraldhewing329  Brexit isn't right or wrong or they would not have held a referendum on the matter. If there was a referendum on 'what 25% of 40 was' then those voting '10' would be right, but we don't have referendums on that type of question. In any political campaign there are claims that might not be factual, but that's the nature of the beast. 'Vote for me and things will be better than if you vote for the other guy' don't both sides say this - how can both statements be true? Leave made statements and Remain was able to say why it believed those statements wrong and vice versa - the electorate heard all the evidence from both sides and voted - this is called 'democracy'. I don't believe Leave did lie during the campaign: if you example what you believe was a Leave lie - I will be happy to explain why I believe it was not.

Don't get me wrong - I like people in EU countries - I just don't want to interfere in their countries and I don't want them to interfere in the UK.

  40.  @abbofun9022  I think that it is fair to say that John Wilkins 'invented' the system we now use in the dictionary sense of the word invented (invent: to create by thought, originate, new method) because, although the parts had been around for a while, it was Wilkins' plan for a system that could be used to measure all things based on a single universal measure, that was completely new.

Neither of us know what life in the UK would be like had we stayed out of the EU and neither of us know what the UK will be like in the next 20 years. We ether trust in democracy or become a fascist state run by a few that think they are too clever to abide by majority decision.

  48. Remain voters should stop finding fault with Brexit as it serves no useful purpose. The UK is out of the EU and that's not going to change. The political distance between the UK and EU will just become greater with time. Had Remain won by a whisker the losers would have been told: 'Old people wanted Brexit and the young voted for the EU, so there will never be need for another referendum'. There would have been huge pro-EU celebrations and politicians would have promised to address the economic and emotional issues that caused so many to vote against the advice of parliament. It would have been portrayed as 51% level headed vote, 30% angry protest and 19% swivel eyed loonies. The point is those that voted for the UK to become an independent, democratic and sovereign country would have been expected to shut-up and respect democracy.

These people never had popular support for their 'true' vision and they were warned at the time the UK people would never give up sovereignty.

  50.  @pmoran7971  Not 'strange' at all - the UK parliament has a 'first past the post' electoral system which favours established political parties. This is how a minority of citizens were able to gain power and impose the EEC/EU on the people of the UK. That's why it took a single issue referendum to put that minority of citizens in their box.
