Another cheerful ride with Charlie ππ
20
There was a TV series titled "After Man"...welcome to the real life version...
20
And yet, the residents keep on electing and re-electing them... Maryland is the same, given that it's 2:1 Democrats and people vote mindlessly for those who tax them being heavily... "Oh, but it's for the children... We need 'World Class Schools' that turn out illiterate and ignorant students, etc. "
20
A little "Baltimore City trivia" for the out of town viewers... If you look closely at some of the row homes ( including the boarded up ones ), you'll notice that the front steps of some of them are lighter in color than others... They are marble steps and more expensive than concrete and were a status symbol in the neighborhood 100 years ago... Every day, the owners would scrub them to keep them clean, part of taking pride in one's home and " 'hood "...
18
Happy Birthday, Charlie ! This "Mac Arthur Park" looks nothing like the one described in the Jimmy Webb song...ππ
18
There's no difference between them, except location...
18
They aren't really poor... They live a simple existence that rejects most of what we "English" ( their term for the non-Amish ) have in our lives... They practice something called "gelassenheit" ( sp? )( submission to God )which causes them to be content with their lives and they are peaceful because of it. Their religious faith is very strong and that keeps things in check although there are some Amish youth who get tempted into doing and selling drugs and other small crimes... Also, being "shunned" is the equivalent of being dead to one's family and community and no one wants to suffer that... And this has been going on for generations since the 1500's & 1600's...
17
This is what happens when the only major employer cuts back, downsizes, or shuts down and the other smaller "mom and pop" businesses that supported that major employer close and people leave for other places... Name the city...Detroit, Baltimore, Dayton, Steubenville, etc. The same things happened... Add to that political mismanagement and malfeasance...
17
That fire episode should have been longer... It was pretty spectacular !
17
It is one of the poorest, if not the poorest, municipalities in the US...
17
Actually, there are familes who have lived here for generations and the houses were passed down as well as the concepts of keeping up one's house and property... That being said, there are parts of Pittsburgh that rival the worst of Detroit or any other "hoods" that Charlie has driven through...
17
When I saw "The Last Day of Summer" in the title, I thought of Don Henley's "Boys of Summer"... The song was somehow appropriate for the empty and nearly empty neighborhoods...
17
MachineGunAssassin60, The owners are trapped by the fact that their houses are nearly worthless and without money from the sale of the house to reduce the cost of the next house... So, all one can do is maintain a semblance of normalcy and sanity in the face of abnormality, insanity, and evil... I'm willing to bet you that when these abandoned houses were occupied... They looked pretty well kept...
16
Very nicely done, Charlie, very nicely done ! πππ
16
Gotta love the spacious, open floor plan of the one house that Charlie and Yung Cee passed on the way to the mural at 6:01... ππππ And I agree that it "has seen better days", Charlie !
16
In all of your videos, how do you know what streets to pick out and drive down and how do you not get lost in the cities that you visit ?
16
Regarding the vacant houses with over grown lots... This is the TV series :"After Man" in real life...
16
What a nice,peaceful, drive through a very nice neighborhood π π
15
The song and dance were entertaining π
15
Considering some of your most recent visits of other "hoods" in other cities... This isn't all that bad... I noticed that the streets and the rest of the "hood" were really clean, despite the trashy, overgrown, vacant, abandoned houses and lots... They will always be a trash dump...
15
You can add "elderly owners dying and none of their heirs wanting the property" to the list and the government coming to own the houses via non-payment of property taxes and banks and mortgage companies owning them via foreclosure... Then, there was the "cocaine epidemic" ...
14
Charlie, Since you always stop at a convenience store in your videos... Why not put together a tour of stores as a film subject ?
14
I am always amazed at how far the yelling and the music seem to go... Both seem to travel for blocks...
14
My wife and I honeymooned there 36 years ago in November. We stayed at The Four Seasons Inn on the Park and visited the CN tower, Eaton Centre, visited the "artists colony" and ate at "Mad" Ed Mirvish's restaurant and drove out to the underwater park ( it was closed for the season ) at the end of the peninsula on Lake Huron on one of our "explorations" of Ontario... We left quickly when the sky turned very dark... It was "fun" explaining why we had two different last names, but our marriage license settled things... We still have the souvenirs and went back for our 20th. and 25th. Anniversaries... We greatly enjoyed our visits !
13
As of 04/25/2022... Baltimore City has had 104 homicides since 01/01/2022... π§π π‘
13
Zero Hedge, If Charlie is using a cell phone to record his videos, he may not be able to adjust the volume as he films... You are correct about the noisy people... I don't know why they are loud even when they are not drunk or high... When I saw the "Penn" sign, I recognized the 'hood... Penn North... It isn't any better in the day...
13
The music from the ice cream truck sounded distorted and sad...
13
And thar's one of many reasons why it's called : " Filthydelphia "... A live-in landfill...
13
They are abandoned, but that doesn't stop people taking shelter or "squatting"...
13
Β @AuroraBoarder1Β The bullet hit the roof of his truck...it was from a gun being fired into the air to celebrate New Year's... Charlie and everyone who watched the video were surprised by hearing it hit... There was no damage...
13
These houses are beyond rehabilitation because the copper wiring and pipes are gone and the weather has taken its toll as well... Demolition is the only option... Then, there's the neighborhood environment... Imagine seeing this everyday... Sadly, these were decent houses in past years...
12
Like living in a ghost town with ghosts... And haunting memories of neighbors long gone...
12
Isn't it interesting that the further away from the "big citiesβ" with their "urban, 'gangsta', diverse, cultureβ"... The nicer the neighborhoods ? And the residents are probably better behaved... BTW, Baltimore City had 6 homicides between 8:45p Monday to 4:30a Tuesday morning...
12
That started out as a memorial to someone who had gotten killed there and then took on a "life of its own"... To make things worse, many of the bottles are still full of their original liquor !
12
There have been 20 homicides in the first 24 days of January, 2019 in a city with very strict gun laws ( for law-abiding, legal, gun owners... that is... ) ... Yay, Baltimore ! < sarcasm I live outside of Baltimore and religiously avoid going there outside of seeing my GP ( General Practitioner )...
12
She could be just feeling cold and trying to get warm...
12
Welcome to Baltitoilet, the charmless "Charm City"...
12
My wife and I were stopped at a light on a street in Baltimore, Maryland and we saw someone dancing on the street corner and he wasn't wearing ear plugs or headphones... He was dancing to music that only he could hear...
12
Kyle Niquette, The people who live in the areas with the burned out buildings are trapped there since their houses are worth almost nothing and no one wants to live there... A couple of decades ago, the areas probably looked far better... But, this has been going on since the '60's... Especially after the riots that seized Detroit and other cities and people left the city...
11
Happy New Year, Charlie ! πππ
11
Before this video started, there was a recruiting ad for Door Dash... I found it ironically, and darkly, funny...π I wonder what the "lifespan" of a Door Dash, Grubhub, etc., delivery driver is ? π€ π
11
Yes, it was a plan to get people to move into this horror... And you had a certain period of time to get a "house" back up to city code and habitable and back on the property tax rolls... Or the city would repossess it... Frankly, I wouldn't pay a penny for the lot of them ! A nice application of napalm would do wonders...
11
There are 4 legged and 2 legged ones... While the streets that Charlie is driving down are relatively clean... If he were to go down the totally abandoned blocks and the alleys behind them, there would be rats aplenty, but they mostly come out at night... Former Mayor, Catherine Pugh, said that she smelt them...
11
It's still as depressing... With or without snow... I was thinking about it being the setting for a horror story, or novel, where all of the empty houses are the dwelling places of HP Lovecraft type monsters... And woe to the terminally curious ! ππ
11
That's why it's called: "Filthydelphia"... π Also... Do you know what the difference between a trash can and Philadelphia is ? Me neither... < sarcasm π
11
MLK Blvd. is panhandling heaven, especially starting at Mulberry Street... If you exclude the boarded up houses in the first segment, the houses you filmed, including the ones following your convenience store stop, looked good, showing "pride of ownership", whether owned or rented... If you're looking for "fun and frivolity", that begins after night fall... π
11
I agree ! Also, stop smoking weed, drinking, and any other drug use... And be sober and intelligent, and work hard to have a middle class life...
11
seven30 blackbag, The soil in that part of South Carolina is largely made up of sand, clay, etc. Thus, the sand being seen... I live in Maryland near Baltimore and the soil is the same clay/sand mix and once you cross the Chesapeake Bay on to the Eastern Shore, it is mostly sand...
11
I remember seeing a report about these homes... Some were not "built to code" and were pretty shoddy in construction and were unlivable... And once abandoned...
10
And it doesn't look any better in the sunshine or snow...
