  1.  @bigbadt  Just go and check battery prices over the years... Its going down. Then look at battery capacity and its performance, that one is going up. Aka there is steady progress with battery technology without any actual limitation in sight. We have multiple battery technologies even today which would be a huge deal if scaling of its production was solved. Electric is the future, its only question how long it will take to reach the point where even considering any other alternative looks foolish.

  8.  @TyTy-gm8yb  You do know that those tanks are connected with fuel lines which can quite easily be broken and release highly pressurized hydrogen which in that state is highly flammable? And you have like 3 tanks in one car with 3 supply lines...

Second, no idea how is power source in the car relevant here... You can charge your BEV from your own solar panel if you wish... You can disconnect it from internet if you wish... So what the hell is this magical switch you are talking about and scared of?

And while BEV battery fires are dangerous, those are generally slow, so if we would talk about car crashes then you will have plenty of time to get out of your car, with hydrogen cars, well, if that tank raptures and you get a spark, well... It will vaporize you in few milliseconds, so i guess its a better way to die... And you will be paying crap ton more for everything, this is why currently some car companies selling hydrogen cars gives 15k on fuel as a bonus. Why do you think this is the case? Because it will cost you crap ton of money... Mirai, hydrogen car, has like 400 mile range, has 5kg tank, while one kg can be around 20-35 bucks, so you are looking at 100-160 bucks per 400 miles. Now check it with BEV's... That price will go down to like 30 bucks if you used superchargers, less if you charged at home. Do you see potential long term issue here?... Then add exponentially higher maintenance costs... And just FYI Toyota Mirai starts at 50k, so its initial price is higher than BEV's, its fuel more expensive, its maintenance is higher... So stop dreaming about something what isint real.

You can't get hydrogen from water without putting in more energy than you will get back from water... If this was possible then we would have water/electrical power plants.

  29.  @dee1089  Your own comment has that basic key word "currently". Batteries are improving every single year, especially now when more companies start investing more money into R&D. We have multiple promising battery technologies which have been shown to work, issue is just scalability of its production. Batteries are the future.

From which big oil web site did you got this silly idea? And battery technologies are getting improved every single year, check battery capacities per kg over the years, or its price. And we have multiple battery technologies in the works which could make HUGE difference, like carbon nanotube ones, its only question if that one can be used on scale, aka issue with scalability, aka needs more R&D, aka no real limit in sight yet. And batteries are not getting bigger, cars getting bigger ranges while having same/similar battery capacities.

That's fine and dandy, but there is limited amount of sun you could ever get from a footprint of a car, which amounts to not that much, I mean, you could maybe get 10-20km of range over entire day if your car was sitting during really sunny day, but its not really worth the effort to cover entire car with solar panels.

  32.  @MrTiltmealot  Most efficient solar panels at the moment extracts around 25% of sun's energy, so at best you could go 4x that, but realistically it would be extremely hard to even double current efficiency, as even now major breakthroughs in solar panels are measured basically in fractions of single percentage. There are some new ones which tries to grab wider range of solar radiation, but its not that much more and cost of those panels is huge due to them being multi layered. We will get better batteries sooner than we will get solar panels worth placing on your car.

It would be all sunshine and rainbows if you only looked at the fact that you are capturing CO2 and then releasing same one, but you are ignoring entire production process of making that fuel in general which will generate more CO2 than you will capture back, aka its not carbon-neutral

They could come up with V12 hydrogen combustion engine, but if they build 5 of those and sell each for 5million, well, its a maybe cool toy for the rich, but nothing more than that.

  49. Having engine which can run on hydrogen is really easy, we had one since 1806. Issue is with how corrosive hydrogen is, not in how you could use it in an engine.
