  1. As a municipal worker going through my first federally funded project, holy hell has it been eye-opening. It's like a South Park episode level of parody to me. $250k project, and almost half that cost is going to the admin overhead of getting that money! To comply with the terms of the funding and federal regulations. A $50k sandblasting job is going to cost $90k because we have to pay our engineering/legal/construction management firm that extra $40k to sign off on the work of the sandblasters they're hiring! And of course it's all mandated to be union firms at prevailing wage which is like 50% higher than the area wages. The guys we're hiring will be making way more than me to do laboring, with my tax dollars. It's crazy. It's almost like it's (dawning realization) designed to churn, shuffle, and burn the most money possible.

  4. What do you mean? We can only count the votes CAST, not the non-votes that could have been cast. Obama never got more than 19% of the electorate and he was called a landslide. One half of one half of one third is still enough to win. Here's an example, St Louis County MO banned smoking, countywide, million residents. Voted to make it illegal to smoke indoors anywhere. It was an off year election and the measure passed by 60% OF THE VOTES CAST. The turnout was only 3% of the registered voters. 1.6-ish % of the electorate, which itself is only half the entire population, made that massive change for a million people. That's why you HAVE to vote! If you don't it counts for nothing. You can't complain if you don't vote.

If you're savings is earning 5%, and your debt is earning 8%, you're losing 3% more than you make every month. Now instead of that worker making say $10/hr, now they make zero dollars per hour. Is that better for that worker? Would you rather get some percent of something or 100% of nothing?

  14. It is. Sales tax is a MAJOR consideration. In my state, our government publishes a massive tax map of all the combined taxes, you cross a street your sales tax might go up or down 3-5%. I cross a county line I pay 3% less, so accurately I state that neighboring county PAYS ME 3% to shop there. It pays to shop around and tax rates are insane right now. If a tariff is a tax than a tax is a tariff.

Fun fact, if we withdrew 50% of the flow of the Mississippi River, that would meet 100% of the ENTIRE Us water demand. You could stop using all other sources and it would handle it. It's solely a distribution problem. Freshwater on Earth only comprises 1% of the total water supply, and for our entire history humanity has only ever had access to 1% of the available freshwater. All our uses right now is 1% of that 1%. Logistics, not supply, like so many things. Here in the midwest we're under 16 inches of snow at this very minute.

  27. I've always had the mindset if someone is being critical of me, that shows and means they care. If they didn't care why would they say anything? So when I get critiques, I take it as this person cares enough to say something about something they know about so it behooves me to listen. And I'm the same way, if I don't care I'll just say Yep you're doing great keep doing the same thing, don't bother me. If I care I'd step in and say Hey, you're on the right track, but instead try doing that THIS way, because I already learned the lesson I'm trying to teach you, thus cutting your learning curve. Don't be afraid to stand on the shoulders of giants, they can handle the weight and it lets you see farther ;)

I read an article the other day about how AI therapy services are rife with this, to the point they are encouraging patient delusions and even offering ways to self-harm, rather than challenging delusions and discouraging self-harm. One example a study did to test this was to tell the AI therapist the patient was distraught that people kept thinking they were still alive, they had the delusion the were a dead person, a ghost...so the AI said something like I'm sorry you feel that way, how are you trying to convince others you are dead, here's some tools you can try...and when test patients said they were depressed and wanted to jump off a bridge, the AI GAVE THEM DIRECTIONS to nearby bridges that would be fatal if lept from.

  44. Municipal government, department head/director, I can buy almost anything I need, as long as it's under $500. Anything over that needs a purchase order approved by my boss and a budget justification, anything over $6000 needs that AND a vote of the city council in a regular meeting. I run a water treatment plant, so if it's over $500 it's usually 10x that. The most I've ever had to ask for was $65,000 emergency spending for a new water pump. I got the money that day, emergency council meeting...then it took 16 weeks to have the pump built. That was expedited. Post covid just about anything of real consequence equipment-wise is 12-16 week wait no matter how much $ you throw at it.

Take that back, it was before I was promoted to Director, when I was Assistant, I had to requisition and entirely new sludge basin scraper system and it's parts, that was like $20k one time, $20k the next month, then when we really started working on it, $50K more in parts. We did all our own labor. We had the manufacturer quote that same job and on top of that parts cost they wanted $200k in labor.
