Instead of waiting for a moment for the march to pass, he decided to try and drive through the crowd and possibly injure or even kill someone (and put himself at risk for retaliation). They weren't attacking people in cars; there's no reason whatsoever to do that.

That's how things get done. Drivers can wait a few moments, or perhaps join in. There's no reason to risk someone's life and limb.
