I run a water plant, I had to work 6 years ON TOP OF my bachelors to even get my license to have my job, and I could be fired tomorrow by a city council majority vote by people who are retirees making $500/month to be part time admins. My direct supervisor has never done my job for an hour in his 10 year career. the head of the LA water system, where the fires were, NEVER EVEN MADE WATER and had no treatment license, she was an engineer, zero experience. Your customers judge EVERY action you do on the job and have no relation to it. It's up to YOU to educate those people and YOU have to justify YOU.

As a municipal government worker, talking to people is the most important thing, because things happen and people connect dots, and often they make incorrect conclusions because they don't know what's actually going on, and we have to remember that. "AW, I can't believe my local government is doing (thing) WTF?! Why are they doing that?!", so you explain to them the situation, the circumstances, the thought process and plan that went into and backed that final decision that they got to see, and very often that results in that resident responding "Oh...well that makes sense then, I didn't know all that. Good job dealing with that".

  4. I had a friend in college that was a history major, specifically cold war history. I remember him taking a class that only covered the communist revolution in I think it was Romania, a VERY specific and contained period of time, one event. He said on day one the instructor told them not to buy the textbook if you didn't want to, because they would be using him as a primary source BECAUSE HE WAS THERE, he lived through it. That's real education.

That's like losing the baseball game, your score 2, theirs 3, BUT BUT BUT you got 5 more hits than them so technically...NO, all that matters is the score, not the other metrics that may be better. You get 100 hits to their 4, but you never make it to home plate and they blast 3 home runs, loss.

  25. My coworker has five autistic children, three of which are unable to speak and never have. They're almost 10 and been nonverbal their entire lives, and are expected to be for life. They require 24 hour care for even the smallest tasks. His take is like saying the kid with leukemia prayed to the wrong god.

  26. We do very little as in OUR tariffs on Canada are small by comparison. Canada has triple-digit tariffs on tons of us imports already, so f them. Makes sense why I didn't by any Canadian products lol, I saw a massive list of things that may get more expensive, I'd never even heard of any of those brands or products, probably already too expensive. And milk and cheese and butter ? Why? I live in the Midwest, if my dairy comes from another state it's too far, I get the best fresh stuff here, raw milk included. Eggs $3/dozen all day everyday, hell I can buy actual chickens for less than the coastal elite are buying eggs for.

  29. Same, and the best advice I got in college was that a degree doesn't say you're competent at anything, it only says you're able to learn. The point of college is to teach you how to learn. In my current very successful career, my degree didn't help me at all, but the PROCESS of achieving it was monumentally helpful, listening, questioning, test taking skills, all vital. All transferable.

  30. Talk to people that went to state college in the 70s and 80s. If you lived in the state, you went basically for free, that was the point. I know a guy who got his degree from Cal Berkeley in the 70s, I think he said 4 years was a total of like $7k.

  32. I had a friend in the past who dropped out of HS freshman year because he was making too much money to stay in school, forging horseshoes and shoeing horses. He was a ferier. He would work 6 months, make $100-150K CASH, then take the next 6 months enjoying spending it.

I run a water treatment plant for a city, and a MAJOR part of our distribution department is continually testing flow and pressure rates and ratings on our hundreds of fire hydrants for fire protection, BECAUSE the property insurance rates for the entire region depend on it, it's called an ISO Rating. We have some businesses that fail this testing due to whatever factors or the minimums of their carrier, and they've had to build their own small water tower for their sprinkler system to get any insurance coverage. We start having pressure/flow test issues for whatever reason, it can spike everyone's insurance rates, it's a BIG deal, and we owe our customers the best we can do. It's insane to me a regulated-to-fing-death place like LA in CA doesn't have a platinum-standard fire protection system, especially in their threat/risk environment. That's like living in Phoenix and not having air conditioning.

Imagine the prosecution brings in a professional CIA psych torturer to deliberately use manipulation tricks to get you to freak out, then showed the judge and jury look, he sperged out, it only took 18 hours of interviewing, he's bad, 20 years minimum. This is why I disagree with things like the REID method of 'questioning' (interrogation) by police. Deliberate psych manipulation is not evidence.

  37. Trump is a father figure for a lot of people. For quite a while I've appreciated his encouraging style. I've been a fan since term 1, but in that Theo Von interview where he talked extremely candidly about the tragedy of watching his older brother go through addiction and losing him, it was very endearing.

  38. SAME. I loved my job when I was lead plant operator. As plant manager it's NONE of the job that I loved, and everything I hate doing. When I started, I was like this is GREAT, no dealing with the public, working mostly alone, zero people to supervise, and no dealing with money. Guess what the f I do NOW, supervise people, go to meetings, file paperwork, do budget stress shit, and endlessly get shit from the public. I got a $2/hr raise to take that on and went from 4 days a week to 5. After 9 years here I'm looking for the exit.

  45. Guy I went to HS with graduated Harvard med, graduate work at Stanford, then practiced one year once he was licensed and transitioned to hospital admin. I asked him why do all that work to treat patients, then go sit behind a desk instead? He replied he loved helping patients one-on-one, but in administration, he can help hundreds or thousands of patients at a time, and he wants to be wherever he can do the max good.
