>> I'm amazed as to how ill-informed most people are on Socialism.
If you would step down for a moment off your high horse and think about it, there are reasons for that.
For one thing, and not the only aspect either, there are differing connotations or each term, as well as different interpretations and spins.
For instance, to me. social democrat means on domestic government issues one tends to be Liberal, as opposed to social conservative, for example.
democratic socialist means socialist in terms of differentiating socialism in democratic nations from fake socialism in countries like China or Russia, that in my opinion are not socialist at all. but more facist, micromanaged by a central committee.
Of course all countries are more or less governed by something that could be called a central committee, but in those terms it is how and how well those committees represent the people ... in other words, how republican, small r, are there.
I don't know if you can be amazing or blame the people for their confusion on socialism. Confusing people on the hows and whats of discussion governmental criticism and change of course benefits the government and the elites that runs a government.

I don't like the crowd that signed up for the New American Century neocon movement, but I think they got their mission statement exactly right ... and I am an extreme leftist.
What has happened in politics these days is that somehow if you are on the Left you have to be against America, the military, Western Civilization, basically everything that is large-scale.
Well, I am not. l I think the world needs a military cop, and the US is the best suited for it. I think the way Western civilization, rule of law, capitalism - AND real socialism gets a foothold in this world is by the West, led by the US, the arsenal of democracy.
Yes, these are sad and not lived up to ideals, but compared to the rest of history, we are doing better and constantly improving.
It is only in domestic policy and overaggressive military policy that the neocons were wrong.
I would also remove that world imperial, but if you like you keep it. It doesn't matter. World history moves in ways that are hard to understand and it looks ugly most of the time. People like to compare the US and Rome, but Rome never had elections. Rome never had laws against slavery, or really much rule of law at all. You have to compare what IS, not what you imagine in your head as perfection.

There are a bunch of rabid far-Left-wing nuts that do not even see what Bernie stands for they are so against Israel and the Jews ... it's crazy, but I think the Democrats are better without the nutcase, and can reach out to the moderate Republicans who are amazing at how the Republican party is getting way too far-Right-wing. It is time for a rebalancing of the parties, a fight for the center, a debate for rationality. I think Bernie can win this thing, he came out of nowhere, he is not crazy or threatening, he is not a political-connected sell out like Clinton, Bush's, Obama, of Kerry. He is the guy all Americans should be able to relate to, and if you can not agree with everything he says, at least you can reluctantly acknowledge he makes sense and will do what is necessary, or try to, and he will not just sit there doing nothing with Congress does not fall in line.

You people are clueless ... Robert Heinlein was a Democrat and even ran for office in California. He, like most thinking people, got disgusting with the corruption and stupidity of the Democratic establishment, even back then, way ahead of everyone who is just now starting to get it. He basically had nowhere to go politically in terms of parties and got disillusioned. The problem is not that the book was bad, just that it is outdated and overcome by history. It's hard to read and understand his viewpoint today. The movie is a good reinterpretation of the book. The idea is presented early on about how force is the absolute authority from with all political power is derived. If you think that Israel would exist if it did not have superior military force, or that the allies would not have won WWII if they did not have superior military force, you're crazy. The sad thing that is happening today is that the US, the arsenal of democracy - so called, is being owned and controlled by anti-democratic parts of the country that have gained power through economic corruption. It is a very dangerous time.
To blithely say that Robert Heinlein thought war was great is just s stupid comment. Heinlein's point is that force is the decider, so that war is necessary if you want to protect your society, so you have to institutionalize the value of self-preservation in society so that society does not get weak and fall to barbarians from outside or rot from inside.

This whole side issue about guns is just Hillary's way to try to get above Bernie on one issue. The problem is that the gun issue is wedged tight and only moves a little bit over time. The issue with guns is that it is a Constitutional right. It is not going away. So, the point is that the gun issue is not a major issue in America. Yes, when there is a shooting it is terrible, still, it is not as important as ...
Inequality
Health Care
Education
The shrinking Middle Class
Global Warming
Money in Politics
There are so many more important ideas that if we take care of will lead to there being less gun violence. When people live and grow up in a happy, fair, well-adjusted society they will not want to murder other people, or commit crimes.
It's really dishonest of Hillary to make this election about guns, because it implies that she only cares about tricks to make herself look good, not honesty, sincerity. In her life Hillary has been a team player, playing for the most right-wing Democrats, that is - her husband Bill Clinton. Then it was Henry Kissinger. She is all about corporate connections, Wal-Mart.
Will she do anything to get money out of politics? I don't think so. Will she do anything but push the more conservative agenda of the Democratic party, to try to use the Democratic Conservatives to do the Republican agenda ... I just don't think so.
When she talks about what she did ... she did not lead. She always talks about how she helped do something, which means she was not a major player or leader.
And by the way, when it comes to pandering ... what on Earth do you think Hillary Clinton is doing, she panders as well as anyone, it is her main mode.

It's a tough call on VP ... getting ahead of ourselves a bit.
First, Warren does not have the credentials that Bernie has, and after the Obama fizzle, I think we all have to worry about that. Let's try to get experienced people who stand for something in office, not the latest flash in the pan.
Also, VP is a nothing post. Warren could be much better used in another post other than VP. VP's never make it to the Presidential office. Sitting around for 4 to 8 years is not a good resume for a Presidential candidate in most cases.
Finally, what about the "balance" of the ticket, if that matters any longer?
I hate to say it, but I think Hillary or Bill would make a good VP candidate. It would really be Hillary's forte. She likes to get out there and make a scene, and if something happened to Bernie she is about the most respected other Democrat to take over. If she'd do it. For Hillary it would be let down after letdown, but I think the Clintons like and need the limelight so maybe!
