  10. What always amazes me in your videos and those of other YouTube posters of Detroit is how one block can radically differ from another... One that is well kept, while the next one is totally abandoned with rotting houses... I'm also amazed when I see well kept houses with rotting houses next door to them... The sad thing is that these rotted houses were once beautiful, solid homes...

  17. I live near Baltimore City and have driven through it and I was trying to guess what streets you were driving on... But, so many look alike... Those boarded up houses are fire and collapse death traps... And in some cases, they are nothing but facades hiding collapsed interiors and roofs... Yet, there are houses that are well kept even when totally surrounded by decrepit, rotted, derelict hulks...And the City owns a great amount of the 30,000+ rotted, decrepit, derelict, hulks...

I looked up the history of McKeesport and it was originally settled in 1755 and was named after John McKee who settled it and 1795, it was named "McKeesport" because his son ran a ferrying business there and the place was known as "McKee's Port"... Bituminous coal was discovered and from 1832 on, the town grew into a city... As for the old houses, moat of them were built in the late 1800's and into the early to mid 1900's as industry flourished... There are plenty of houses of the same era all throughout the region... Once the mills started shutting down, McKeesport, Pittsburgh, Aliquippa, Ambridge, etc. crashed... And like many in Detroit, Gary, Flint, Pontiac, etc., those who couldn't leave just have to "make do"... And, the "real estate bubble" and "drug pandemic" didn't help either ! I was born and raised in Pittsburgh and lived through it all until my job situation prompted me and my wife to move to Maryland for better job opportunities...

  26. As I watched the video, I was surprised by the lack of trash and litter, how well kept the houses and lawns were... I did see the graffiti and the abandoned building in a commercial area... Even there, there was no trash or litter... The high rise apartment buildings were well kept as well... Charlie titled the video as "Toronto's most dangerous neighborhoods"... Maybe some of the streets that Charlie didn't drive down are worse... And the danger comes at night... My wife and I honeymooned in Toronto 41 years ago and were surprised by its cleanliness then... We stayed at the Inn on the Park hotel....

  29. Where to begin ? Detroit had been losing population since the early 60's ANF then the riots happened in 1965 and 68 and people started leaving in earnest... And those houses were multifamily houses as well as being single family and as the exodus continued the houses went vacant and started to decay... Add to that, elderly owners being placed in nursing homes, or dying, and leaving no heirs or the heirs not wanting the houses... Fast forward to the collapse if the auto industry...cocaine epidemic... and the the overheated mortgage market that ruined homeowners... That's how some of this happened...

  42. My wife and I honeymooned in Toronto 42 years ago and revisited it on our 25th. Anniversary...We stayed at the 4 Seasons Inn on the Park both times... We loved the city back then and it is saddening to see it decay... But, that's the way things are going...

  47. I was born and raised in Pittsburgh and moved to Maryland in 1986... Thanks for the ride ! Pittsburghers always took pride in their houses and their neighborhoods, hence the lack of the destruction, garbage, and litter... Yes, I did see some of the trashy vacant lots and boarded up houses that looked like they were kept up... Even though the neighborhoods change, some things stay the same culturally ( taking care of your house and yard, etc. )...
