The fact that it was marked as "Wauser" is absolutely adorable.

I've always been a fan of the Calico, even if it is jam-happy. I love futuristic looking guns. It's a shame most of them came out of the 80's and 90's, because we definitely need more like them.
392
@vtphynx My dad was in the Army and called them jarheads.
277
Neat. Although I'll never own a Webley, shaved or otherwise, I love that a company would make such ownership easier in this way.
64
Definitely love that fun mode. I think if they just had a larger magazine it could've been a real competitor as an SMG.
37
It makes me sad when any gun manufacturer shuts down operations, no matter who it's for.
32
@Matt-xc6sp Indeed, and I really appreciate when he goes over the functionality of the guns. Seeing how they solved certain issues in the past can be quite handy.
24
I wonder if it's the only time it's ever happened.
23
Or he would have if he could forget things.
22
@KasperMcKay Of course. Trigger safety at all times.
21
Hopefully no one tries to put out another "smart" gun, but if they do, I hope someone sues the snot out of New Jersey for that unconstitutional law.
19
Interesting piece of history. It's kind of sad what has happened to China.
18
This is a pretty cool gun. I love the disassembly, especially the captive pin. We need more designs like this, although, yeah, the safety was definitely upside down.
17
I love when designers use captive nuts, bolts, pins and springs. Even if it's just that one, still cool. I also love when they make what I've come to call a cascade construction. Where each new piece locks in the previous with just one final piece that threads on or clips or something.
16
I love the simplicity of its construction and wish a more modern take on this could come to fruition that retained that simplicity.
15
Ironically, if it didn't have the "smart" components I think it might make for a really good CC gun. It's pretty smooth all the way around so it wouldn't snag so easily on clothing or your jeans. Has a DA trigger so you could theoretically carry it with one in the chamber and that cross trigger bar safety would be harder to accidentally hit in your pocket but still easy for you to manipulate one handed. Plus the grip safety.
15
I'd wager the other two are both correct. Lighter and cooler barrel with more surface area, and it just looks cool too.
13
Sure, but they're still cool. Especially the KSG.
12
@nate665 I do believe you're right, because Ian has called himself an engineering nerd in the past.
12
Maybe we can see more of that if the GCA and NFA and all the rest get repealed.
11
Can't forget how stylish he looked too.
11
Controversial opinion here: the Luty SMG is beautiful. I love that design, it just needs a bit of streamlining here and there. Perhaps a better mag release, but otherwise, it's a pretty gun.
10
@Vemppu_Lutku Van Helsinki?
10
I would absolutely love to see Ian do a serious retrospective on Super Soakers. Review, take apart, shoot at the range. "I'm not saying it's a pissing contest, but this Super Soaker shoots farther."
10
That's why I love captive springs.
10
@TacticsTechniquesandProcedures There is a difference between fair use and outright infringement, though. Most I've seen are not infringing, but still get strikes.
10
Interesting little guns. I wonder why they'd change the typeface on the "U.S. Property" stamp. I would think it'd be cheaper to always use the same one since they were clearly invested in making them cheaper with later iterations.
9
That is pretty sweet. I love a lot of the engineering that went into this, especially as I dislike the AR15 buffer tubes.
9
Fascinating history. Blows all the anti-gun arguments out of the water considering they were developing this technology back in the 1500's.
9
Yeah, some Tubers have a lot of influence in that way. Wouldn't be surprised if it went up 10 fold.
9
Indeed, it was a thing of beauty.
8
Really makes me wish I had a time machine and a few bricks of gold. I'd love to preserve all these bits of history that get tossed aside because of fear.
8
@imilliemedina666 Having never met her, I couldn't say for certain, but probably a good trade given the state of the world.
7
I'd expect to see more SMG's in future wars. Gun knowledge has progressed a bit in the past 100 years and hopefully more people would be able to figure out Luty-style improvisation.
7
What are the rules regarding the gun you can use? Could you use a P90? Would the longer barrel of the civilian variant be okay? How about if a gun was home-built as opposed to just being a kit of some kind?
7
@platonicincubi1679 I think where I fell in love with the FAMAS was when I first played Metal Gear Solid for the PlayStation 1.
7
@user-hh3ge8yr1t They are pretty cool, but I think from a practical standpoint, the P90 mags already function well and 50 isn't half bad for a limit.
7
The problem with "smart" gun tech is that if it's simple enough to not prevent the user from using it when needed then it's simple enough that a thief can easily make it work for them. And if it's complex enough that a thief can't make it work for them, then it'll prevent the authorized user from using it to defend either their life or others lives in adverse conditions, even if it's just one time, and be completely useless. There is no perfect solution, but the solution which allows the owner to use their gun without impediment and protect people from harm most easily is the best.
7
@mottee Guns are never off topic, no matter what propellant they use. :)
7
@darwinism8181 They want to change the laws relating to firearms. It's the very definition of political.
7
Twenty-second'ed.
7
@graymeeple9620 Mmm, cheese covered tanks.
7
Agreed, poor grips, but still really cool. I'd like to see someone refine the design of the P90 because I think it comes closest to what I think would be the perfect PDW.
7
Ramen noodles are good, and cheap. Add eggs and chopped up meat and it's a proper meal. Then you could afford more guns.
6
@DB-yj3qc You meant anti-Goa'uld, but hell yeah. The P90 is the best!
6
He looks right at home shooting anything. From a Barrett all the way down to a Derringer.
6
@happysalesguy That would be a general argument for why you think they shouldn't exist. I was speaking to the arguments about historical precedent regarding what types of firearms to allow. 600 is a lie of a figure because the term mass is highly subjective and they've constantly subjected it to abuse to claim more and more shootings as mass shootings. The majority of what they claim has nothing to do with guns anyway, as it's gang activity, which would happen just as much with only knives and other countries stats prove that. Suicides make up two thirds of the stats on firearm related deaths and nothing anyone says will convince me those wouldn't have happened without guns existing. Accidents aren't the fault of the gun either, nor are any murders. Does a gun make it easier to murder someone? Yeah. Does that mean we should strip the rights of everyone for an ultra minority of deaths? No. Aside from in general it being evil to take rights from people, such as the right to self defense by any means within their reach, there is always the fact that guns have saved just as many, if not more, lives than they've taken.
6
@GeorgeWashingtonLaserMusket Agreed. I'd love to legally own a full auto gun. Not that I own any illegally, because my entire collection was lost in an unfortunate boating accident.
6
I'd love to time travel to those times and see how they made guns back then. It's hard to imagine that they could machine things without widespread electric grids, although electricity and generators did exist, whether they used them or not.
6
@dwaneanderson8039 Yeah, that's a bit late to the game to have primitive weapons.
