The Gripen was built under the assumption that Sweden would be by default overrun in terms of air power, so they'd wage guerrilla in the air. The American philosophy of fighter design is to simply overwhelm the enemy air force by shooting it down.

  27. Turboprop planes are cheaper to operate but often not fast enough. And most do not have radar systems. Aircraft radars must draw power from a gearbox connected to the jet engine shaft (much like a car's alternator) so powerful jet engines are required. Turboprop engines are somewhat on the smaller size except for large cargo planes.

  47. 1) NATO "expansion" was basically forced by Eastern Europe trying to get protection from Russia after Transnistria and Chechnya. 2) Putin wrote (or had ghostwritten) an essay about what to do with Ukraine. 3) Even if the West pushed for the summer offensive, they actually thought it would succeed. Like the Germans saying "just go around the minefields" suggested they actually knew very little.

  48. The munitions are enhanced by the platform. Compare a Soviet RWR to the F-16 RWR situational awareness page. If you need to climb with a MiG-29 to release a bomb, your RWR will beep and give a very rough direction of the threat(s). Cockpit video from the Russian side simply shows multiple amber lights turning on when they climb, meaning the RWR is just saying "there's radar in all directions, good luck". Meanwhile the F-16 not only has a much finer direction of the threat it also gives you the kind of radar and assigns a threat ring to notify the pilot of which radars are more likely to start firing. If you need to drop a bomb, which platform would you take?
