Coffee seems to be drug of choice for all. At sea or on land.

"Inevitable?" No. They were in a well made and crewed ship. "Inevitable," implies they had zero shot at all. Now how it blew up? Yeah, lucky shot.

@WraithMagus Actually, today a sub with drones would be nice to have. Subs have a huge recon and special Ops function. The ability to launch airborne drones, armed or not could be useful.

Chip on shoulder is showing.
5
It would nice if the US Navy could get that much use out of their LCS....😏
5
There was no lack of ships. Just a lack of takers. Many today face scrapyard or sinkex.

On the Merchant side... The 1950's saw the introduction of container ships. This made Liberty ships obsolete. Jet travel killed the Atlantic liner trade. So they get scraped. On the warship side? Cold War threats and defense cuts means older ships get scraped for newer, less manpower ones. The NATO threat of the late 1950's was ASW. So the need for big gun surface ships faded. The naval gun fire role in Korea and Vietnam was what saved the Iowa's and the De Moines.

@billiardsandsnookervideosn8319 They are booms for torpedo nets. Minesweepers are different device.

Same dream.....

The Confederates have about as much life as the Oakland A's.
4
The quick answer? The Torpedoes cost like $10k a peice in the 1930's. You want to spend that in a Great Depression? Next, the USN Ordinance board thought they knew better. Failure has to be by human error. Our weapon is fine. Last, lab conditions and real world use was differrent.

A 5 Minute in guide for Sub fans today.
4
Was that a Elco or Higgins made boat? I always liked the small stuff Navy.😎
4
The escorts did the shooting.
4
At least at least you had a fancy computer program. These guys are using drafting tables and slide rules.
4
Yes, but the Essex class has more room.

🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦 Oh, those loonies.... 🦆

@alainjoyeux809 actually one of the US Navy's China gunboats. Was captured by the Japanese and put in service. USS Wake (PR-3). The ship was captured on December 8,1941 on the Yangtze River. Renamed, IJN Tatara still 1945. Then......gets crazier still..... We give her to the Nationalist Chinese. They rename it Tai Yuan. And then..... The Red Chinese captured it in 1949.

Will the marriage last after he starts listening to dry dock on his honeymoon?
4
@sarjim4381 And yet the same basic engine powered the Panther & Cougar. So Rolls Royce was not total screwups.😒
4
@SZKARLUPIEN The fire control. The elevated level lets you see farther and away from sea spray.
4
Another week, another question about how to cheat, rig, avoid or loophole the Washington Naval Treaty? This a endless obsession thread now....
4
You miss read the history. Most of the losses were by dumb bombs. Not missiles. And the AA defense systems were designed for a different threat type.
4
That makes zero sense. Kills only count with witness confirmation and the film backs that.
4
@warrenlehmkuhleii8472 Your joking? Right? The USN was tiny. It would offer little help to the Royal Navy.
4
To be truthful honest, Supermarine never did make a decent Naval fighter ever.
4
@iKvetch558 you already have four carriers. They're only expecting to face 2.
4
@brendonbewersdorf986 the US Navy did. The USS Akron and USS Macon.
4
@brendonbewersdorf986 it's not possible to house them like a hanger. But they did have ships with Mooring masts...
4
@jukebox_heroperson3994 not really blowing anything out of proportion. And yes, we did bad things. a lot..... They just tend to get swept under the rug of History.
4
A flag ship is what ever ship the task force commander rides in and has staff.
4
@Drachinifel Wikipedia basically states they stayed in the mothball fleet. But changed designation from CV's. They were never active again.

@morgan3688 If not for such pioneers, we wouldn't have SEALS today.
4
Class rename? Thresher Class subs renamed Permit Class.
4
About this carrier building question. 5 or 6 hulls are nice, but where are the pilots and planes? Aircraft production is not reaching a peak till mid war. Pilot training takes maybe a year? The USN and USMC can't fill those air groups in pre war conditions.
4
Greece is the "Crazy Cat Lady" Navy. Stray ships from everywhere. 😼
4
@redtob2119 1. Most other nations were not into surface raiding. That is the main mission of Pocket BB's. 2. They could build full sized instead.
4
The Delaware river bottom till recently was only 35 to 40 ft. The Brooklyn yard had bridge clearance issues. Mare Island, I think have drydocks about the same size as Philly.
4
@EdAtoZ Utah has its own memorial. Still there.
4
It is probably the smallest vessel we've done a 5-minute guide on?
4
@Boreas74 Merchant ships have known routes. The Fleet would avoid them. Also the fleet used a storm to hide in on the way to Hawaii. Yes, they would sink any Merchant ship with a radio.
4
So great quality control is a Russian shipbuilding tradition of a century plus?😏
4
There is some truth there. https://youtu.be/1yAahSUiXt4
4
@jeff53494 You do not want smoke not interfering with flight operations. Both designs are to keep minimal smoke from interfering with your landing approach view.
4
@ZurLuften the short and simple answer to that question is, Normandy is well within the range of land-based aircraft.
4
That would be Commander Eugene Esmonde. RN of Fleet Air Arm Squadron 825. Commanding. Awarded the Victoria Cross posthumously for gallantry in this battle.
4
The Ohio has the better sonar.
4
@lawrencewestby9229 taking Midway is not hard. Holding it is. You're talkin about a place has no High Ground or Jungle. No natural water source. Limited defense Force. As for Guadalcanal? If the Allies lose Midway? Hard to pull off Guadalcanal at all.
4
Since you're Brazilian, perhaps you could tell us whom this is named for? 🤔
