  5.  @skullofserpent5727  These 6.8x51 rounds are 80% HEAVIER than 5.56. SIGs "20% lighter" claim comes from the fact that their composite round is that much lighter compared to a conventional case. It's not 20% lighter than the current M855A1 5.56 round. The SIG 6.8x51 mm round weighs 24 grams. The 7.62x51 mm M80A1 (our current issue) weighs 24 grams. In other words, the 6.8 weighs exactly the same as 7.62, Where's the weight savings?

  7.  @ronaldmcdonald3965  It wasn't a whistleblower. It was an air force officer, and he was hired for that job. They made a movie about it. There's nothing wrong with the armor. It does what's it's designed to do- stop rounds up to light cannon, artillery fragments, and RPGs. It's not a tank and can't withstand large EFPs any more than it can take 125mm APFSDS from a T80.

  24.  @borderreiver1806  Maybe. AP isn't the only consideration. It's also range, payload capacity in the bullet, and excellent intermediate barrier penetration. Trees, cars, buildings, concrete, sand bags, etc. .50 doesn't shoot onto things, it shoots through them while exploding or lighting it on fire. Ours were very effective in Iraq, and in Afghanistan the CRWS practical made it a 1500 meter sniper system.

  26.  @ParrotTactical  Yeah the X95 and AUGA3 are both very good rifles. About 10 inches shorter than an M4. That's important when you have a full time 6 inch suppressor on the muzzle.

  27.  @m1garandMUSIC  Yeah I get what the intent is, but I doubt it works out well. Even 40x53mm isn't great on even lightly armored vehicles. The hole made by them is tiny and doesn't have much effect if it gets through. The only reason a grenade machine gun would be a threat to light armor is that you can shoot it 20 or 30 times. Grenades also have a huge amount of wind drift and spin drift. They fly off course easily. They don't fly to the target nearly as well as you'd think. Even a bushmaster 25mm has pretty bad drift at 1000 meters, and it's pushing 3X the muzzle velocity of these grenades. The US abandoned this concept for several reasons. Inaccuracy, lack of sufficient effect on target, excessive weapon weight, and expense were the main ones. We have put our efforts into the M3E1 Carl Gustaf for this role, instead. The weapon weighs 1/3 as much, has the aid of computerized sights including a laser range finder, has more economically sound ammo, is more accurate, better range, and hits way harder. It's also more flexible and every light infantry platoon has two in the weapons squad. The Goose can fire HE, HEDP, Airburst, incendiary, HEAT, tandem HEAT, flechette, rocket assisted, smoke, illumination, and even laser guided missiles. Rounds range from 7 to 10 pounds, with effective ranges from 500 meters out to 2500 meters. The Chinese have nothing like it. The HE 448 round is a real monster. You can wipe out a whole squad in the open or in defilade at a km with an airburst. Other rounds can knock out drones, troops, armor (including tanks), and bunkers. Before long, SAAB will also have a loitering munition round with a 10 km range. It's amazing. This Chinese weapon has little utility and doesn't seem worth the weight for what it offers.

  28. The SKS is a fantastic weapon, especially in places like south east Asia. Stripper clips are cheaper, and a lot can be carried. More accurate than the AK, more velocity and range. Reasonably short and lightweight. Very reliable and durable. Decent sights and trigger. The only real disadvantage us the lower rate of fire, but in the sustained role that has less importance.

  34.  @MrTangolizard  This round is has almost double the chamber pressure as 5.56, which means it will have a significantly larger muzzle blast. There's a reason every picture of these guns includes a suppressor- its has to. I'd be willing to bet this round is as loud suppressed as 5.56 is unsuppressed. Especially with that 13" barrel they have on it. If anything, this ammo would increase those disability claims is from weight- it's double that of 5.56.

  35.  @wigon  A heat round contacts the armor before detonation. An EFP doesn't. Compare a rocket warhead, that must fly towards the target, impact it and inject a jet of hot plasma, to an EFP which of s a bomb that fires a hot spike of hot copper. Saying they are the same is like saying a 120mm HEAT warhead is the same as APFSDS. They are not.

  36.  @aLoanWolf  We don't really need am adjustable gas system, though I'd prefer a mid length block. We have ambi safeties on the M4A1. I add a magpul catch to the bolt catch and it works great. Overall, I'd like to see the Block 2 used by SOCOM the combat arms standard.

  37. @Nicholas Rodriguez Disagree. It's not much different than the 5.45x39 the Russians use, or the 5.8x42 the chinese use. Same concept.the M855A1 and MK262 MOD 1 we've been using the last decade greatly increase it's capabilities. The M4A1 and it's current ammo aren't outclassed by any modern assault rifle currently fielded in any real measurable sense. Much of the talk of troops being outgunned center around facing crew served guns like PKM. That's a nonsense aregumrnt, as we have machineguns, too.

If you haven't, when are you joining up? If you're do interested in these weapons, why not join up and carry one? Considering the 30 pounds of armor, 25 pounds of organizational equipment, and 30-60 pounds of weapons and ammo we already carry, I'm sure you'd volunteer to carry the extra weight for a s all in heavier ammo. Since this ammo is twice the weight, I'm sure you'd have no problem lugging it for extended patrols. When are you enlisting?

  39.  @zhufortheimpaler4041  Well, these weapons sure are used outside the parameters you describe. Combat isn't that clean cut. Gustavs have everything fr HE to airburst, to incindiary ammo. We used them in Afghanistan to defeat ambushing PKMs. These weapons aren't just uses to fire at bunkers.

  40. 7:45 you're 100% correct on that. Sensors and sights are the advantage of vehicles in the 21st century. They're much heavier optics than a man could carry, and are much more effective. Overwatch while bounding is their strong point. The very first layer of the threat onion is to not be detected.

  41.  @Matteo_  As far as I know, Russia has continued to produce 7.62 ammo this whole time and still issue 7.62 AKs in certain units. They also produce them in 5.56. I haven't seen any evidence of the Russians scrapping the light rifle concept of the AK12 for a battle rifle. In fact, they're fielding both a brand new rifle and SAW in 5.45.

  42.  @Kross8761  You've been misled. No, they aren't even trying with AKs at 800. They're using 7.62x54r PKMs at that range. Usually that entails firing 200-250 rounds cyclic all over the place and not hitting anyone. I've experienced it many times there in RC East. In a typical platoon sized dismounted element in AFG, we typically had 2x M240 machine guns with tripods, 1x M3 Carl Gustav, 1x M224 60mm mortar, and 3x mk14 Designated Marksman rifles. That plenty of long range firepower to counter a PKM. What we don't want is an entire platoon focusing on one contact. Leaders have to immediately break the tunnel vision of their troops and get 360 degree security, with a concentration on shorter range security. Opening up with an MG is a great way to get an opponent focussed on that threat while you flank them. We know this. Many troops won't even be tasked to face the event, but will be watching the flanks and rear. The last thing we want is a whole platoon trying to shoot at one contact or they will get rolled up.

  44.  @cptclonks7279  Considering that the Russian military is corrupt and lazy, I'd say that the maintenance aspect is vital. Having technology rotting in fields doesn't exactly build combat power. From the looks of it, Russian tanks can be killed by climbing on top of them and throwing a grenade into the turret.

  47.  @duanemckinley9353  The suppressor is probably going to have to be full time. The blast from a 10" 5.56 gun is already like a flash bang in the face. This has 80K chamber pressure with a 13" barrel. The blast is tremendous. Fully loaded, this gun is 13.5 pounds. You think that's small? With the suppressor, it's 9 inches longer than the M4A1. The folding stock is nice. Of course, it's not really usable when folded. Most people are going to see a 39 inch, 13.5 pound weapon as huge, because it is.

  48.  @rijoenpial  I've never heard a soldier complain that the M4 is too long indoors. It only really becomes so when suppressed. I don't think anyone would describe the AK as too long for CQB, and the M4 is shorter.

  50. How do you think that has any more "stopping power" over FMJ? The only difference is that the military rounds penetrate soft body armor. No 9x39 round is meant to expand or fragment and will make a hole straight through, exactly like a 9x19mm FMJ bullet.
