This is such a great video. I've always wondered how this whole operation works but just assumed it was secret.

22 minutes of highway so 20 miles away. But yeah, it's not super bad. My family in the suburbs drive 10-12 min each way. I walk 15 min to a grocery store and sometimes even drive 20 min (in a city) one way to my favorite grocery store. But that 20min is 5-6 miles.

@bandidosantiago231 China paying for likes. Funny thing is I just saw the number of likes just go from over 4k to 3.7k so something fishy is going on. EDIT: and now 3.3k. I think YT realized some machine was liking the same comment. .now it's 3.0k

@dennohnjogu4028 Funny but not really accurate. Or is Jack Grealish the best of his era? Otherwise, terrible analogy. Byzantine was the longest stable currency but in an era with far less trade and far less currency in circulation. US is the big currency of the past 50 years in the era of globalized trade.

@theloopholeisntaahol Or bat sh1t. It's also not as lucrative as it once was now they there are other sources of fertilizer at lower costs.
8
@joaocerceau5810 ", you are only required as low cost labour force, fundamentally, there is no incentive to improve your wages after a certain threshold" and yet South Korea, Taiwan, Japan all became wealthy through this process. And China went from poorest country to middle income. Are your opinions really that void of reality? It's a process every country must take to go from poor to upper income. In that process, the country earns money which it can then invest in it's people and with sound policy can some day reach upper income.

@whatkenyan7684 I loved the safaris in Kenya. I went to the Masai Mari and the safari right there near Nairobi. Did 3 days in Daini Beach. The safaris were great but I ended up getting sever food/water poisoning (spend half a day in the ER) and picked up bed bugs while in Diani Beach. Plus my significant other got some severe eye infection in the first 2 days we were there. A trip with so many ups and downs.

@NeostormXLMAX Also, "its delusional to think that china is just going to stay the same as it was in the 80s" is a nice strawman. It suggest that there aren't consequences for China's actions. The chip sanction is indeed hurting China's economy. Countries looking to decouple or de-emphasize trade with China also have an impact. China's April manufacturing data show a contraction of manufacturing compared to March.
8
@jaspergood2091 I feel like China's issue is much worse as 30% of China's GDP relied on home construction AND 70% of Chinese people's wealth is in the homes.

@tren133 "There is a reason the single Tesla factory in China produces almost as many cars as their other three factories put together.". There are more than 3 factories and Maybe they didn't inform you in China but in 2022, Telsa built a bigger plant in Texas. It's Gigafactory Texas. And Tesla procudes over 2 million vehicles a year and 0.75 million are made in China so that's approximately 30-35%. >Only last year did the US try to enact laws such as the IRA to try to stimulate a EV supply chain inside the US in order to catch up But Telsa builds more inside of the US than in China. And what you explain here about enacting laws is exactly what China has been doing for decades, including giving Tesla generous tax benefits.

As for your concerns with the smaller cities, that’s where you can offer subsidies to entice rail companies to go there

“Don’t let perfection be the enemy of good” is probably the biggest issue with addressing homelessness in California. They are to busy trying to build $16,000 to $130,000 little home shelters rather than make more shelter space. They want to treat the homeless too well that they do not do much to help them. The video was great overall too. Really discussed all the issues

Even Wendover (Sam) usually does the 'rich guy bad' or "US sucks, Europe is the best". This video was far more nuance than I expected from Sam though lately I've seen him tone down his biases, at least on this channel (half as interesting is a different story). Don't get me wrong, it often is 'rich guy bad' but not always or it's more nuanced than that. I still think the video was a little harsh on the luxury safaris -- that seems to be the best at helping conservation efforts and helping the locals. It's a lot of money with fewer people needed in the parks to achieve the same revenue.
7
@tibor29 It actually had 4.4k when I first saw it. It's been dropping and now down to 2.9k. I was also engaged in a conversation with 4 or 5 clearly .50 cent types who all were trying to praise China and say that China is just choosing to to do less manufacturing.
7
@mattipoika3643 corporatism and capitalism are equal if socialism = dictatorship and failed economies.
7
China's growth is shrinking fast and much faster than expected. US GDP Growth has surpassed China. Fewer and fewer economist now believe China's GDP will surpass US and that's using the 'official' (inflated) GDP from China. China's annual GDP growth is now roughly half of what Japan, Taiwan, South Korea were when they were at the same GDP per capita as China.
7
@kindlin Yes, some level of welfare is needed but Latin America is known for giving too much when they can't afford it or too much that it drives away business. South Korea, Japan, Taiwan, China, Vietnam all have had great growth (the first 3 moved up to upper income) with only modest welfare to start which allowed the conditions to attract foreign investments. There's a reason Venezuela has been badly run -- they just give out money rather than actually investing it. I did after all mention that building more affordable housing, transportation/infrastructure, and education are key.
7
@TimothyCHenderson "Measuring China's GDP per capita is tricky though ", yes, because they have been known to exaggerate it. In 2007, the then next in line to be leader (Xi would beat him though) said China's GDP numbers are man made and basically just goals. It's actually not hard to measure GDP per capita, it's just that China doesn't want to properly measure it for political reasons. US has perhaps the most reliable GDP numbers and it's the 3rd most populated country. Several studies have also shown that China is likely exaggerating their GDP number by at least 1%pt a year and it's true GDP is anywhere from 40% to 80% of what's officially reported.
7
@tren133 I diidn't say it was over a million BUT " Chinese brands account for almost a third of Russia's car market," up from 9% on Jan 2022. Furthermore " sales should reach around 600,000 for this year (2022) overall.". So that's over 500,000 increase in sales to Russia alone in 2022.

People complaining about liberalization of rail after watching a that demonstrated quiet well that liberalization has lead to great growth in rail and even more in air transit.

I went to a safari in 2019. It was an amazing experience and I feel confident that they are a positive not only for animals but the people. We spent lots of money on the trip and it's still cheap compared to the lower luxury. The safari itself I spent nearly $1000 for 2 people for 4 days or so and nearly $2,000 for 9-10 days total in Kenya including flights. That included the hotel, the driver and vehicle to get us from Nairobi to the safari, the guide (also the driver), and spending buying things from the local maasai people. Downside was I get serious food or water poisoning. Now, the trophy hunting is something I'm not sure about. It incentivizes potential bad behavior in a system that can be corrupted. I understand it raises money and it's supposed to be hunting animals that are no longer fit to breed but the incentives are a potential problem. We need more research to really understand it.

Boston avg home still much bigger and the income:rent ratio is still more favorable in BOS. But there are some similarities.

@dontworry6672 100% Chinese bot.China paying for likes. Funny thing is I just saw the number of likes just go from over 4k to 3.7k so something fishy is going on. EDIT: and now 3.3k. I think YT realized some machine was liking the same comment. .now it's 3.0k

@austinhernandez2716 nothin I said negates what you said yet I stated facts that completely contradict ur statements? “Unregulated” when farming is highly regulated. “Capitalism ruined farming” when capitalism is the driving force that allowed people to cultivate far more crops per unit of land and at much lower unit costs that the % of people starving today is a tiny fraction vs 200 years ago
6
@DarkHarlequin No, that's Sam from Half as Interesting. Totally different person than Sam from Wendover. You can tell because Sam from HAI speaks with a comedic tone but this Same speaks more serious.
6
@afocus China is mostly entirely domestic market, ranking 12th in export value. Mexico is a huge exporter of automobiles. By value in billions of USD in 2021: 1. Germany 139.1 2. Japan 85.6 3. USA 54.7 4. South Korea 44.3 5. Mexico 39.9 12. China 22.4 By number in millions: 1. Japan 3.0 2. Germany 2.4 3. South Korea 2.0 4. China 1.6 5. USA 0.97
6
@Kun..07 "doesn’t matter whether it’s domestic or export oriented." it kind of does for THIS conversation we are having. But China until 2021 or so was building almost entirely dirt cheap vehicles that sell for little. "Without economies of scale, companies will not open plants. " You do understand that factories are built all over the world for vehicles? And that because of the price of shipping vehicles is expensive, manufacturing tends to be close to the market. That's why Mexico is a big car producer -- literally the point of this video. That's why Japanese companies have many factories in north America. That's why the vast majority of China's build is for domestic market and it's exports are Russia next door and Australia.
6
@Kun..07 with 10% of the population, of course they can never match China in total numbers. They don’t have the number of workers to do that. But as per capita, they certainly can. Wikipedia has per capita production of automobiles and last year data is 2020. Mexico was 1.5x higher than China. US almost 2x higher.
6
@AndreVictorGoncalves "Only Tesla making cars in the USA right now" is the lowestIQ post I've seen. Tesla only makes a small fraction of the cars produced in the US. The auto industry is very strong in the US but some of it has moved to Mexico.
6
@mystery19933 What exploitations? You want Kenyan's to stay poor forever?
5
@mystery19933 Change my mind how? You're making an argument to not give poor people any business. How is that good?
5
@J_X999 Beijing worker, what's your thoughts on Xinjiang?
5
@AndreVictorGoncalves You are questioning if it's better to be in China's position? Where 70% of people's wealth are in homes, 30% of GDP is tied to construction, and they have 1/5 the GDP per capita of the US?
5
@AndreVictorGoncalves My numbers are wrong? Then why not state what those numbers are? Hmmmm Second, China investing heavily on infrastructure is ALSO a problem now. They have built up a large amount of debt in more recent years building infrastructure that really isnt needed. Polymatter (a friend and 'coworker' of Wendover through Nebula) has many videos detailing China's issues with it's debt and infrastructure spending. Long story short and in the simplest way that I think a child (u) can understand, more infrastructure isn't always good because it gets harder and harder to find more projects that have return on investment making it worth it. Imagine two cities separated by river. One bridge bring GREAT return on investment (ROI). The 2nd bridge brings good ROI but less ROI. Each bridge will bring lower and lower ROI. If building that 100th bridge is or sure going to be far more costly than the ROI you get from that bridge Everything you stated and the tone of it suggest you work for Beijing.
5
@J_X999 Praised Xi, denied the bad things happened (like lockdown dragging economy down and thus many firms sent parts of their operations out of China). REpeated See See P 'arguments'. What are your thoughts on Xinjiang?
5
@tren133 "Tesla in no way produces 2 million cars a year. At least not yet. " You're right, that's the current capacity. China's plant is 1/3 the total capacity. Tesla opened up a HUGE facility in Texas and another factory in Germany in 2022. In addition, they are in the process of building Gigafactory Mexico for 2024 opening. That means a smaller and smaller share of of what Tesla produces will be from China. The point is you were very misleading with ". The EV value chain inside China is just that much more advanced than anywhere else in the world. Only last year did the US try to enact laws such as the IRA to try to stimulate a EV supply chain inside the US in order to catch up, " The US is part of NAFTA (or whatever the name is now) so a lot of it's productions are across 3 countries. Tesla already had the same capacity in the US as it did in China BEFORE the "IRA to try to stimulate a EV supply chain inside the US in order to catch up". And a big reason Tesla is building in China is because the tens of billions in subsidies they have received. >As for Russia, I'm certain Chinese exports now make up a higher percentage of the market, but that's due more to overall market crashing and western carmakers pulling out rather than Chinese carmakers sending more cars in That's kind of my point. That 600,000 of that increase from 2021 to 2022 was from sanctions on Russia. >Even if the Chinese now hold 50% markeshare inside Russia, that would still only account for a small 5-6% of their total export numbers. I dont have figures on the value by country but in 2022, Russia was about 20-25% of the automobile exports for China. 600k out of about 2.5 million or 3.1 million vehicles. (I'm seeing two different numbers). (edit: 2.5 million is passenger vehicles, 3.1 million include commercial vehicles).

@cgmason7568 All the China accts show up whenever a story includes China.
5
@StayActive98 I think I got what your saying, yes many people from China using VPN to come here or are living abroad. Many of them get 50 cents (RMB) per post but some just do it for the glory of China.
5
@SelfProclaimedEmperor RC Brascan sounds like a 50 centers (paid by CCP). Wendover is harsher on US than anyone but he complains about China? And the nuclear plants take years and they only have a few in the pipeline which probably will only cover some of the increase in power china will see
4
Not really...the problem in the west is mostly from LACK of buildings while in China is TOO many buildings that are empty

@gadierv9821 Puerto Rico a colony? Maybe you’re ignorant on the topic but Puerto Rico has voted to stay a territory. Don’t be dumb and blame the US for the choice PR makes
4
@gadierv9821 most people believe in independence and yet they don’t vote for it. That means most people don’t want independence. WTF is wrong with you?
4
@thanksyoutubefortakingmyhandle Out COld was 2001-- it's closer to the 80's than it is today by 11 years!

It hasn't been demolished but they are preparing to burst the bubble at some point.
4
@flakgun153 Correct. The bubble isn't popped yet. They are propping it up to keep it from deflating but the bubble will have to pop.
