The United States was planning to withdraw it's troops in South Korea along with it's occupation forces in Japan. The Soviet Union (along with China) and North Korea convinced the U.S. to stay after they launched an invasion on South Korea in 1950. Let us see how fast CGTN deletes this post :)

"Norfolk was long overdue to upgrade their braking systems" The braking system was fine and NOT the cause of the accident. The cause has already been published.
1
I thought it was because there were long lines of Chinese customers wanting to buy LADAS.
1
@africarain8294 "Russia never walk away from Cuba" The Soviet Union greatly reduced welfare to Cuba. Just history. Thanks to the Castro Brothers Cuba became a welfare state. Cuba has attracted some attention because of potential oil reserves. When you have oil or money, you always have friends.

We got to the moon first :)

@ronniechew6566 If you find a rock in the United States and then cross the Pacific into China, you will probably have 2 different types of rocks. The Chinese versions were younger, indicating continuing volcanic activity on the moon. You would have take samples close to where the United States got theirs to get a match.

Ukraine turned over it's nukes on the guarantee Russia would not invade Ukraine. How did that work out for Ukraine?
1
@texajp1946 Nato invasion? How many times has NATO invaded The Soviet Union/Russia? Now, how many times has the Soviet Union/Russia invaded it's neighbors? The 2014 coup only occurred because of the loss of popularity of the then current president and I recall there were people in eastern Ukraine stirring up trouble. Keep in mind Putin's low opinion of any concept that allowed Ukraine to exist and as a KGB man, stirring up trouble was part of his tool kit.
1
@texajp1946 "I stand with my comrades in donbas and Russia communist party" Victoria Nuland has said a lot of things. So has Vladimir Putin. I think because Putin has run his mouth off too much the war is beyond Ukraine at this point. Once you even hint at the use of nuclear weapons... no one no longer cares about Donbass outside of it's value to fight Putin..

"Political power grows out of the barrel of a gun." Guess who said that.

It's funny, with all the racism we hear about, Asians are rarely involved in any police shootings and other crimes. Asians are the highest income group in the U.S. Immigrant blacks from Africa are doing well and are a growing income group in the United States. Foreign born Blacks do well in school, have a higher grade average than American born blacks. Many American born blacks can't make the connection in a high tech society, you need to take your education very seriously or you become unemployable.

In the United States you have 330 million people who have their own idea as to how things should be done. The United States is a Republic, not a direct democracy. People openly voice their opinions and the candidates that seem to be the best combination of the desired qualities political groups seek support their candidate. The process is out in the open, not done behind the closed doors of a political club only a few are allowed to join. It's a messy process but better than the carefully choreographed recitals some countries do.

Before he became president Donald Trump had a very sour view of trade deals the United States was part of. He made it clear how he felt about it. Maybe China wasn't paying attention back then.
1
Since 1898 the U.S. has had military ties with the Philippines.

@holybutterfly8495 Cuba could be taken out in minutes if the Chinese were to do anything. Cuba can end bad relations with the United States in minutes if it wanted but the leaders in Cuba are more interested in keeping their jobs than making peace. Cuba doesn't need China for defense, Cuba wants money from China. They lived off the Soviet Union for decades and now they want those nice Chinese people to show them a good time. They want China to be their sugar daddy. And let's face it, China has been spending money like a drunk sailor on leave.
1
@harchiehirondo8156 Once they figured out how to make money from it, the Philippines adapted quite well. They are a flexible people :)

These arguments were made in the past. Then the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor. Sachs like too many American academics live in a pleasant little world but clearly, when one power drops away, that vacuum will be filled by another and sometimes it is a malignant other. Others will want to play ball even if Jeffry doesn't want to. When France and the U.K. lost their determination in the early 1930's, Germany rose to take advantage of their weakness. How did that world out for France and The U.K. when they went Jeffery Sachs?

NATO is not fighting in Ukraine.
1
Lamar Jackson could sue the state for wrongful conviction as others have. It doesn't fix anything that happened to them but it will give them some money for their later years.
1
"America was built on violence, slavery, genocide, invasion, discrimination and land grabbing." So was China, so were most nations. Do you have a point?

works for me :)
1
True, he will turn Russia into a satellite state of China. He needs their money bad.
1
Stopped the Japanese war on China, didn't it?
1
@FrankiePo89 Iraq, Afghanistan Iraq is a democracy and Afghanistan is a religious dictatorship. And the women of Afghanistan are now paying for it. They are left to think they could have had a normal life but their men ran. I did not support Libya. Syria is a dictatorship that blew up. We are there to help the Kurds, our long time allies.
1
@FrankiePo89 Whether they are a democracy, dictatorship, monarchy or authoritarian, what has that got to do with the west? I think you are running out of argument. Go for a nice walk in the park.
1
The west has been propping up Argentina for decades. Now China can do it.
1
Keep in mind Russia invaded Ukraine. Putin doesn't consider Ukraine a country though historically Ukraine was a country with a close association with Poland.
1
@ielee1765 You brought up Ukraine.
1
@ielee1765 Getting involved in the Mideast is dead end. Russia invaded Ukraine, Ukraine did not invade Russia. The U.S. didn't lead the war but the U.S. should support Ukraine. At this point for Russia, the Ukraine invasion is a ego operation for Putin. He was already stated a love for the Russian/Soviet Empire and deep down he wants to reconstruct it. And the loss Russia has suffered means he will try to win by any means necessary.
1
I like to ask people like you... what country was built on handshakes and hugs?
1
The Chinese won't talk about the huge trade surpluses they have. Both Europe and the U.S. have very unhealthy trade deficits with China and they can not be sustained. Both the Euro and Dollar should be devalued which would help and bring their value closer to the Yuan. This would reduce the Chinese advantage in pricing.
1
The sanctions were put in place to prevent Assad from attacking groups in the northern part of the country. This protects groups like the Kurds. All that stolen stuff is turned over to the Kurds for their benefit.
1
Feb 10, 2023 Aljazeera reported the U.S. dropped sanctions against Syria for 6 months. The U.S. also announced it is sending aid to Syria through agencies not involved with the Syria government. The U.S. usually exempts humanitarian aid from sanctions.
1
I wonder if these people leaving waved to the Chinese desperately trying to get into the U.S.?
1
Maybe if the Palestinians stopped calling for the death of the Jews?
1
@thomaspham6921 I will admit Russia is faster at blowing up apartment complexes than the U.S. is a shooting down balloons.
1
@thomaspham6921 That was amusing. My tax money at work.
1
NATO was formed in part to protect Germany from The Soviet Union. By the way, did diplomacy work when Germany invaded Ukraine in 1942? Why would they think it would work with Russia today?
1
Depends.
1
China is paying for Russia's invasion of Ukraine. One man in Moscow altered the lives of millions and none of it to the good. What good has Putin accomplished? CGTN has tip toed around this, maybe they need to discuss this.
1
Putin will be taking down Chinas economy as well. I do not think Russia will be making up the sales China loses from Europe, The United States and other countries.
1
@barkobummer The United States does not award Nobel Prizes.
1
Years ago part of geography lessons in the U.S. was if you traveled straight through the Earth, you would find yourself in China. Like so many of her generation, she is reading off points on a website, they have no understanding of the history, politics of why things happen. I run into people like her all the time.
1
The planet would be more healthy if Putin didn't start a war.
1
This was an editorial in search of a purpose.
1
Someday I hope to take Jeffery Sachs seriously. Ukraine was brutalized by Russians at least 3 times in the past 100 years. Georgia was attacked by Russia just a few years ago. Two other nations decided they want to join NATO on their own accord because of how Russia has acted.
1
@demonslayer1196 Where am I wrong concerning Russia? Always remember NATO was formed to counteract the Soviet Union's aggressive reaction to it's neighbors in Europe. After World War 2 the U.S. was ready to pack it's bags and go home when Josef Stalin started getting jiggy with it.
1
You are always being watched... everywhere.
1
First country to go to a fully gold backed currency wins the prize.
1
I think there are several countries that have no problem wanting to help Europe out. Keep in mind if sales to Europe drop, that leaves Russia with excess product. China and India are saying we smell oil and gas bargains in the air. China and India should send Europe a big thank you card :)
