  6. To truely appreciate Gawain's character, you have to go back to the older versions where he's still pagan. In those, he serves as another foil to Morgan la Fay, putting aside his religious differences and focusing on the shared values of chivalry to work together with Arthur and the knights for the good of the realm. Of course, once that element is removed, and you get a bunch of paragons added (deminishing the whole "good people trying to live up to an even greater ideal" theme), he becomes less interesting. Oh, I'd be remiss to not post a link to this song about him and the green knight. Some liberties are taken with the narrative, but as the story is rather inconsistent from the versions I've seen and the original version of Gawain has been flattened with his Christianization, I'm cool with it (and it's a fun one). https://youtu.be/O7Fa1B7cAGE

  8. I've a good bit of l sympathy for Scottish people right now. My understanding is the last vote for Scottish independence only narrowly failed because they wanted to remain part of the EU, only for Brexit to happen based almost entirely on the voting swinging pro-Brexit in England, which is what they wanted independence from in the first place. Not as rough as the situation in Ireland (which seems to be a pattern) but it still seems like an unpleasant situation to say the least even by my admittedly limited understanding.

  9. HeWhoDwells to be fair, it's possible a politically-minded enough person could have made that work by making each title and authority style seperate for each region. As for his "Megas" epithet, part of me wonders if it's dual-meaning of "great" (as in excellent) and "large" may have been a bit of a double-meaning that stuck. Either as a sarcastic comment about his hight (not unlike how the connotation of Tyrion being called "half-man" changed in Game of Thrones) or a comment on another ahem attribute (there were indications he was likely Bi and in love with at least one man following him) I don't mean to be deliberately crass, but we're talking about a time that was far from prudish.

Maniacman2030 except that models of gender that aren't just male=man/female=woman can be found in plenty of societies of varrying levels of development from modern to hunter-gatherer, even in societies that do have a gender binary the roles differ significantly across time and region, intersexed people exist, we have brain scans that can show differences between cis- and transgendered individuals, behavioral and mental aptitude differences between sexes do not show clear distinctions (instead show mere tendencies), and (much like homosexuality) attempts to change how a person feels to how they look only result in negative mental health outcomes. So that means the fields anthropology, history, neurology, behavioral psychology, cognitive psychology, and psychotherapy all oppose rigid gender binaries. 6 fields of study agreeing is pretty solid support, and we have prescient for the same argument we're having today over trans-acceptance back with gay acceptance (which was also labeled as a mental disorder with some pretty horrific history of "correction treatments")

  11. Um, I think the character of Mina Harker basically entirely refutes that point. She's at least as smart as the smartest male character and without fail, whenever the men treat her as anything less than a fully equal member of the group it goes poorly. If anything, the book is arguing that women can be just as mentally capable as men if they're allowed to exercise their minds like Jonathan Harker enables his wife to do, and that men, in trying to shield them from the real world, are doing more harm than good, no matter how noble their intentions are. The total consistency which the narrative meets sexism with disaster doesn't leave any room for that interpretation of author intent.

Yup, in the universe of the fate series, Aturia (female Arthur pretending to be a man to fill the role of king, with only her closest friends and advisors knowing the truth) and marries Guinevere, a close friend, so Camelot has a queen. She learns of the love between Lancelot and Guinevere, and allows it to continue as long as it's secret as she sees the real love between them, but things go bottoms up when the affair that Arturia was pretending not to be aware of goes public. Tragic for all involved. Also, supposedly there's magic stuff at play that makes Mordred, and a LOT of other stuff, because the "original" legends (in their altered forms) are just background for the fate stories.

There's an argument that she burned with the world because she's not listed among the named survivors, but she was also not part of the battle and not high up on the world tree, to there's also a good argument that she wasn't listed among the survivors because Ragnarok never burned her realm and she is frequently not counted among the Æsir and Vanir, so it would be reasonable that she wasn't mentioned even if she survived.

  23. Red, fellow viewers, please please go watch Steins;Gate. It's an amazing handling of time travel in fiction that manages to write a very compelling story about the act of time traveling and playing with the implications of the rules and consequences of its time travel while remaining consistent and comprehensible. It is also both funny and amazingly emotional beyond the technical mastery of being able to write with such a plot premice in the first place so I cannot recommend it enough.   24. Basically every European mythology/legend that endured through the middle ages has some kind of connection to Christianity somewhere. Outside of Greco-Roman stuff, almost everything we know of European supernatural beliefs has been preserved through being either interwoven with Christian beliefs or as an account of what Christians were saying about "pegans" and their beliefs with almost every account of beliefs not making it to us by a Christian-held pen writing from a decidedly Christian perspective being erased from the historical record. The loss of knowledge is sad, but it does mean that it's not really "if" but instead "where" any supernatural tellings from Medieval Europe have ties to Christianity. Pick a subject and dig, and you will find them.

  35. Pluralism isn't a uniquely modern thing, though. Let the nationalists get their heckles up over history, as it's full of examples of cultures made stronger by not being closed-minded. The whole point of learning history is to be able to learn from it. Just because the risk of projecting our own veiws backwards onto others is ever present, doesn't mean we should look at history as just a list of names, events, and dates.

  38. I will never say Avatar is a good movie. However, I will, dispite not normally caring about a movie's visuals beyond how they further the plot, say that it was drop-dead gorgeous and I don't regret going to see it in the slightest dispite the 3d glasses giving me painful eye strain. The plot dealing with the humans was just a wrapping and a visual palette cleanser to break up the enjoyment of the finest ambrosia of eye candy.

  41. To be fair, the overall building had one, and the scale, era, and location (near a major fault line) win it some major points. Holding the record for largest dome in the world for so long (over a millennia!) next to a fault line outweighs the negative points of the more recent poor interior design and maintenance choices in my book. Best dome.

If it makes you feel better, the first full game of Crusader Kings I played to the end was when I started as a Welsh duchy, took over all of Britania before Norman and Saxon culture had time to homogenize into English culture (I kicked the Normans out). Then I went on, with nothing better to do, to win a crusade basically singlehandedly (and permanently), and do plenty of other awesome stuff to eventually end the game with more prestige in my Welsh dynasty than any of the real life benchmarks the game gives you for comparison. Good times.
