I like the mom's trick using 2 chopsticks to squeeze the last of the stuff out of that envelope. I usually fold it in half and squeeze with my thumb and fingers, which is not that good.

I love how they arrive on bicycles with their parents and really the food looks fresh and healthy. I don't see any fat people either. We aren't allowed to mention fat here in the US but it is not healthy.

Awww....Aiko conducts herself like a proper lady at all times, so cute.
634
Did anybody notice how Greg changed his shirt like 50 times? I think that was supposed to be a joke because he brought it up in the beginning, his fashion sense has been heightened.

Being respectful of others should be taught sooner than later.

Depending on how far back you go, we are all mutts.

Factually and sensitively done video, yet not over the top with sentimentality. (Not a slew of sob stories, just an honest look at reality) Perfect balance here Greg. Also, I loved the pacing of the video as well, slow enough without being boring. I assume that was your wife doing the interviews, she has such a pretty and calming voice, seemed like the people were opening up to her for that reason. It is heartening to see how empathetic you both are, I saw that in the "Ramen Guy" episode as well.

Actually Shin didn't do that bad of a job, Dad should have told him to clean up the kitchen (or something) while he was waiting on the buns, he doesn't have that much patience yet. At least he wouldn't have left the kitchen and could keep an eye on them, Japanese seem too reliant on setting timers and technology in general. He would have smelled them burning. That was the lesson: don't get distracted.
245
I wonder how they deal with discipline or tantrums.
193
Looks like Aiko is right, "cool and cool". No offense to Greg but the mum must be beautiful, both those kids are very good looking and they seem to behave well.
168
I would hate that "reaction TV thing". It is like American sit-com "laugh tracks" or "canned laughter", taken to a highest level. It is patronizing and yes I could go off on a rant about that as well.
159
"Little Sister" was not the mum. The dad admits he can't cook, whereas, the mum knows what she is doing. In fact I am sure their mother wasn't even there. All in all a cute vid. I wish Greg would do another vid like this but his wife calling the shots, and showing the kids behind the scenes.

Now this is my idea of a luxury chill weekend: lay around, take a long hot soak, eat delicious food, rinse and repeat. This reminds me of the Ancient Roman baths, or how they are described. Do you work out? No "dad bod" on you, and don't worry didn't see "ya bum". I bet you felt GREAT after this.
132
Great vid as usual. Interesting, it seems like they take so much more care in the food preparation than in the U.S. One question: what does "buddin" mean? (joke)
129
Nobody else on Youtube makes videos like this, NOBODY and I appreciate them. I would love to see how you go to the grocery store and especially since you don't have a car. This seems like it would be a huge task but obviously you have a way of accomplishing that. Thanks again.

They come to your house and look around??? Really? This just sounds crazy.

Props to Greg for covering ALL parts of life realistically. The rich and the poor, the young and the old, the highs and the lows, etc. AND everything else in between. I never know what to expect. Great vid, but a little short, but I always say that. Thank you Greg.

This would encourage people not to buy things with an EXCESS amount of packaging! That is a big problem here in the U.S. Manufacturers love to add extra to make the products look bigger. A lot of items can be bought with no packaging or you could just bring your own reusable bag.
72
It would be great to see/hear Miss Aiko voice over an entire film. Some films, she does much of the talking anyway, and from her perspective. Maybe when school is out this summer she would have time? This time, give her a chance to collect her thoughts or even write a script.
59
EVERYBODY in the world should have to go to this once every 2 months, as a basic human right. Imagine the reduction in crime and mental illness alone! Make it a LAW. I just watched this for the 5th time as a fantasy. BTW, how did the kids like it?
48
Who knows, but yeah they are both cute kids. More importantly, like their parents they will grow to be good people. Again, I don't know about the mum but Greg just seems like great guy and if he lived next door, I would probably be friends with him. Do you get that impression too? That and his talent are the success of his channel.
43
IKR. Greg has got to be the most realistic and pleasant guy on YouTube. Also the most interesting high quality videos. Relaxing and fun, that is the magic of LWIF!
42
I have been waiting for this video since I wondered about topic and this was a thorough explanation. Thanks. BTW, if anybody else made this same video, it would have been boring! Maybe not for young kids, but very interesting to me.
41
These houses lack personality for me, although they are nice. They don't seem very Japanese either. I hope you will be doing a video on the very cheap older houses there.
39
"A bunch of bored people going around" Ha, HA!
38
Do these concrete and steel houses retain their value?
35
Since Aiko is a natural host, she connects with the audience. She is probably the entire reason for the success of the channel because you just have to love her.
32
Honestly, I think Shin is aware that he "in an entertainment video", so he goes to his "entertainment mode". His idea of "video" and "entertainment" are those video games he plays and Japanese TV. He hops around and makes weird noises because that's exactly what they do. So he is basically putting on a show when he knows the camera is on him. Nothing wrong with him, he is just a little boy, who just doesn't get it, yet. He does interrupt his dad, which is just bad manners. The dad probably hates to cramp his style, since he believes the Japanese conform too much.

Great video here with a beginning middle and end and of course interesting look BTS of a small restaurant in Japan. The filming and editing were your professional grade standards as well. I hear that people who buy electronics want a instruction manual on video instead of boring booklet, have you ever made a video for a product? I thought of you when I heard owners videos were getting more mainstream. Your wife was into the filming, direction, editing with this one right? So how did your wife like helping you make this video, since she was involved in all aspects and who watched the kids? Did Mrs. X become very interested and want to do more or did she say never ever again? Whatever, you have admit that the result was better than if you did it all alone. Like you said in a past video, you are lucky to have the type of work to actually have a huge family life. Sadly most people do not and this poor guy doesn't have much at all, it doesn't seem. Why do you think he has such a hard time finding part time workers? I would think that there would be some retired people to work here. (Like the movie "Sweet Bean") We loved this one Greg, thanks.
30
The fact that you buy a new modern house in Japan and it doesn't come with central heat or AC, I think is weird.
28
So Dad and Mum finally broke down and got them not one but 2 cats?
26
Japan will NOT buy any of the GMO wheat or grains from the U.S. I think they know something we don't. I often wonder if this is not the reason people are obese here.
24
What a wonderful place to just stroll around. Did you go into the springs? BTW, 52 degrees C = 130 degrees F.
22
They seem to be learning to like the right kinds of foods and don't seem to be picky eaters.
22
That sounds like a bad school.
21
Greg your wife and kids should just refuse to talk to you in English, and when you talk to them in English, they shouldn't respond. If want to connect you will have to do it in Japanese. Hang out with John Daub and speak ONLY Japanese! Somebody like him understands why YOU don't understand. With native speakers, just spit it out! They can tell you are trying and even most of the time will help you. You seem too critical of yourself and afraid. Just jump in the sea of Japanese and know you are going to mess up more than you get it right. You will thrash around but they will never let you drown. Get over your fear and apprehensions and dive right in and your best is going to have to be good enough.
21
Yeah, Yuta, my SLOVAK grandma from a little village there, made these almost EXACTLY the same. No mayo though, but a bit of milk maybe. Maybe some garlic if you have it. To me, these are better than a "hambuga", even better grilled.
21
I do not believe it is the GOVERNMENT'S place to dictate what people eat. Only keep the free market to provide healthy food at a reasonable cost. Please keep educating because every advertisement pushes some junk or another. (I turned my TV off) At some point people need to take full responsibility for what they eat. You cannot blame anybody else.
20
If I did that, there would be grease all over and the smoke alarm would go off constantly. Your wife must have a special touch for doing it. Looks like a good idea though. Do most people do this in Japan?
20
They POST the noise level of the construction zones? If they get too loud then do they tell them to be quiet?
17
The bucket and dipper method save allot of water probably but seems like it doesn't rinse that well. Maybe they just use less soap?
11
@ Sarah Swailes That my dear, is the tip of the month! Like somebody else said, "Why didn't I think of that"? Thank you so much! Cheetos are the worst offender but really you could do that with greasy popcorn, stuff like that.
11
Greg, how are you doing with your Japanese? It sounded like you were actually talking to that homeless guy. Did you have an interpreter? As always your vids are often much better than most of what I see televised. Great work....again.
11
Right fast food is the WORST. But it seem the less I eat of it the less I crave it. I have found that with a little smart shopping cooking at home is always cheaper, you just need to learn how to do it.
9
Greg I have been wondering about you. Great movie AGAIN. Only thing is that I feel like you crammed too much info into this short film and I would have loved it to be much longer. Before you say it, your videos are never boring to me, but always interesting. So NO, it wold not have been too long. BTW, This seem more geared toward adults, should it not be in your X channel?
9
I know or have know 3 Muslim dudes, that I know of. All three were better than great guys! All three are kind, HUMBLE, hard working, and men of HONOR. Does anybody know what an HONORABLE man is? I asked all three about shootings and bombing, they said these were just mentally ill people. SHRUG, not what I see in the "media".
9
It seems there are not enough open spaces for me. Even the few small yards around the houses would make a difference. The Japanese don't seem to ever sit and relax in a nice quiet peaceful place, do they? Their minds must be constantly in high gear. I wonder....
8
Sorry, yeah I think you are right. And I think she was the one that burned the first ones! We all have an "off day". Still my point is that ALL parents should teach the kids (boys and girls) how to cook. If nothing else it teaches multi-tasking and paying attention...OR everybody has to literally EAT your mistakes. You can't really say that the stove burned my burgers, no, YOU burned the burgers! These are common sense life skills and I wish Greg would do another video.
8
John Daub, you freaked me out when you rode your bicycle over that bridge on your channel. GEEZ! You were lucky that you weren't killed. I hope you don't do that again.
7
I know that planting a diversity of species is the biological way to go. Just two species is irresponsible. I am sure they know that now. One other reason is that if a natural plague kills off one species, the others will take over. In the 40's-50's every American street was planted with elms, it was beautiful and tempered the microclimates, then the 'dutch elm disease', now nothing.
