Seriously? š This is 2019? Seen much of modern Japan? And pay for the defense of Japan?? US forces are there for our political policy reasons. The JSDF is the 3rd biggest force in Asia. That fact they have spent that time defending Tokyo from Godzilla and Mothra; is due to the Constitution and the sea change of Pacifism. We the USA are there because of location. We spent the Cold War fighting hot wars in Korea and Vietnam. And backed Taiwan over the Mainland. Ask the residents of Okinawa? They wish the Yanks would leave.

Yes! Naval ships then and now carry small arms. And actually ship boarding is back as a active activity. While most weapons are for ship security. Many are used in counter piracy and counter drug operations. This is called VBSS duty. https://youtu.be/0vXJFU4h7DM

Ā @bkjeong4302Ā would you prefer she wind up like the Texas today?
4
Ā @sirrlivĀ I wish they would slap some torpedoes in that thing and end that mess. It's like watching my Mom brain dead. Let it go ...
4
It wasn't really much of a carrier force at the end of the Midway battle. Basically Enterprise Wing beat up. Yorktown not operating. And Hornet's wing gone.
4
āĀ @bkjeong4302Ā aren't you throwing in the small monkey wrench of Coal versus oil fuel? ā½ Is your World War II ship supportable?
4
š So in other words this has nothing to do with the Jonas Brothers? I thought it was named for their mom or something? āµ
4
I think this was asked like two weeks ago? You are just basically looking at silhouette book. They weren't close enough for an accurate identification. Nor was it particularly relevant who got credit for shooting at you at the time.
4
Ā @kkupsky6321Ā we would call a ship in that position as, "capsized."
4
Ā @WaldherzĀ Okay, before going off the rails...... Intelligence and planning were looking at war in 1942. Thus the moves of men and equipment to the Philippines. Nobody was thinking about a attack on Hawaii in December. Nor did they know where the fleet was. Vietnam was not a civil war. South Vietnam was a independent nation and ally. The Gulf of Tonkin is a mixed bag event. But not the way you portray.
4
Ā @allangibson8494Ā just reinforcing the point I made. No one really plans out Wars that far or long. We would be hard-pressed to engage anyone in serious War right now in 2024.
4
Ā @karlvongazenberg8398Ā As a Carrier, a naval aviator would be more fitting. Ensign Jesse Brown would have been fitting. https://youtu.be/Cuo1sia2-EI
4
I'm waiting for Harry and William to just go out behind the castle, take off the ties and throw down. The brother fist fight is overdue.
4
Ā @marvinthemartian9584Ā if you look on YouTube there's entire videos on this subject. Short answer? Poor performance versus other aircraft. Handling issues. The ability of other aircraft to deliver ordinance. In general, Curtiss-Wright made a lot of crap.
4
Well when you're smoking unfiltered Luck Strikes three packs a day; what's a little plutonium? š¬š¤
4
That narrative is false. But keeps getting repeated. You also while trying to hang one man; give Admiral Admiral Hart and General Brereton a pass.
4
Ā @michaelpiatkowskijr1045Ā again, false narrative. Aircraft were put into the air. Not that they were very good or large number. Nor did they have much of a functioning radar system. The aircraft were caught on the ground because they had to refuel. And air operations were the responsibility of the Air Force Commander.
4
Like? Country Rap? Or Sushi flavored Ice cream?
4
Ā @MrDirigibleĀ Now,now.....š, the Man has a valid point. While not in the top 10 of bleeping things, it is not very nice.
4
Ā @lostpony4885Ā actually hitting something is even better.
4
Ā @DrachinifelĀ True. Brave, but a barn door accurate bunch.
4
Or.... Perhaps you need a hearing test? The volume is fine.
4
Ā @seth1422Ā The Ranger & Wasp did have limited operations in the Eastern Atlantic and Med. And survived.
4
Ā @seth1422Ā "Wildcat vs. ME109F" The Wildcat , although faster and more maneuverable than the sea hurricane, it was still some 60 mph slower than the German fighter. The lower the altitude the less the odds favored the me-109 f. The Wildcat also had a heavier punch to deliver. Verdict: as a dog Fighter the Wildcat was superior to the me-109 f, but the initiative always lay with the German because of superior performance. At low altitudes the me-109 had the edge over the Wildcat but not by much. "Wildcat vs. ME 110" The me 110 C, with his inferior performance with find it difficult to escape the wildcats' attentions. A beam or flat astern attack by the powerfully armed Wildcat was likely to meet with success, the German forced to rely on the rear Gunner for survival. Verdict: the me-110 C would be unlikely to survive an encounter with a wildcat, and only a lucky hit could stop the latter."- from "Duels in the Sky" by, Captain Eric Brown, RN page 66. So I give the USN a fair chance. In UK hands, they fared well vs. Both German and Italian aircraft. And did as well if better then Sea Hurricanes or Fulmar Squadrons.
4
Ā @wesleyjohnson3786Ā The Germans vs. The Royal Navy in East Africa during WW1 comes close.
4
Ā @rogersmith7396Ā actually in the mid 50s a lot of the Essex class got conversions.
4
British Invasion tour minus the Beatles & Stones? š
4
Uh, correction needed Sir. Captain Fleming, was a Marine Corps Naval Aviator. And for his sacrifice, Earned the Medal of Honor. https://youtu.be/gSXfT3y5BNY
4
Uss Wahoo.
4
āĀ @John.0zĀ It was a time of technological Mouse versus mouse trap. Both sides kind of went down different rat holes. The Air Force played around with escort Fighters, parasite Fighters, and finally in-flight refueling. Then they thought if they can't beat them, they'll try and outrun them. And that lasted, until someone came up with the surface-to-air missile.
4
āĀ @WindHaze10Ā you still face the problems that all German Navy surface ships do. Limited access to the Atlantic. No overseas bases other than captured ones in Norway or France. Few escorts or support vessels. Having a bigger ship and bigger guns doesn't change much.....
4
I think we can blame James Bond for this torpedo question. I vaguely remember in," You only live twice" that they try this in the harbor at Hong Kong.
4
5 min guide to X Craft submarines? š¤ Pretty please, with sugar on top. š©
4
Ā @ligh7foo7Ā the order to abandon ship had already been given. Anyone still aboard was trapped below deck.
4
Ā @scottgiles7546Ā there was an entire live chat just Wednesday...
4
Slightly? š Understatement of the day. Hard to do as they have yet to give many details to this day. Even exact casualties.
4
Ā @kyle857Ā Ha ha you jest? The Zumwalt is stealthy, and that is about it.
4
āĀ @MonkeyJedi99Ā having worked with school kids daily, I can kind of picture this.
4
Ā @randomthings7898Ā the simple fact is that Subs are faster at least on the surface. A type IX U-Boat can do about 18 to say 20 knots. A liberty ship can only max out about 11 nautical miles per hour. These ships are traveling in Convoy. So you're basically traveling at the speed of the slowest vessels. Plus in rough weather oh, it's hard to maintain high speed. Also the submarines are working in ambush. They are located in Patrol Zones along the line of travel trying to intercept. Attacking at night on the surface. They'll be hard to spot.
4
I guess this Jersey Shore has nobody named, Snooki? š
4
The priority was internal expansion. If you're going to settle the West; you're not going to spend money on a Navy. Until we started getting into the empire business, really wasn't much need for it.
4
Ā @ArcticTemperĀ nothing. People overrate missiles. And Hood has armor.
4
A all sub navy doesn't get you far. And they act as a decoy to the Home Fleet. The RN has to keep tons ships at Scapa flow to guard against raiders. Ships that could have been in action, elsewhere.
4
I believe Drach did months ago?
4
You could do a battle in Detroit today and nobody would notice.
4
In Naval news. After a year, the missing Argentine Navy sub San Juan has been located finally.
4
Multiple decks are for wedding cakes. Not Carriers.....šš°
4
That is one hell of a time machine you guys are using? So.... who gets placed on Mt. Rushmore? Since Roosevelt never becomes president of the USA in this univerese.
4
More Monty Python logic. Witches burn because they are made of wood.š¤£
4
Ā @isaacsolomon9908Ā Short answer? Great Depression cuts defense spending. No ships get built. Development moves elseware.
