  2. Yes, some of my Scottish family were driven out of Scotland at the point of a Redcoat's musket, they had to go overseas. Then there's the other side from whom the British confiscated property worth $millions in 'war reparations' even though my family members were either shot by the Nazis or thrown into concentration camps for protesting against the Nazis. The remaining family became penniless war refugees on 3 continents. Let me tell you that being a war refugee in the UK back then was brutal, no cushy hotels, no hand outs, no transport and entertainment... Can I have reparations now?

  5. I have no doubt that there will be continuing pushback against the egregious mission creep undertaken by a weak-minded gvt that gives no credence to the public's own wisdom and commonsense. Treat people like naughty kids, they behave like naughty kids. The British people are made of stronger stuff - we wouldn't have survived as free people over the past 1000 years otherwise. More and more people are beginning to talk about these issues and seem determined to counter this unsupervised rise of authoritarianism. We will return to normal.

I'm heartened that my middle of the road, middle-class adult children - although not church members - are sending their children to church schools and not putting up with the wokeist claptrap that occasionally finds its way into the classroom. Amongst their peer groups, there are reportedly a very large majority of young parents who hold the same sensible views and values. It could well be that wokeism is essentially an artefact of the internet, spurred on by the media giants' deeply misguided identification with those extremists who shout the loudest. Much as in the 90s/early 2000s, when retailers pandered to the 'pink pound'. Normality will prevail!

I watch a huge range of reputable news online and many excellent documentaries, professionally made by people like Peter Whittle who have abandoned the mendacious pulpits of the MSM.

My take on what he's doing is that he's bigging up what's good about the UK as if it's a magic salve, he'll take that home, write books about how he can save the US with rediscovered wisdom from the old country - and thus relaunch his career. Two months is no time at all in sociological/anthropological research terms. But just about enough time to gather some fairy dust....

In many cities these days, most people know not to tangle with the police and other authorities. Especially when it's obvious to all that these authorities are completely onside with the wokeist iconoclasts. This has to be a serious consideration in places like Colston's city.

The BBC has been at this stuff for many years now. They outed themselves with their egregious Brexit biases, since then they've gone all out to be woker than woke. Who in their right mind would pay licence fees for that?

  19. Powell was a prodigious intellect and eminent scholar. He saw the future with great accuracy from his studies of history and his experience as a military officer during WW2. That speech was grossly misunderstood by the usual type of almost hysterical parliamentary donkeys. He was certainly not a 'hate speaker' nor did he have any intention to incite the mob. He was, in the words of my mother, who worked for him in his early political days, " a scholar and a gentleman". We just can't allow the historical reality to be so distorted by otherwise intelligent young men who've ingested 5th hand snippets of biased criticism.

  20. For me, hearing all those names and references and concepts was an unalloyed joy. It all directly connects John to me and many others of us who deeply lament the devastation that wokeism is wreaking. When John was born I was just beginning to read philosophy and art history at Uni. We live in an increasingly philistine world where people are encouraged to be frightened of the old masters and mistresses, and utterly irrationally angry at them. It's delightful and so reassuring to hear a younger person's knowledge and passion about the sine qua non of our Western past. Huge credit also to John's mum for her highly intelligent parenting and her loving support; she opened all these doors for him and kept them open. As a lone parent, this will not have been without sacrifices.

  21. I'd go there as well, if I could. Their family-friendly policies are excellent. The UK would not have had to tacitly import very costly, illicit 'labour-units' if our duplicitous politicians had introduced the same in the 1980s-90s.

  22. I'm on exactly the same page as you, Lady P. As a parent, former educator, school and college governor, I can sadly say that education has been and still is, in many ways, abusive. Try as we did to counter it, there was a quiet but Herculean agenda to inflict these ideological horrors. We - the 'Joe Bloggses of Hartlepool', as Anne puts it, didn't and still don't want any of this.

  26.  @TheRogey1  Thoroughly agree with you, Roger. I'd venture further: the CofE has most likely done more to undermine Christianity in the UK than even rabid secularists. Always bending and bowing to popularist trends and fads and keeping in with the powerful, thus reducing timeless Christian teachings to obstructive diktats that must be massaged, overcome, ignored etc. But, of course, the Anglican church in the UK is simply following the example of its founders. It seems to me that people don't look for these shifting values in a religion, they look for timeless, transcendent virtues...things that are sacred, immutable, dependable. The wise man builds his house upon the rock...!

  28. It seems to me that Mr Clarkson is perhaps out of touch with what's actually going on out here. I don't watch any television or Netflix etc so I had to make a mental leap to realise that he was writing about a tv show. He didn't even know his own daughter's views. Plus, his piece was badly written. It was perfectly easy enough to write that piece in a way that would connect Ms Markle with Cersei's just desserts without being so vulgar.

Jacob and Peter's experiences as carers resonates with atheist, socialist Sartre's "There is no love but the deeds of love.", written following his experience of agonising whether to care for his ailing mother or to go off heroically to the Spanish civil war. He chose to take care of his mum. Which opened a whole new vista of edifying thought for us all. (Of course, we Brits were there first, "Love is as love does", which ultimately follows Biblical teaching such as 1 Corinthians 13.1.)

It would be wonderful if we were allowed to remember that and thus face the future with confidence in those accomplishments , enlightened by our learning from our missteps, rather than feeling degraded and guilty. It would also be great to share the knowledge and confidence in those accomplishments with new Britons too. There's much unity in shared appreciation....

I've seen it as a parent, done my best to counter it. But they've created a huge swathe of people who are adult size with childlike needs for parental authority and support.

That culture is not Biblical - nowhere did Jesus say, 'thou shalt not confront nor condemn a suspected or actual wrongdoer'. Indeed, Matthew Ch18: 15-17 is precise about what one is to do. Maybe Miss Widdecombe did this and involved the proper authorities. We just don't know. Meanwhile, this Christian culture of silence has caused phenomenal harm to many. I abhor and condemn it.

The Global Slavery Index has all the details. In 2016 there were 40.3 million enslaved people in the world. It's horrendous, despicable.
