The south can afford itself. It is now a progressive, modern, secular state, one of the least corrupt countries in world, with full employment, the 12th most innovative country in the world, 6th largest investor in the United States economy and with a higher GDP per capita than the UK. Dublin, not Belfast, is the economic powerhouse on the island of Ireland.
1
@connietimoney4447 I disagree, there is waste in some areas. I don't think everything costs too much and I don't know what a civil servant 'handout' is.
1
They war in NI is over since 1998 because of a peace process. There was no military solution to the NI problem, and there is no military solution to the Israel v Palestinian problem either. Everybody needs to sit down and talk.
1
No country in the world has 'true independence' - whatever that is - every country is interdependent on others. The Scots want independence from London, and as a member of the EU, the Scots would be far more independent that it is now.
1
@olcapone3039 Italy and Greece both have more independence than Scotland does as part of the United Kingdom - but it does have more independence than England, because of devolution. It is true that it is harder to leave the EU if the country is part of the Eurozone, but the EU is not a dictatorship like China, and was has nothing to do with the trio you wheeled out - the bolt hole of every conspiracy theorist ever. The only sinking ship in Europe is the UK - it will eventually break up with England eventually rejoining the Single Market and Customs Union.
1
@olcapone3039 But the UK is the one owned by the EU ..it is the only country in Europe with an internal customs border because it left the EU without a plan...
1
Probably because the report is about the Irish troops in UNIFIL.
1
In a country where support for EU membership stands at 93% [May 2019] it is difficult to see who is being betrayed by him - except maybe some west Brits like yourself.
1
Brexiters like Boris Johnson don't care about Northern Ireland, Ireland or anybody else for that matter...
1
@עומר124 They are. But the UN troops understand that both sides are terrorists, while you only think its the guy with the smaller gun.
1
@Rubin The offer of 1940 was done without the knowledge of the Unionists. No Irish government was going to accept such a 'promise' of bread today for jam tomorrow without the approval of the Unionist. A verbal agreement is not worth the paper its written on. A united Ireland will come about when a majority in the Republic and a significant majority in Northern Ireland want it. I would give about 30 to 50 years.
1
Ireland people would only want it under certain circumstances, and they don't exist. The status quo under the GFA is the best scenario - but Brexit is threat to that now.
1
The UN force is a peace keeping mission, nor a peace enforcement one. However, if they were not there, Israel would have have occupy the ground to secure their northern border and it would destablize the whole region. Would Israel be any safer? Hardly.
1
Apparently there is not a port/harbour deep enough in England for the those nuclear submarines.
1
That's not a 'fact' Mary.
1
The Congressman's father is Irish by birth. A trade deal with the UK is not in the gift of the President, it is in the gift of Congress - the vote on the President's recommendation. Even if Trump had signed a US-UK trade deal, it would not have made it through the House of Representatives - the Democrats would have blocked it with the support of Irish members of the Republican party.
1
With friends like Brexiters, who needs enemies.
1
Hey moron - Ireland has a long history of voting again, it is the direct democracy of this sort is a normal part of Irish democracy. Ireland hold constitutional referenda on average every second year and in the last 35 years has held three on abortion, two on divorce, two each on the Nice and Lisbon treaties. The only people with a problem with that are Brexiters with their abhorrence for direct democracy the Irish favour and inexperience of referenda. You don't even have a codified constitution British citizens can vote on!
1
Stupid comment. Hizbullah have been responsible for the deaths of Irish soldiers, and UNIFILs mandate is limited. Hizbullah can work around UNIFIL, same way as Israeli's have done in the past when they tried to undermine UNIFIL through Ireland; Ireland were viewed by Israel as the weak link. They weren't. Hizbullah killed an Irish soldier last year, and have little time for the Irish either. By the way, the Irish have seen how the Israeli's operate in South Lebanon. The Israeli's are no angels.
1
You need Irish food, you will all starve. They irony of it.
1
Greater Ireland.
1
Ireland has already broken ties with the UK.
1
@errol chandler The UK contributed £7 billion towards the €65 billion bailout. It was offered to protect the exposure of British banks to the Irish bank collapse. Ireland tried to pay off the debt in one final lump sum last November (2017), but the UK Treasury refused it. Therefore your analysis is inaccurate. Brexit has revealed the levels of sheer ignorance of Ireland that exists in the UK. You people are the laughing stock across Europe.
1
The UK was on the same side as France in the First and Second World Wars.
1
Nobody is blocking Brexit. The Irish just decided to stand up to the assumption that Ireland would roll over for Brexit and leave with the UK. As you can see from the body language of the two Prime Ministers, the Irish are clearly not insignificant players here and the English Taoiseach knows it. This is what Brexit means for the UK. Get used to it, its what you voted for.
1
Liar. You never mentioned that at all. All that's bothering you is that an English dominated UK is far weaker on the world stage than you deluded yourselves in thinking it was.
1
The English would need to grow a pair in order to do that...
1
@sanyachirpas1898 including Brexit.
1
Tanks? Armored Personnel Carriers.
1
Me too.
1
@gordonmills7798 I understand English temperament very well, and I also understand the exceptionalism that comes with it. I understand the role the UK print media played in distracting their readership with ridiculous stories about the EU, allowing Brussels to become the scapegoat for failed domestic policies. I understand how devolution has led to a crisis in the English sense of national identity, as it is a response to the fact that unlike the Scots and the Irish, it has no coherent vision, leadership or outlet. Without those, your national temperment will be deployed without solving the problems the Brexiter toffs exploited to deliver their agenda. A the moment the English voter is happy to be lied to, but the next generation will not be so supine.
1
@gordonmills7798 I read the first few lines and I quit. Its nonsense. It remains to be seen how much longer it will take for the English to grow a pair amd the right union. The sooner the better.
1
@gordonmills7798 Listen here Gordon, it was you who responded to me, not the other way round. Instead being angry at me, perhaps you should engage in some reflection...
1
@gordonmills7798 I understand the English perfectly.
1
People who live along it will tell you differently. A friend of mine lives in Dundalk and works in Monaghan - both in the Republic. The road he takes to work crosses the border 5 times and he does this twice a day. 'Total nonsense' indeed.
1
Huh?
1
The UK won't exit in 5 years.
1
Ireland is not playing 'victim', the UK is. Brexit is British policy, there is no Irish support for it. You are on your own, sorry.
1
The current government of Israel sees everybody as an enemy.
1
@ rodger There will be a united Ireland due course, demographics and the lack of demos in the UK are indicating that. In time the average Englishman will tire of giving hand outs to Northern Ireland and people in NI will have to starting working for a living - perhaps by then the majority will identify the Irish government as being more representative of their interests. Travelling outside the UK is expensive for you because since Brexit, Sterling has weakened considerably. This is your future outside the EU. Get used to it.
1
So, they are wasting resources in South Lebanon because only two ships are not tied up?
1
Who is everybody?
1
Spot on, Crocuta.
1
It was always a hoax...Brexiters never actually expected to win.
1
This will be news to Economists everywhere...
1
@Heavy Shoe But it suits the English!
1
@asanulsterman1025 If you are always winning why are unionists constantly complaining that their culture is under threat because nationalists are now equal to them?
1
@asanulsterman1025 Well, a third of the counties in your 'Ulster nation' are actually in the Republic of Ireland, because your ancestors needed to abandon them in order to give themselves an artificial majority in the other two thirds. You didn't answer the question: if you are always winning why are unionists constantly complaining that their culture is under threat because nationalists are now equal to them?
