@JH-lf4ql FPTP is a broken system, but that does mean Labour can win, while Starmer personally loses It's a long shot, but if it happens, it will be hilarious!
2
@glennbateman4483 and then sleepwalk through government 🙁
2
My guess is wages will be low, but with much better working conditions. Management would be about building a community of people who want to be part of something rather than the current model of implied threats of being sacked into skintness if you don't fall in line
2
@clivet3252 yep, they wanted everyone focused on the very tame birthday cake, rather than the suitcases of booze that lead to no 10 getting drunkenly trashed, inside and out!
2
His entire plan is a post-it note, on which is written "hope the Tories implode" There is no second post-it
2
@JH-lf4ql a government actually investing in ordinary people, because their support base is ordinary people, not big money donors? That kind of thing 🙂
2
Because there's stength in solidarity. Standing alone is much harder
2
Thatcher helped write that script - let's make sure she gets credit for it!
2
Depends how you do it. In 2009 Australia did a stimulus package that gave everyone more money, simply a $900 cheque to every citizen This proved to be much healthier for the economy than giving it to the banks!
2
@JH-lf4ql red are preferable to blue, but not by much Expect the NHS to get better under red, but don't expect housing to be affordable under either Thatcherite party
2
I've been calling Steeting Labour's Gove for a long time - you're not the only one to notice!
2
The Tories are now three (and counting) factions, and none of them has enough common ground with the others to cooperate They also know none of them has the numbers to hold Parliament by themselves, leading to the current mexican standoff They can't stand each other, but can't stay standing without each other. A dilemma they thoroughly deserve!
2
Anyone remember MySpace? If you don't, that's because Murdoch bought it, and his meddling sank it like a lesd balloon Looks like history is repeating itself with billionaires failing on the internet!
2
@deemitchell9544 thing is, I can believe Starmer would be petty enough to push someone out for saying the wrong thing about his hair As opposed to transphobia, misogyny and islamophobia, which he's happy to overlook if you say nice things about him (and his hair)!
2
A lot of that is because we have a tax code specifically designed to enable tax dodging Reform the tax code and they won't find it so easy!
2
Bingo! I would like to see this extended graph, too
2
@JH-lf4ql what do we do if we want an end to Tory austerity, not just an end to Tory rosettes?
2
@JH-lf4ql I wish I could share your confidence, but Reeves is talking more like Osborne than Brown, at a time when we really need a Roosevelt
2
I am a Londoner now, but grew up in Tyneside. I donated 🙂
2
@neils4886 thing is, I reckon he'd have less influence with 47 MPs than he did as a "rebel" outsider. He might not have official seats, but he has hundreds of MPs dancing to his tune now
2
Gove is just as right wing as he always was - it's the rest of the party that's moved to be even more swivel-eyed extremist!
2
A perfect scenario would be "growth" that matches inflation. Feels positive, because numbers get bigger, avoids a deflationary economy ( which is bad ) but is actually stable, because when growth matches inflation, you're just standing still in a dynamic way 🙂
2
@imemine6494 Braverman and Starmer? No Someone like Dominic Grieve and Starmer though? That I can see
2
@imemine6494 well, Labour and Tories already team up at council level. 10 years ago I would never believe it possible in Westminster, but now? Squeeze the establishment status quo cliques of the big two parties, and who knows what could happen!
2
@keithparker1346 you need both. We need people with vision inspiring the journey, but you need someone more grounded planning the route We get good things when the two mindsets pull together rather than lock horns 🙂
2
It's irrational to deny, but sadly fsr from impossible 🙁 The blue is red crowd are all too common!
2
This Labour will run things for the establishment, but with better scraps to keep us fed rather than usiny the big stick to knock us down
2
I like Jello Biafra's answer to that question 🙂
2
I think he might actually scrap the Lords, if only because it's been stuffed full of Boris loyalists, and a manifesto pledge to reform the Lords gives him an unblockable way to get rid of them
2
@timelwell7002 maybe, but to outnumber the Boris mob the Lords would end up being the largest legislature in the world, outnumbering the legislature in countries ten times our size Even an establishment stalwart like Starmer would cringe at that kind of ridiculousness, I think
2
@stevebrooks6275 Atlee had ideas and vision
2
Sounds like they have the funding and expertise to target campaigning where it's effective. This doesn't sound like a counterproductive protest vote
2
Happily our Greens have found a demographic coalition that seems to be working, and coexists comfortably We have a growing ecosocialist group. Whether you're opposing billionaires because they're polluting the planet, or opposing them because you just want to afford a house, the common ground is strong and effective 🙂
2
Bankruptcy and asset siezure is the answer They wanted capitalism? They're in fatal debt and are failing. Enjoy the capitalism, shareholder people!
2
Damo, if you're interested in my take on turning around the "politics of envy" line, we need to turn it to "politics of responsibility" The Lord Alan types want to own everything and profit from everything, but skive off when there's bills to be paid If you own things, you're responsible for them - not just the bricks and mortar, but the institutions they represent If they don't want to take responsibility for all the things they own, we will happily have them back!
2
and even those early nukes were cleaner than the Chernobyl explosion, which wasn't a nuclear reaction, but a conventional heat and pressure explosion that blasted dirty radioactive material far and wide
2
This is why we need to tax assets Good luck hiding that mansion in an offshore tax haven 😁
2
@shinkansenshinkansend8316 taxes/rents aren't "seizing assets" 🙄
2
@shinkansenshinkansend8316 if you own leasehold property and have to pay the landowner, how is that different to owning property in a sovereign nation, and paying tax to the soveriegn government? The infrastructure of a nation doesn't pay for itself, so if you don't want infrastructure, sell up and buy property in whichever low infrastructure nation you prefer
2
@shinkansenshinkansend8316 apparently Switzerland is in the grey list. What's the magic word I paired with Switzerland to get blocked? 🙄
2
@paulinskipukprogressive4903 I am not OK with more Tories, but since Hunt and Reeves are singing from the same Austerity hymn sheet, it looks like we're stuck with them 🙁
2
That is a really weird choice - if I hug a tree, does a giant dome appear over the UK?
2
How do you know we can't tax the rich? Nobody has even tried
2
I think there are some improvements to be made in negotiation with the EU, and I am pretty sure I know what will and won't be negotiated What won't be negotiated is the regulations. Take SPS checks as an example. I think there is a deal possible there, that removes a lot of the border friction To get the agreement, there will be no discussion about what checks are expected - the UK takes off-the-shelf terms, or takes the current deal What will be negotiated is how we are going to prove alignment if it isn't done through checks at border. That will be an awkward discussion after the Tory binfire, but not impossible This is what I expect to see - not making Brexit work well but at least working slightly better than currently
2
@KernowDamo so true! Thankfully, alignment benefits both sides, if our government can show it's not going to be awkward and silly anymore
2
@dandycat2204 while also knowing that getting dragged into another middle east conflict is electoral poison Even a suspicion of it would lose votes for which ever side it sticks to
1
Maybe Starmer isn't as utterly useless as I feared if billionaires still fear him enough to bung record sums to the Tories...
1
The Tories are gone - there's plenty of people who don't follow politics closely who will vote Labour That's why I am thinking beyond the next election, as the great disappointment might happen really quickly, and we need people ready to present a positive, credible alternative!
1
I am utterly sick of Labour being able to take votes for granted. I am going to back anyone left of the Tories if they stand the slightest chance, and encourage others to do so Tactical voting needs to move beyond just booting out the Tories, and start pressuring Labour too
1
Honestly, there are so many better reasons to rip into starmer than currygate!
