Second, I never said these old F-16s were a good platform. Third, only one who needs to cope are Zetas on day 1,000 of their 3-day war as their own country gets invaded.

  13. The Russians made crazy claims about the S-400, which has performed poorly and they actually really invested heavily in that and have gotten to refine it through actual use. Meanwhile, the Su-57 didn’t get 5% as much investment as the F-35, their pilots suck and Russia has done basically no real world combat with the Su-57. Their claimed specs are probably double real world reality. The Russian jet is trying to be a 3rd/4th gen hot rod with a slight use of LO while the F-35 truly is LO with an amazing sensor suite.

  17. I’m always skeptical off how well sanctions can actually be enforced on stuff like parts with the exception of parts that are only purchased by a few dozen companies. Anything purchased by hundreds let alone thousands of entities would seem impossible to police without massively restrictive controls on even domestic sales.

  28. Material sciences are almost always 99% of the challenge/limiting factor. The rest is a comparative breeze. There are so many exotic materials (many that have been around for 75+ years) I can’t believe aren’t in more products. I think it’s because so many people aren’t aware they exist. Particularly the ones that aren’t super expensive to produce.

  30. @ Equal in setting up a production line. It didn’t include R&D. Common sense tells us producing an aircraft whose design is 100% complete + compatible w/existing ordnance would be a few billion cheaper at least. Not to mention faster. It also doesn’t include the cost of learning how to fly the new aircraft, training née maintainers, etc. and a thousand other little things that add up.

I’d like to see a source saying they routinely take “16” F-15s since I doubt any but the largest ever red flag exercises have 15 F-15s of any type flying in them. If even that many.

  39.  @Turbulent-galaxy Let us know when China catches up with engine power + efficiency American jet engines have literally had since the ‘80s. By the time they finally do, the US will be using far more advanced engines again. I don’t even say this to belittle China. They didn’t start trying to build engines until after 2000. It takes a long time to build up the institutional knowledge and infrastructure. Even Europe isn’t building anything as advanced either.

  41. Well, it depends. Are we talking MMA or multi-role fighters? Anyone who’s shot a gun, can imagine how difficult it’d be to ever hit another aircraft in a modern dogfight. I’d rather have extra range or missiles.

Produce your airplanes to beat a foe with triple the capabilities you imagine it could possibly possess and you’ll have a dominant platform for decades and at least an excellent platform for 50+ years.

  50. Of course, ideally you do both. Keep producing and developing planes like the F22 while developing the new thing. If we hadn’t spent nearly a trillion dollars on MRAPS (which we have been PAYING to destroy and dispose of for years now) and trying to nation building in countries any halfway educated person could have told you would never work, we could have a few thousand F-22s in the air.
